I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chapter 69: Godfather Teach Me (2/3)

Lu Xuan pushed his way through the crowd and saw Wang Youqing just hang up the phone, so he stepped forward and asked, "Uncle, what's going on?"

"When they were drawing blood just now, the child was probably a bit scared and wouldn't cooperate. Her mother scolded her a couple of times, and unexpectedly, she didn't hold her hand well, and the child fell off the blood drawing table. She probably hit the back of her head.

The child cried a couple of times and then fell into a coma. I've already called 120, and since the Ninth Hospital is relatively close, the ambulance should arrive in about ten minutes."

Wang Youqing had just been arranging work in the laboratory department and happened to see the child fall, so he explained the situation clearly.

Lu Xuan listened quietly, crouching down as he listened to check on the little girl's condition.

"Ma'am, how old is your child?"

The woman holding the child and crying heard this, instinctively raised her head to look at Lu Xuan, somewhat at a loss.

Meanwhile, someone who knew Lu Xuan quickly reminded her, "This is Dr. Lu from the Traditional Chinese Medicine department, he's very skilled. You should tell him, maybe Dr. Lu has a solution."

Only then did the woman respond, quickly saying, "Two... two years old."

Lu Xuan nodded slightly, "Can I take a look at the child's condition?"

"Alright, alright..."

Although the woman didn't know Lu Xuan, seeing that so many people around recognized him and trusted him, she immediately agreed.

With the woman's consent, Lu Xuan parted the little girl's delicate hair to investigate.

Even though Wang Youqing mentioned it might be the back of the head, it still needed to be verified in person.

Searching the back of the head for a while and finding no injury, Lu Xuan had to change his approach, observing other areas, and finally found an abrasion on the top of the girl's head.

Yet, Lu Xuan did not stop. He felt around the area of the abrasion, confirmed the bones of the little girl's whole body, then pried her eyelids open to check, and only then withdrew his hands.

"Lu, how is it?"

"Uncle, get me a stethoscope first."

Although Wang Youqing didn't know what Lu Xuan intended to do, he couldn't ask too many questions at this moment and fetched a stethoscope from the laboratory department, handing it to Lu Xuan.

Holding the stethoscope, Lu Xuan listened to the girl's heart and lung function before handing the stethoscope back to Wang Youqing.

At this moment, Ji Xiuwen, standing behind Lu Xuan, couldn't help but ask after seeing Lu Xuan busy for a while and then returning the stethoscope to Uncle, "Lu Xuan, is there any way?"

Recognizing Ji Xiuwen's voice, Lu Xuan didn't turn around, "The patient is in a comatose state, unresponsive when called, pupils equal and round, clear breath sounds in both lungs. The heart rhythm is regular, with a heart rate of about 100 beats per minute, no pathological noises, a soft abdomen, a mild scalp abrasion on the top of the head, but no skull or whole-body fractures. It should be a concussion coma."

Ji Xiuwen had heard of concussion comas before.

Generally, a concussion coma doesn't last more than half an hour, and the person should wake up on their own.

However, if it lasts longer than half an hour, other issues must be considered, and at that point, the waking time can't be estimated. Clinically, concussions are extremely common and are one of the milder types of cranial injuries, often showing normal results upon neurological examination. They usually result from violent impacts, car accidents, or falls from heights, most commonly causing temporary consciousness disturbances immediately after injury.

After a concussion, most patients display noticeable consciousness disturbances, typically lasting from a few minutes to several minutes but usually not exceeding half an hour.

If a patient's coma lasts more than half an hour, it typically indicates potential concurrent organic cranial injury diseases like acute traumatic subdural hematoma, cerebral contusion and laceration, diffuse axonal injury, etc.

Not all concussion patients fall into a coma; some may only show cloudy consciousness and mental vagueness.

When most patients remain conscious, they typically can't accurately recall the event of the injury, a phenomenon clinically termed retrograde amnesia.

Also, when patients wake or regain consciousness, they often experience significant headaches, dizziness, nausea, dry heaving, or even cold extremities and increased heart rate. During recovery, they might face memory decline, insomnia, and vivid dreams at night as symptoms.

Seeing Lu Xuan conducting various examinations on the little girl, summing up the situation clearly in a few words, Wang Youqing was momentarily at a loss for words.

A concussion coma, especially in such a young child, the best approach is to wait for the ambulance to come and transport the patient to the hospital for a brain CT scan to confirm there are no problems before determining an emergency plan.

It's not that there's a lack of trust in Lu Xuan's medical skills, just that in some cases, human judgment inevitably falls short compared to modern medical equipment.

Moreover, if something does go wrong, no one can bear that responsibility.

Ultimately, it might come back to bite them.

A medical incident at a health center is much more severe than at large hospitals.

If it were an urgent situation, there'd be no choice since saving a life is the priority.

But now, beyond being comatose, the child doesn't exhibit other symptoms, and the ambulance from the Ninth Hospital isn't far, just a ten-minute matter, so waiting isn't unreasonable.

However, seeing Lu Xuan's earnest demeanor, he swallowed the words he wanted to say.

Once he says it, whether Lu Xuan will reconsider the idea of immediate aid is uncertain, but the girl's mother would definitely be upset.
