I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chapter 95: Zhou Hangyong's Frustration

However, upon hearing that someone was sent here for emergency treatment due to a stroke last night, Lu Xuan's expression turned a bit peculiar.

Could it be that online car service driver from last night?

The place where he lives is quite close to the Ninth Hospital. If the emergency center really assigns a task, it's quite likely the person would be sent to the Ninth Hospital.

But it's not certain either, as the neurology department of the Ninth Hospital is overcrowded; sending to another hospital is also possible.

It's not necessarily that online car service driver.

Lu Xuan was about to ask, but he found out that the three of them had already arrived at the entrance of the intensive care unit and had to desist.

Maybe we'll find out soon.

The three entered the ward.

"Dr. Ye."

"Dr. Lu."

The son of the patient, Gui Rongrun, stood up to greet Lu Xuan and Ye Xiang as they came in. Especially when he saw Lu Xuan, his smile grew even wider.

Since Dr. Lu gave acupuncture to his father last night, Gui Rongrun's condition has improved significantly.

Seeing his father gradually getting better, as a son, he was naturally delighted.

Dr. Lu has come again today; maybe after a few more needles, his father might recover completely.

Of course, the possibility of complete recovery is slim.

Nonetheless, he still held some hope.

The sooner the recovery, the sooner the discharge, otherwise, staying in the hospital is a considerable daily expense. As for Dr. Lu's consultation fee, compared to the high hospitalization costs, it really doesn't amount to much.

Moreover, acupuncture has almost no side effects compared to Western medicine, which also gives him peace of mind.

Lu Xuan nodded towards him.

Upon entering the ward, Ye Xiang began introducing the condition of the patient Gui Rongrun to Lu Xuan: "After the acupuncture treatment last night, the patient has become more lucid, dizziness has lessened, but according to his son, the bowel movements remain rather dry, and the blood pressure has dropped from 140/110 yesterday to 135/108 mmHg.

The right upper and lower limbs can move slightly, but the range is very limited."

After listening to Ye Xiang's introduction, Lu Xuan went up to check Gui Rongrun's pulse and observed his condition.

The tongue is red, with a thin greasy coating, and a frequent pulse.

After making a judgment, Lu Xuan looked at Ye Xiang and said, "Liver Yang hyperactivity, wind and phlegm disturb upwards, obscuring the clear orifices. The treatment principle is to calm the liver and subdue wind, dispel phlegm and clear the orifices, awaken the mind."

This remark was directed not only at Ye Xiang but also at Ji Xiuwen who was standing behind him.

"First, puncture the point Renzhong using the draining method of acupuncture, then use the three-edged needle to bleed at the twelve Well points. Subsequently, puncture Baihui, Laogong, and Taichong, also using the draining method, with needles retained for 30 minutes and manipulated every 5 minutes to obtain Qi."

Ji Xiuwen obviously knew that Lu Xuan was speaking to him, as besides Lu Xuan, he was the only one in the ward learning traditional Chinese medicine, so he committed these to memory.

However, just these instructions were not enough to understand the essence of acupuncture for stroke.

But Ji Xiuwen didn't ask and instead observed Lu Xuan's technique of obtaining Qi during needling closely.

The pathology is important, but so is the needling technique.

If the technique is incorrect, even if the acupoint is right, it's useless; it won't be effective.

As the acupuncture needle penetrated the acupoint, Lu Xuan seized the opportunity to impart knowledge to Ji Xiuwen: "Stroke falls into the syndrome of deficiency at root with excess in manifestations. At root, there's deficiency of liver and kidney, with insufficient Qi and blood; at manifestations, there's stirring of wind and fire, excess of phlegm-dampness, and stagnation of Qi and blood. But due to the depth of the affected site and the severity of the condition, with different urgency of deficiency and excess at root and manifestations, clinically, strokes are often divided into two categories: those affecting the meridians and those affecting the viscera."

"Those affecting the meridians: the site is superficial, the condition is mild, generally without change in mental status, only manifesting as crooked mouth, impaired speech, and hemiplegia.

"Those affecting the viscera: the site is deeper, the condition is severe, mainly manifesting as confusion, and paralysis, often with precursors and residual symptoms appearing."

"If it's a meridian stroke, how to treat with acupuncture?" Ji Xiuwen thought and asked.

Lu Xuan explained: "For hemiplegia due to meridian stroke, the primary focus is on promoting Qi and blood circulation and harmonizing the meridians. For the upper limb, select Jianyu, Quchi, Hegu, and Waiguan.

For the lower limb, choose Biguan, Liangqiu, Zusanli, Jiexi, Huantiao, Yanglingquan, and Shenshu.

According to some of the patient's symptoms, adjustments can be made. If there's liver and kidney Yin deficiency and liver Yang rising, add Taichong, Taixi, Taiyang, and if there's deficiency of the collateral vessels and invasion of wind evil, add Fengchi, Dazhui, and Hegu.

For the needling, use the draining method for the affected side, draining method for spastic cases, and reinforcing method for flaccid ones."

"What's the effect of using needles in this way?"

Ji Xiuwen asked with a frown.

Ye Xiang watched the two with interest.

Lu Xuan smiled slightly: "Wind diseases mostly affect the Yang meridians, Yangming being the palace of abundant Qi and blood, hence take points from the Yangming meridian to treat.

Depending on the different routes of meridian circulation, select points from the hand and foot Yangming meridians, which have the function of promoting Qi and blood circulation and harmonizing the meridians. Mainly reinforce the Yangming meridian points so that the Yangming Qi and blood are sufficient, nourishing the tendons and vessels.

If you add Taichong and Taixi to nourish Yin and subdue Yang, calm wind and clear heat, while adding Fengchi, Dazhui, and Hegu to dispel wind and release evil."

"I kind of understand, but there are still many doubts. I'll think about it slowly and ask you if I don't understand."

"Sure."

Lu Xuan stated with a smile, "Then I'll tell you about other conditions."

"For patients with crooked mouth corners, focus on promoting Qi and blood circulation, and harmonizing the meridians. Points to select are Dicang, Jiache, Hegu, Qianzhen, Neiting, Taichong... hand and foot Yangming and Jueyin meridians all ascend to the head and face, selecting Dicang, Jiache, and Qianzhen for close proximity to adjust local meridian Qi, selecting Hegu, Neiting, and Taichong for distant selection to adjust Yangming and Jueyin meridian Qi, cooperating to promote Qi and blood circulation, harmonize meridian points and adjust local meridian Qi."
