My Weekly Refreshing Mentor Spirit

Chapter 45: Athena Stops Thinking

The gods are incredibly fickle; when they encounter beautiful things they can't help but want to possess them. If others resist or humiliate them, the gods will destroy those beautiful things and mete out thunderous punishment.

But often after the destruction, they feel regret and rush to the Netherworld to retrieve souls or the like.

Such stories abound in Ancient Greece, so Athena believed she could protect Xue Dili, as long as he was willing to become her follower.

With such thoughts in mind, Athena went to Xue Dili's residence.

This was an abandoned temple, originally dedicated to a minor god such as the deceased God of Narcissus. Since the god had died, the temple was abandoned and now served as Xue Dili's home.

Peering by the window, Athena saw Xue Dili tending to his wounds.

From his rapid breathing and clumsy fingers, Athena sensed an overwhelming guilt.

For the illness plaguing that mortal form was an amalgamation of the vilest diseases from all over Greece, handpicked by her. Even the God of Healing would be helpless, and only because of the layer of Inner Armor on his body did he not succumb to direct death.

Yet all this suffering concentrated on this child made her heart ache.

So, this was the time for her, the Goddess, to showcase her miracle.

Athena envisioned her entrance: transforming into a white owl, she would first warm him with her wings, then use divine power to ease his pain.

Finally, bestow upon him Divine Protection, allowing him to unreservedly wield this noble power. Watching the grace and visage of the Goddess, the Hero would timely kneel before her, kissing the back of her hand, right?

But just as she mentally prepared for the revelation before this young man, the owl saw Xue Dili had already fallen asleep against the wall.

The preprepared script lost its function at this moment. Athena was about to wake him up, but upon seeing his entire body covered in wounds and his irrepressible fatigue, she could only sigh.

Even though this noble hero was physically robust, he definitely wouldn't survive more than a month.

This was still under the premise that he no longer used that miraculous power.

However, since she was so close, she started to use the tiny Thread of Destiny hidden within her feathers.

She wanted to see the fate of this noble hero, and through the thread of destiny, glimpse his past, present, and future.

What kind of environment could have nurtured such a noble being? She was very curious.

Let me see your destiny!

In the next moment, the owl's pupils saw the ever-rotating cosmos and a brain on the verge of explosion, only leaving behind clear foolishness.

Athena ceased to think.JPG

...

She had always been curious about this human's ancestors.

Discover heroes, uncover the legends of their ancestors, and allow those legends to be inherited by descendants. This had always been the kind of story the gods loved most to witness.

Because in this era, any hero more or less had some divine blood; either they themselves were the Second Generation of Gods or Third Generation of Gods, or their ancestors were.

But this hero was completely different, as his true name was unknown, his past was unseen, nor could his ancestors be known.

Was he a hero aboard the Argo? Or a scion of some deity?

Whether it was curiosity or the desire to peek into the fate of this chosen follower, the owl that Athena had transformed into was an excited hawk rubbing its hands.

One end of the thread of destiny entwined around the owl's leg, then in the next moment, as if unreal, it entered Xue Dili's body.

Let me see!

Athena closed her eyes, ready to begin glimpsing destiny.

And then...

She was dumbfounded.

What she saw were modern buildings towering into the skies, the hustle and bustle of a metropolis, and connected everything via phones and computers…

And even more beyond!

A famous information scientist once said that for those living in the information age, the information they receive in any hour of internet browsing far exceeds the total information an ancient person received in a year.

Due to brain protection, this information often escapes memory retention, but remains deep within the subconscious forever.

And Athena, by her appearance, proved this theory correct.

For even the greatest adventure heroes of Ancient Greece had minds filled almost exclusively with cycles of adventure, plunder, lust, and adventure again.

Even peeking into the fates of the gods often only yielded a few more times the content, with little variation.

But now, Athena wasn't seeing one person's information, but almost an information bombardment on the scale of tens of millions, even hundreds of billions and trillions!

This information was instantaneously poured into Athena's mind in less than a millisecond, and she felt like her CPU was going to be fried.

Possibly for Xue Dili, the stories already seemed vague or forgotten. For Athena, those ebullient stories felt like she was living them personally.

No, to her now, she was truly experiencing them firsthand!

She went through the stuffed-knowledge student era of this mortal named "Xue Dili".

Underwent adventures in the Otherworld with the old Undead.

She saw countless… countless stories and worlds…

She witnessed the insignificance of life in the boundless cosmos, and had genuinely ventured into the deep realms of the stars, witnessing countless great adventures of others…

Many memories and information fuzzy to Xue Dili were as vivid as personal experiences to Athena, as if she traversed five thousand years of history in a few brief seconds.

Sumer, Camelot, Thermopylae, Odyssey, Celtic, Rome, Macedonia, Persia, Three Kingdoms, Industrial Revolution, Great Revolt, World War I, World War II…

She saw the endless waves.

She saw the King raising a bonfire, flames reaching the sky.

Witnessed the thousands of kilometers of city walls, guarded soldiers gazing afar into the endless horizon.

Saw the artistically intricate Chang'an City Gate, rising fireworks lighting the skies.

Where icy cold snow plains, soldiers charge with guns and bayonets, the smoke of gunpowder rising, blood staining the snowy ground with a beautiful melancholy.

Saw mechanical birds soaring to the heavens! Humanity's first conquest of the skies.

And in those oceans, numerous aircraft carriers and planes engaged in battle, detonating those hundreds of meters long ships.

And from within the rocket hatch, in the rapidly ascending footage, Earth's beautiful blue vista…

She seemed to witness the rise and fall of worlds, as if she personally lived through it all.

Students, office workers, ninjas, samurais, spies, teachers, soldiers, heroes, hunters…

Countless stories, innumerable Otherworlds, endless scenes; at the last, it seemed she truly arrived at the deep realms of the stars.

And there, a seemingly welcoming, white-robed elder said, "Hello, child, you may call me 'Yushua', Wise Man Yushua."
