From Evil Sect Leader to Doctor

Chapter 72: Before Departure

Xu Chunliang only informed Cheng Xiaohong about his trip for external training.

Upon hearing this, Cheng Xiaohong's first reaction was to wonder what would happen to the medical affairs office in his absence.

Xu Chunliang assured Cheng Xiaohong that the earth keeps turning regardless of who's around. In the past, when it was just the two of them in the office, work proceeded smoothly. Now, with two more senior employees, it shouldn't pose much of a problem.

Although their time together wasn't long, Cheng Xiaohong had already seen through the two newcomers; either one as a director would just be a figurehead.

Cheng Xiaohong also felt that Xu Chunliang's reason for leaving was due to inner dissatisfaction, but the more this was the case, the less he should leave. Since there's no official decision from the organisational department yet, there's still a possibility. Xu Chunliang hadn't missed his chance to become director, as the dean had publicly stated that he would be responsible for the medical affairs office's work, and Zhao Feiyang's words at Changxing held the weight of an imperial edict; quitting would mean giving competitors a chance.

After much thought, Cheng Xiaohong gave Xu Chunliang a suggestion: "Xiaoxu, I think you shouldn't give up. You actually have a chance." Since Huang Lide and others arrived, Cheng Xiaohong reverted to her original way of addressing Xu Chunliang.

Xu Chunliang laughed: "Give up what? I'm going for the training to improve myself." His real reason for participating in the training was to visit Bai Mushan and uncover the truth about the batch of oracle bones that his grandfather donated years ago.

Whether it was Yan Huaiyi or Cheng Xiaohong, they all thought he was having a mood over work-related issues, underestimating his breadth of mind. The position of director at Changxing Hospital's medical affairs office wasn't something he even cared about.

Of course, Cheng Xiaohong's concerns weren't baseless; the reason why the medical affairs office was running smoothly during this period wasn't due to Zhou Wenbin's leadership, but because of Xu Chunliang, a daring and determined Tiger General.

Although the newcomer Yang Zhen Gang was known for his ruthlessness, he was fundamentally different from Xu Chunliang as he lacked Xu Chunliang's wisdom.

Truly, it is through comparison that one can truly know a person; comparing people can be fatal, goods can be discarded.

Xu Chunliang was going for a week-long training. The happiest person about this was Huang Lide, as a week's time could resolve many issues.

Before Xu Chunliang even left, Huang Lide was already feeling like the director of the medical affairs office, assigning Cheng Xiaohong to visit Zhao Xiaohui, who was hospitalized at the Women's and Children's Health Care Hospital.

Cheng Xiaohong inwardly didn't want to go. She argued that she was just an ordinary staff member, not of high enough status, and if she went like this, would people think Changxing Hospital wasn't taking the matter seriously?

Cheng Xiaohong meant for Huang Lide to accompany her, but Huang Lide didn't think so, believing it was more appropriate for women to visit such places.

In the end, it was Xu Chunliang who volunteered to accompany her. Both carrying nutritional supplements and flowers, they went to visit the well-known Jiangzhou host, Zhao Xiaohui.

Zhao Xiaohui had already undergone laparoscopic surgery four days ago and was recovering quite well. She was originally moving around the room and hurried to bed upon hearing someone from Changxing Hospital was visiting her.

She was staying in a VIP ward, and when Xu Chunliang and Cheng Xiaohong arrived, she had just gone out with someone to buy food.

Xu Chunliang placed the nutritional supplements down, and Cheng Xiaohong handed the flowers to Zhao Xiaohui, first introducing herself and not forgetting to flatter her by saying she was prettier than on TV.

Zhao Xiaohui had no intention of accepting the flowers, her expression serious, her clear eyes coldly watching them, making Cheng Xiaohong a bit awkward. She set the bouquet on the bedside table.

Zhao Xiaohui said, "Take it away; I don't need your hypocritical condolences."

Cheng Xiaohong replied, "We came sincerely to visit you."

"Sincere? Why didn't Yu Mo come? Shouldn't she apologize to me face to face for what happened?"

Cheng Xiaohong didn't know how to respond. The other was a host, sharp with words, and besides, they had every reason to be justified.

Xu Chunliang said, "Indeed, Director Yu's decisions led to your ectopic pregnancy's acute complications, and she should be responsible for it."

Zhao Xiaohui was stunned, feeling there was more to his words. Her ectopic pregnancy wasn't caused by Yu Mo; Yu Mo wouldn't have such capability even if she wanted to.

"What do you mean?"

"Don't overthink it; the most important thing now is to rest and recover. Rest assured, we will not evade our responsibilities."

Xu Chunliang's tone was different from Cheng Xiaohong's, as she was apologetic and even a little panicky, but Xu Chunliang showed no guilt when speaking. Though they were apologizing, his demeanor was confident, as if he'd done nothing wrong.

Zhao Xiaohui said, "Don't just talk; I've already stated my terms. What's your response?"

Xu Chunliang said, "Miss Zhao, you work in an institution, so you should know that for entities like ours, everything follows a process. Plus, you agreed to give us three days to resolve this matter. I assure you, in three days, we will provide a definite response."

After all, in three days, he'd be in Nanjiang, and whatever happened here would be unrelated to him.

Zhao Xiaohui nodded, "Take your things away. I don't need any of your condolences."

At this moment, Zhao Xiaohui's fiancé, Chen Jianxin, returned, holding the food he fetched for her and moving the flowers aside, placing the meal container on the bedside table, his expression somewhat cold.

Xu Chunliang observed Zhao Xiaohui's ectopic pregnancy's main culprit, wondering why she didn't go after the real perpetrator.

Zhao Xiaohui asked Chen Jianxin to escort them out, and Chen Jianxin gestured them towards the door.

Xu Chunliang and Cheng Xiaohong exchanged a glance. Having accomplished their task, there was no need to stay. As they stepped out, Chen Jianxin gently closed the door.

Xu Chunliang glanced back at the door and asked Cheng Xiaohong, "Did her fiancé go to the hospital for negotiations?"

Cheng Xiaohong shook her head, "Her two brothers came."

"Do you feel that Chen Jianxin wasn't too pleased?"

"Obviously, his girlfriend has an ectopic pregnancy; why would he be happy?"

Xu Chunliang wasn't focused on that. His fiancée had an ectopic pregnancy, and now they were directing their frustration at Changxing Hospital. Both he and Cheng Xiaohong were there to visit on the hospital's behalf. Typically, family members would react emotionally, but Chen Jianxin remained calm throughout and didn't treat them rudely. Perhaps this could be explained by personal composure, but Xu Chunliang noticed that between Chen Jianxin and Zhao Xiaohui, there was little eye contact; even rare exchanges lacked the sentiment expected between lovers.

Xu Chunliang's intuition told him there was trouble between this couple, and Chen Jianxin couldn't be bothered to even feign concern. Recalling Zhao Feiyang's words when they first met, he believed that to solve the problem, one must uncover the patient's background and weaknesses. Many times, handling medical disputes couldn't focus solely on medical issues.

The two went to consult Zhao Xiaohui's attending physician about her surgical and postoperative recovery status. Thinking that since they were all part of the medical system, there would be no undermining each other, however, upon learning their identity, the attending physician became wary and refused to share any information, directing them to the medical affairs office instead.

Upon learning that Xu Chunliang was leaving for a week-long training in Nanjiang, Xu Changshan couldn't help but feel a bit reluctant. But he understood that his grandson was grown and it was time to let go. Since starting work, Xu Chunliang had made great progress, showing he had the ability to navigate this complex society on his own.

Watching him grow every day, Xu Changshan felt both gratified and a bit lost, for Xu Chunliang's maturity meant his reliance on him was waning, making the old man feel obsolete.

Growth and aging are stages everyone must go through, a truth Xu Changshan had long understood, but when it happened to him, it still left him feeling very lost.

Seeing his grandfather's reluctance, Xu Chunliang smiled, "If you're worried, come with me to Nanjiang for a few days."

"You have serious work to do; why would I go? Besides, if I leave, what will happen to Huichun Hall?"

Strangely enough, ever since the Pretty Beauty Breast Enhancement opened next door, Huichun Hall's business had steadily declined. Another might have felt anxious about the drop in income, but Xu Changshan felt relieved, as his age and declining energy meant he couldn't handle the workload he once did. Now, he was content with his leisure, with his only hope being that his grandson could soon master his studies and take over Huichun Hall, carrying on the family's medical traditions, fulfilling his duty to the Xu ancestors.

Seeing Xu Chunliang confidently maneuver through society, Elder Xu's heart was finally at peace, knowing that even without him or Huichun Hall, he could live independently.

Before leaving, Xu Chunliang asked his grandfather to write a letter to Bai Mushan, as showing up unannounced would be too abrupt.
