I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chapter 65: We Agreed to Struggle Together Yet You Quietly Rose to the Top (2/3)

"I was just wondering why I heard your voice and thought I misheard it, turns out it really is you."

Ji Xiuwen chuckled wryly, "And how did you become the head of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department?"

Lu Xuan explained, "When I got here, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department was practically at a standstill, with just me as the Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, so the director made me the head of the department."

"Then what's up with so many people registering?"

"Are there other doctors in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department besides you?"

This was what Ji Xiuwen was most curious and puzzled about. Otherwise, based on what he knew of Lu Xuan, prescribing something like the Four-Ingredient Soup was fine, but he wouldn't dare try anything else.

As he spoke, his eyes instinctively fell on the timid-looking girl sitting at the computer.

Seeing him look at Su Kenan, Lu Xuan shook his head and said, "She's a student from Zhijiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. She just passed the entrance exam for Zhijiang's Traditional Chinese Medicine graduate program this year and came for an internship during the summer. She'll be leaving in less than two months."

"An undergrad from Zhijiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine?"

Ji Xiuwen was momentarily stunned, then a memory seemed to fully activate in his mind, surprising him. "Whoa, I know who she is. Su Kenan, the goddess in the hearts of all the male students at Zhijiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the true 'white moonlight.' I heard she doesn't have a boyfriend and doesn't really talk to any guys, and, apparently, her family is quite wealthy.

The most crucial thing is, I heard the director takes good care of her, suggesting an unusual family background.

But I'm puzzled, with such a strong background, why come to a Health Center for an internship? Shouldn't she be interning at the Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine?"

As he said this, Ji Xiuwen tried to keep his voice as low as possible.

Lu Xuan looked at him with a gaze suggesting he was seeing him for the first time, "How do you know so much?"

"Ha, you think everyone is like you, buried in medical books all day at school?"

Ji Xiuwen retorted, "Don't be fooled by me spending all day in the library with you. I keep up with some of the news at school. She's quite famous there, the most beautiful 'white moonlight.' You think I'm joking with you, but the line of people chasing her stretches from the library to the school gate, and yet no one's succeeded, still unsure which lucky bastard will win her over."

He looked at Lu Xuan deliberately, gritting his teeth resentfully.

Lu Xuan felt he was being insulted, but after thinking about it, he realized he had nothing to do with Su Kenan, so why take it to heart?

Ji Xiuwen didn't dwell on it and asked again, "So there are other doctors?"

"Nope, just me." Lu Xuan spread his hands.

"Damn!"

"Bro, don't scare me."

Ji Xiuwen's expression changed completely.

"I don't have heart disease, but don't scare me into having one."

Leaving the County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was easy, but getting back would be tough.

Don't underestimate a position that just involves dispensing medicine; it's a role many people compete for.

With so many graduates every year, his position isn't indispensable.

Ji Xiuwen even thought his spot, which was barely vacated last Friday, might already be taken by someone else.

Coming to the Health Center without any progress would mean a big loss for him.

He looked at Lu Xuan, almost in tears.

Lu Xuan spread his hands again, "It's just me. Starting today, you're my assistant."

Ji Xiuwen looked bitter. Me, an assistant to my desk mate?

Kidding, right?

He wanted to say a few words but held back when he saw Wang Youqing present.

That's when Wang Youqing found a moment to cut in, "Lu, what's going on exactly?"

Lu Xuan explained, half crying, half laughing, "Ji Xiuwen and I are classmates from Zhijiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and also roommates. When he mentioned transferring, I thought he went to the District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital. Who knew he came here instead?"

"If you told me you were at the Qiu City Street Health Center, I..." Ji Xiuwen was at a loss for words.

"I wanted to tell you last time, but you hung up because something urgent came up. Later, I considered inviting you to work here with me, but then I thought you went to the District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which has a better future than the Health Center. How could I ask you to come here, and would you even come?"

Lu Xuan replied frustrated, "Who knew you'd show up here on your own?"

"You guys are too complicated." Wang Youqing was almost dizzy from all this talk. Glancing at the time, he said, "Alright, since you know each other, I won't introduce you any further."

He then patted Ji Xiuwen on the shoulder, "Ji, learn well from Lu. I'll head to the Lab Department now. There are many health check-ups today, lots of blood samples to take."

"Uncle, you go ahead. I'll take care of him." Lu Xuan said with a smile.

Wang Youqing didn't say more and left directly.

But Ji Xiuwen seemed a bit depressed.

After Wang Youqing left, Ji Xiuwen finally whispered, "Lu Xuan, no, bro, should we make a run for it?"

As he spoke, Ji Xiuwen glanced at the dense crowd of patients outside, feeling slightly panicked.

He didn't understand why so many patients came for Lu Xuan, but one thing was clear: if they didn't leave, and something went wrong, they'd have no chance to run later.

It wasn't that he didn't trust Lu Xuan, but because he knew him too well, which made him really worried and anxious.

Actually, what fascinated him most was how Lu Xuan managed to treat patients over the past half month without any incidents, and even become the 'brilliant physician' his mom spoke of.
