Wasteland Border Inspector

Chapter 98: The Moon Remains and So Does the Road

When Cheng Ye left the medical facility in the afternoon, he had already completed the health formalities.

Actually, his injuries had fully healed two days prior, but to avoid drawing attention, he waited until the last day to depart.

The checkpoint also allocated accommodation for Wang Kang, and at Wang Kang's insistence, he received a place on the fourth floor of the same tube-shaped building at Chaoyang Electronics Factory where Cheng Ye lived.

It was the same room where they had previously taken down an infected body; now, one lived on the fifth floor and the other on the fourth, ensuring mutual support.

"Someone died here before, aren't you afraid?"

Upon entering, Cheng Ye pointed at the entrance and chuckled, "I even personally killed the infected body."

"Afraid of what?"

Wang Kang threw his backpack on the bed, casually glancing around the empty room, "Even if a corpse were lying next to me, I'd still sleep soundly."

This is the biggest difference between Wastelanders and modern people; in the end, Wang Kang is still a Wastelander.

The experiences of life and death have long been ingrained in them, leaving no room for fear of such things.

"Alright then, settle in for a while, and gradually furnish it over time."

Cheng Ye still felt somewhat apprehensive, so he had Long lead a team to clear out all the original furniture in the room and replaced it with brand new beds, tables, and chairs, even scraping off the mold stains in the corners.

"Thanks, Brother Cheng!"

Wang Kang paused, seemingly wanting to say more, but Cheng Ye simply patted his shoulder.

Everything was communicated without words.

"Get some rest early, we have to rise early tomorrow."

"Got it!"

Cheng Ye closed the door behind him, feeling inexplicably reassured.

Wang Kang gave him a feeling unlike any other; it was a pure, equal friendship.

This feeling was comfortable, and their time together eased their spirits.

Returning to the fifth floor, he opened the security door.

A moldy smell mixed with dust and dampness hit him, so Cheng Ye quickly opened all the doors and windows, also opening the corridor windows, letting the cross breeze air the place out for half an hour until the smell finally dissipated.

Compared to the clean and tidy room at the medical facility, the environment in this tube-shaped building was abysmal.

The plaster was peeling off the walls, the floors were uneven, and there were thin layers of mold in the corners.

Yet, not long after sitting in the room, Cheng Ye felt a sense of unprecedented relief.

There were no medical staff watching him, no Garcia next door, no influx of people probing him; just a small space of his own.

He bent down, lifting one corner of the wooden bed, and retrieved two long guns from underneath, carefully disassembling them.

Barrels, bolts, magazines... Each part was meticulously wiped with a cloth soaked in gun oil until they gleamed with a warm metallic luster, then reassembled.

He had to admit, holding such powerful weapons in his hands provided a sense of security.

Cheng Ye made a couple of mock aiming motions at the air, deciding to carry both guns with him during his next patrol.

In case he encountered another ultra-strong infected body like Rotting Vine, at least he'd have the means to strike back directly.

As for Wang Kang's side, there was no need to provide him with weapons beyond his current capabilities.

These were for heavy combat.

He taught Wang Kang to escape immediately if the situation took a turn, relying on the security forces to tangle with the infected, which was the operating procedure of most inspectors from the First and Second-Phase.

Moreover, he had already bought a Wild Bull Fighting Handgun for Wang Kang, which was sufficient for early-stage confrontations.

After handling the weapons, Cheng Ye grabbed a bucket and went to the water room to fetch water, intending to wipe off the sweat from his body.

As soon as he entered, he saw Huang Sheng wiping himself under the faucet. Hearing the noise, he turned around, his face showing surprise and delight, "Sir, you've returned?"

"Yes, just got back."

Cheng Ye started filling the bucket with water, glancing over at Huang Sheng, whose body was still marked with large bruises from tangling with an infected body on the walking street.

"Rest more, your body needs to be taken care of, don't wear yourself out."

"Don't worry, sir, I'm full of energy!"

Huang Sheng laughed heartily, his voice filled with vigor, "Thanks to you, I'm already up to level five permissions at the Public Works Bureau. I'm busy with the pioneering efforts in the South Suburb. A lot of newcomers are arriving soon, and the Industrial Zone people are also returning, so there's no room for slacking!"

As he spoke, his eyes fell on Cheng Ye in surprise, "Hey, Sir, your injuries..."

Cheng Ye took off his shirt, revealing his well-defined muscles. Under his healthy, tanned skin, each muscle was sharply contoured, not bulky but exuding sheer strength.

"Where did you think I was? I stayed at the medical facility for a week."

He picked up the bucket and poured it over his head.

The cold water trickled down his hair to his neck, resembling a shower but without the comfort, more like a brisk wash for a rugged man.

"Tomorrow, when the checkpoint opens, stay alert, in case any infected slip through..."

"Rest assured, sir, I understand!"

Huang Sheng immediately restrained his smile and nodded solemnly.

Cheng Ye acknowledged with a sound and said nothing more, leaving only the sound of running water in the room.

After the wash, he returned to his room, lying on the bed. Glancing at the Defense Communication, it was only nine o'clock, still early; he instinctively reached to the bedside for a book.

Only after groping twice did he realize there was no bedside table, and the room was empty, not even a thing to pass the time.

The books from the hospital room had been sent for lamination and would likely take two or three days to be returned.

This late at night, with no books to read and nothing else to do, Cheng Ye simply closed his eyes and prepared to sleep.
