Merging with Demon Spirits

Chapter 51: Surprise

Lin Feng and Gao Hai returned to the front gate of the neighborhood; it was already close to ten thirty.

"Why are you only just getting back?" Under the complaining eyes of the security guard, the two of them swiped their cards and entered the complex.

The night was bright; aside from moonlight reflecting off the Blue Moon Barrier, the neighborhood was pitch black, not even a Ghost Shadow in sight.

Taking a breath of air, Lin Feng furrowed his brows.

Although Awakening Day had passed for three days, the pungent smell of blood still lingered. Mixed faintly with the scent of disinfectant, the combination made people want to vomit.

"Brother Feng, if the netizens found out that your endorsement fee was as high as eighteen million, they'd probably go nuts."

"Landing advertisements since senior year of high school—if you say that, our classmates wouldn't believe it!"

All the way, Gao Hai was visibly excited, as if he couldn't run out of things to say.

"That's true enough," Lin Feng laughed as well.

Originally, that amount of money had been weighing down on him so much it was hard to breathe. Now the pressure was gone, and he was obviously much more relaxed.

"Brother Feng, you've made such a big pile of cash—what do you want to do most?"

"First, move into the Inner City. Living in the Outer City is just inconvenient."

"Moving house? Makes sense. Which complex are you thinking of buying into? When it happens, I'll go crash for a few days."

"The sooner the better. Let's go check out places tomorrow."

"If you move, then we won't be going to school together anymore."

Talking about this, the usually excited Gao Hai held back his disappointment and couldn't help but lament.

For Lin Feng to make it big and move into the Inner City, Gao Hai was naturally happy for him.

On the day of their sixteen-year-old Awakening Day, refining the dream Demon Spirit and becoming a Demon Spirit Master, superior to Martial Artists, was the dream of both brothers.

After becoming a Demon Spirit Master, getting into the Nine Elite Joint Schools, graduating and landing a good job, making big money, moving to the Inner City—changing the life of their whole family was the goal they fought for.

Now, Ya Ge had done it, signed with the Juxing Club; soon she'd probably get into one of the Three Heroic Academies.

As for Lin Feng, though he hadn't refined a Demon Spirit, it was because he set his sights higher. He wanted to refine an Earth Chart Demon Spirit, and now, as a senior in high school, he was already landing ads with an endorsement fee of eighteen million—how many people could compare?

Their two best friends who grew up together had both soared high and stepped into the elite class. Only Gao Hai, though he'd become a Demon Spirit Master, had only refined a Second Grade Strong Demon Bull.

Compared to others, becoming a Demon Spirit Master was already lucky—but compared to Lin Feng and Ya Ge, he was still as nameless as ever.

"Afraid I'll never be able to move into the Inner City for the rest of my life," Gao Hai thought bitterly.

"You're not going to school with me?"

Lin Feng could sense Gao Hai's disappointment and asked curiously.

"You'll be in the Inner City, I'll be in the Outer City. How could we go together?"

Gao Hai replied dejectedly.

He and Lin Feng had gone to school together and come home together since childhood; it had become a habit of life.

Compared to feeling down, he was more worried that as time passed, his relationship with Lin Feng would drift apart.

Once Lin Feng signed with the club and made it into one of the Three Heroic Academies, they'd only get further and further apart.

"Haha."

Lin Feng smiled gently, deciding not to tease Gao Hai anymore, and said with a grin, "Tomorrow we'll move house together."

"Move together?"

Gao Hai was still processing, "Aren't you just checking out houses tomorrow? Moving already?"

Lin Feng threw an arm over Gao Hai's shoulders and smiled, "I mean you're coming to live in the Inner City with me!"

Gao Hai was stunned, unable to believe his own ears.

"What do you mean?"

Gao Hai suddenly looked up at Lin Feng, as if he understood something, but still couldn't believe it.

"This money always had your share."

Lin Feng kept walking as he spoke, "Tomorrow, come with me to check out places in the Inner City. We're brothers—one apartment each."

Lin Feng had a huge sum of eighteen million, originally all set aside for refining Nightmare.

Thirteen million to buy Qi and Blood Pills and Soul Nourishing Pills; five million as insurance, to hire a Five Tier Spirit Series Demon Spirit Master for protection.

But back then, Lin Feng made a budget assuming the worst-case—two months, tops.

But now, just three days later, he'd already broken through the Eighth Rank Body Cultivator, and his Qi and Blood was much richer than before.

Right now, inside Lin Feng's body, the Nightmare hadn't been assimilated much by his blood yet; refining it now, he wouldn't need ten million worth of pills—at least three million could be saved, and the five million to hire the Spirit Series master could also be spared.

In other words, out of the eighteen million, after setting aside ten million for refining Nightmare, he still had eight million to use.

That eight million, he planned to spend on buying houses, changing their living conditions first.

"I only put in five hundred, Brother Feng— I can't accept…" Gao Hai shook his head quickly, refusing.

To be honest, he really was tempted. After all, moving into the Inner City had been his family's dream since childhood.

It's just that he'd only handed Lin Feng five hundred yuan—five hundred gets you a whole apartment?

He didn't know which complex Lin Feng wanted or how big the apartment was, but even the cheapest in the Inner City cost two or three million.

This was just too much money—he couldn't accept it.

"We're brothers. What's mine is yours," Lin Feng said with a smile.

Hearing this, Gao Hai lowered his head, eyes reddening. He didn't dare speak, afraid he'd burst into tears if he did.

"Why are you so moved?"

Seeing Gao Hai about to cry, Lin Feng found it amusing, and teased, "Come on, who am I? South Yeqiu, North Linfeng—if Ye Qiu signs with Thunder and gets a salary of three hundred million a year, would I Lin Feng be any worse? Would I begrudge you an apartment?"

He knew Lin Feng was comforting him.

But somehow it sounded so logical.

With those words, Gao Hai felt much better. He forced back his tears, "Brother Feng, thank you."

"Thank me, my ass. Let's go pick out apartments tomorrow."

"Not bringing family?"

To Gao Hai, buying an apartment was a big deal; including family was natural.

"No need. Let's give them a surprise." Lin Feng chuckled, "Alright, I'm home. See you tomorrow morning."

"Mm."

Gao Hai watched Lin Feng walk up the dim stairs, unmoving for a long while. The tears he'd been fighting finally spilled out.

"Brother Feng, thank you."

Gao Hai murmured, and after a long time, finally headed home. He wiped the tears from his face, leaving only hope for a better future.

Lin Feng gently opened the door, careful not to make a sound and wake his big sister and younger sister sleeping in the living room.

He'd just switched shoes and stepped into the living room. In the dim candlelight, he realized his family hadn't gone to bed; they were all waiting for him on the couch.

"You're back!"

Seeing her son come home, Lin Fang, who'd been anxious, finally breathed out in relief.

Though Lin Feng had called earlier to say he wouldn't be home for dinner, it was so late and, as a mother, she couldn't help but worry.

"You're back. Did you eat?" Sister Lin Kerou was clearly sleepy, but still forced herself to stay awake and asked.

"I ate. Why are you all still up, waiting for me?" "Your mom was worried, and we just ended up chatting," Old Ma explained.

This morning, the post 'High Schooler Beats Up Martial Artist' shot to number one on the daily chart; the whole neighborhood knew, and Old Ma was no exception.

Not to mention, Lin Feng's arena match actually made the evening news tonight!

Old Ma never expected Lin Feng to be so strong—even a First Grade Martial Artist wasn't his match. Although there were a lot of people doubting Lin Feng's Soul Cultivator talent, Old Ma chose to believe in Lin Feng.

They stayed up late, worried the netizens' doubt and insults would put pressure on him.

"Xiaofeng, how about you skip Thunder Martial Arts Dojo tomorrow?"

Lin Fang saw Lin Feng looking natural, not at all upset, but still hesitated for a moment before saying it.

She'd only learned from neighbors today how much of a stir Lin Feng had caused.

She'd also checked Martial Artist Forum posts. The doubts, insults, and ridicule there had made her really anxious.

She was scared Lin Feng wouldn't be able to handle that kind of pressure, that something would happen.

There were less than three months left till the entrance exams—matters that could decide his whole life.

Lin Feng understood exactly what his family was worried about.

Originally he'd planned to give them a surprise after buying the apartments, but seeing their worry, he smiled and decided to reveal news that would shock them all.

"I already sold the ad slots!"
