I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chapter 47: Caused by Deficiency Menstrual Disorder_3

Lu Xuan shook his head, not offering any consolation, but rather thought for a moment and said, "For those with menstrual disorders, there are generally three causes."

"The first is qi stagnation and emotional distress, with disharmony in kidney qi, liver qi stagnation. The Chong meridian and the major vascular network of the Shaoyin both originate from the kidneys. The Chong and Ren meridians converge in the womb, liver qi stagnates, kidney qi weakens, emotions become irritable, and consequently, menstruation becomes irregular.

The second cause is the accumulation of cold and wind chill. Cold invades the uterus, obstructing the true Yang. Insufficient Yang Qi generates cold, and when both qi and blood are cold, the uterus contracts. Cold qi leads to blood stasis, causing menstruation to be delayed and appearing as black clots, with a feeling of sinking pain in the lower abdomen. Such patients are generally sensitive to cold, with a pale complexion."

Hearing this, Wang Yuanfeng couldn't help but glance at her daughter.

Not just her, Su Kenan also instinctively looked at the girl.

Both obviously noticed the term "pale complexion" mentioned by Lu Xuan and instinctively assumed the girl's condition fell into the second category.

Observing their glances, Lu Xuan was not at all surprised.

In fact, not only Su Kenan and Wang Yuanfeng but also anyone else would likely think the same after hearing this explanation.

This is why many responsible doctors now advise patients not to haphazardly search online.

Most of the conditions mentioned online are exceptions and not absolute.

Many doctors, in responding to a particular symptom, instinctively reference a patient they have treated. However, those searching online for this information often do not judge these, instead instinctively matching their symptoms with those mentioned online. Sometimes, not searching is better, as searching could lead them to believe they have a "terminal illness."

For instance, reflux esophagitis, which is not typically severe, can usually be treated with a few doses of medicine. Yet, if you look it up online, most times you might think it's esophageal cancer, leading to perpetual gloom, turning a minor illness into a major one.

This situation is unfortunately quite common.

Lu Xuan shook his head and said, "For those studying medicine, it is most inadvisable to judge a condition based on a single symptom."

Su Kenan blinked and quietly answered, "Yes, I've noted it."

Seeing this, Lu Xuan nodded slightly and looked at Wang Yuanfeng, "It's the same for ordinary people. Don't rush to search online whenever something feels wrong in your body, and never align your symptoms strictly with those online. Sometimes, there might be nothing wrong originally, but you end up scaring yourself into a serious illness, or worse, scaring yourself to death."

Wang Yuanfeng gave an awkward smile but quickly nodded seriously, "Thank you, Dr. Lu."

Seeing the two, Lu Xuan smiled gently, "Her condition is not due to cold and wind chill but falls under the third category, resulting from deficiency. Hence I said what you mentioned was correct, yet not completely."

Su Kenan looked up at him, showing puzzlement, as it touched on her area of uncertainty.

Lu Xuan explained, "Caused by deficiency, where does the deficiency come from?"

Lu Xuan asked and answered himself, "In this comes the talk of how excessive thinking harms the spleen and excessive sexual activity harms the kidneys. The spleen governs thinking and orchestrates blood while also overseeing menstruation; the kidneys manage the uterus and store essence, enabling blood flow. If both spleen and kidney are damaged, menstrual cycles inevitably become irregular."

"Why?"

"Because menstruation pertains to water and yin blood."

"It is governed by the Chong and Ren meridians, which are part of Yin and Yang. It flows to the blood sea above as milk, and below as menstrual blood. If both spleen and stomach are deficient and can't nourish the Chong and Ren meridians, the blood sea turns empty, the uterus can't fill, and there's no blood to shed."

"The kidneys are in charge of storing essence, which forms the basis of life. Hence, it is stated in Suwen: 'The kidneys govern storage, the origin of sealing and storing, the abode of essence.' This means that kidneys generate, store, and regulate essence. If kidney essence is insufficient, menstrual cycles falter, but when kidney qi is abundant, the menstrual tide comes on time, showing a rhythm of fluctuation."

At that point, Lu Xuan paused for a moment before continuing, "Therefore, her menstrual disorder stems from deficiency in both the spleen and kidneys. Supplementing both spleen and kidney, benefiting qi, and preserving blood are key, rather than merely addressing qi and blood deficiency."

Su Kenan nodded, seemingly absorbed in thought.

On the other hand, Wang Yuanfeng couldn't help but ask, "Dr. Lu, I don't quite understand what you said. I just want to know why my daughter is like this?"

Lu Xuan instinctively glanced at the girl, noticing her evasive gaze. He had no choice but to remind, "The child is still young, studies aren't everything. Parents shouldn't exert too much pressure on the child.

Too much pressure leads to excessive thinking, which easily injures the spleen. Coupled with your daughter's frail body, it's no wonder her periods aren't regular."

Wang Yuanfeng: "..."

Wang Yuanfeng suddenly regretted pursuing the question so deeply, but she kept nodding at Lu Xuan's advice, "Dr. Lu, I understand. I'll definitely have a proper talk with her at home and not pressure her too much."

Lu Xuan didn't add more but instead lowered his head to write a prescription:

Baked Astragalus, Fried White Atractylodes, Charred Danggui, Fried White Peony, Longan Aril, Dodder Seed, Charred Rehmannia, Carbonized Dry Ginger, Schisandra, Codonopsis, Cornelian Cherry, Morinda, Chaihu, Cimicifuga, Dried Tangerine Peel, Fuling.

After writing, he looked up at Wang Yuanfeng and said, "After taking this for about two weeks, she should be fine. Again, don't impose too much pressure on her; otherwise, no amount of medicine will help."

Seeing Lu Xuan mention this again, Wang Yuanfeng gave a wry smile, "Dr. Lu, rest assured, this is my own child. How could I not care for her?"

"I'm not a stepmother, after all."

Wang Yuanfeng muttered softly, causing Lu Xuan to smile wryly himself.

"I'm just gently reminding you, that's all."
