Chef at the University Canteen

Chapter 86: Cafeteria Renovation Completed

When they got back to school, it was just after four in the afternoon.

Jiang Yu didn't return to the dorm, but went straight to the small building of the Seventh Dining Hall across from the stadium, wanting to first check how the kitchen installation was coming along.

Today was already the 2nd, and in five days, the Seventh Dining Hall would officially open, so there wasn't much preparation time left.

As soon as he arrived in front of the small building, Jiang Yu noticed that the big letters "Bodyle Fitness Club" originally embedded on the outer wall had been removed and replaced with the six red letters "Seventh Student Dining Hall".

There was no need to ponder; it must have been Hu Zhihai who got someone to do it.

Walking through the door, the floor covering had been removed, revealing large swathes of beige tiles, looking very clean and tidy.

In the dining area, rows of stainless steel tables and chairs were neatly arranged, with a small pot of vibrant and delicate green ivy placed on each table, which made people feel relaxed and cheerful just looking at them.

Hu Zhihai was very thoughtful, not only placing green ivy on the tables but also putting soft cushions on each stainless steel chair.

This way, even when the weather turned cold in winter, students coming to dine wouldn't hesitate to sit down because the chairs were too cold.

On the originally barren walls around, some amusing and ridiculous slogans were pasted:

Food people, food soul, food requires a big iron bowl!

Excuse me, where is the gourmet? Seventh Dining Hall's aroma wafts!

Although the dining hall is small, the excitement isn't compromised a bit!

...

Seeing these slogans on the wall, Jiang Yu couldn't help but chuckle.

This Hu Zhihai, truly worthy of being the son of a tycoon, with his 200-pound body, at least 100 pounds must be commercial acumen. It's truly a waste if he doesn't go into business!

Shaking his head, Jiang Yu didn't bother with these small details anymore. Honestly, these slogans do help liven up the atmosphere of the dining hall.

Beyond the dining area, upfront was a row of food-serving windows; the setup here was no different from other dining halls, with each window separated by transparent glass, leaving space below for tray delivery.

On the far right of the dining hall window, there was a door, which if entered, leads directly to the kitchen work area.

Before Jiang Yu had a chance to enter, he suddenly heard Hu Zhihai's voice coming from inside:

"Hey gentlemen, come on, let's work a bit harder and move this steam oven over there. It's too close to the vegetable washing sink. If someone accidentally splashes water on the oven shell while using it, it'll cause a short circuit, which would be a big problem.

Also, let's move this refrigerator too. Let me think, yes, put it in the prep room. If left in this operation room, surrounded by stoves, it's too hot to maintain freshness..."

As he was speaking, he looked up and saw Jiang Yu walking in. After being momentarily stunned, he quickly showed a surprised expression and hurried over, saying,

"You came back so quickly? I thought you'd only be back tomorrow at the earliest. How's everything at home?"

"Oh, it's fine. I came back as soon as I finished sorting things out,"

Jiang Yu nodded, glanced around, and said with a smile, "Looks like everything is almost set inside and out here. Are all the kitchen appliances installed?"

"Yes, just some equipment needs a positional adjustment,"

Hu Zhihai glanced around too, then turned back with a proud look and said,

"My work efficiency is reliable, right? Lao Jiang, don't always say all I do is eat, eat, eat. This 200-pound body of mine isn't just fat, it's crystallized wisdom!"

"Come on, stop it."

Jiang Yu chuckled, continuing to say,

"The pots, bowls, and other items I asked Boss Zhao to help purchase should arrive tomorrow. Besides that, there shouldn't be any problems. By the way, did you ask about the part-time work for the impoverished students?"

"As soon as you left yesterday, I contacted the minister of the student work-study department to notify some available impoverished students to come for interviews here at the Seventh Dining Hall at 1:30 PM on the 3rd. They should have been notified by now."

"Alright, then I'll come over tomorrow afternoon to select a few diligent students."

"..."

After a brief conversation, the workers had moved the steam oven and refrigerator to the designated spots, and Hu Zhihai clapped and thanked them before letting them go.

Turning back, Jiang Yu asked,

"By the way, Zhihai, how much did the renovation and purchasing cost in total?"

"Ah, you're suddenly asking. How would I remember right now?"

"Then calculate how much you spent when you get back, and I'll repay you later."

Jiang Yu nodded, adding, "Also, the rent for the second dining hall that you advanced will be reimbursed as well."

"What? No need to rush, I'm not in urgent need for money..."

"Whether you're in urgent need or not is your business. What's owed needs to be paid, even among close friends and brothers, accounts must be clear."

"Ah, this... Are you saying our relationship isn't as close as brothers?!"

"..."

After taking a tour in the newly renovated kitchen, seeing the clean and bright operations, new gleaming exhaust fans, and spotless workstations, Jiang Yu felt an inexplicable sense of satisfaction.

This place will be his domain in the future.

Thinking this, Jiang Yu suddenly remembered something and looked at Hu Zhihai, asking:

"I almost forgot, after the dining hall kitchen is built, it needs to pass inspections by the fire department, health department, and such before it can be used. But since it's vacation, where do we find someone to conduct the inspections?"

"Don't worry, when I invited the construction team, they reminded me about this in advance,"

Hu Zhihai said, smiling, while waving his hands.

"Even before the vacation, I had contacted the fire department and health department and scheduled inspection times with them. They'll send people to inspect it these days,

so rest assured, it won't delay our opening!"

"Oh, good to hear."

Jiang Yu breathed a sigh of relief.

Although he knew beforehand that inspections were necessary for the dining hall kitchen, he had been too swamped with things lately to remember to tell Hu Zhihai.

Fortunately, Hu Zhihai took care of it in advance...

After staying in the kitchen a bit longer, Jiang Yu and Hu Zhihai went up to the second floor to take a look.

The shelves that were originally on the second floor had all been cleared out, and somehow Hu Zhihai had found two pool tables which were placed in the front, along with a bar. The cabinet behind displayed an array of snacks, with a large refrigerator next to it filled with all kinds of drinks.

Seeing Jiang Yu's speechless expression, Hu Zhihai laughed and said,

"I'm not planning to run a pool hall here; this is for us to play. With so many people at our place, we can't just work every day; we need some entertainment and relaxation too."

Jiang Yu shook his head but didn't comment, continuing further inside.

A bit deeper inside, two separate rooms had been partitioned off, along with a bathroom and a shower.

In the future, if Jiang Yu worked too late, he wouldn't need to trek back to the dorm but could stay here directly.

After taking a tour, the sky outside was darkening.

Jiang Yu didn't linger any longer, said goodbye to Hu Zhihai and together they went downstairs, locked the door, and headed towards the direction of the second dining hall.
