Doctor: Picking Up Attributes in the Hospital

Chapter 213: Heart-to-Heart at Midnight

11 o'clock at night.

At the entrance of Eastern Hospital, Zhao Heng arrived at the break room of the operating theater carrying a big bag of late-night snacks.

As Zhao Heng walked in, Xu Man Ni, who had just finished a surgery and was sitting down to rest, stood up with joyful surprise in her eyes.

"Why are you here?"

Xu Man Ni jogged over to Zhao Heng, speaking with great surprise.

Seeing her lover after a tiring surgery is indeed quite a delightful surprise.

"I thought you were on the night shift, so I brought over some snacks."

Zhao Heng smiled and said.

"I brought a lot, let's all eat together."

Zhao Heng added.

"Okay."

Xu Man Ni nodded sweetly, the fatigue from the night-time surgery seemingly dissipated at that moment.

"Everyone, come and have some."

Xu Man Ni took the snacks from Zhao Heng's hands and placed them on the table in the break room.

Wow!

As soon as they opened it, everyone in the break room was stunned.

There were Australian lobster, roast lamb leg, various exquisite desserts, and drinks.

It was so lavish!

No one expected the snacks Zhao Heng brought to be so extravagant.

"Dr. Zhao, you went to great lengths."

"Sister Man, we're all benefiting because of you."

"This night shift is totally worth it!"

Everyone chimed in with various comments.

Even though Xu Man Ni was delighted, after inviting everyone to eat, she pulled Zhao Heng aside and said, "You don't need to spend so much money on snacks in the future, just get some barbecue or something."

Xu Man Ni was used to enjoying life, and she knew just by looking at the snacks, they cost at least two thousand.

If she spent the money herself, it wasn't a big deal, but she knew that although Zhao Heng's career was picking up, he wasn't yet financially well-off.

"Liu Ziang footed the bill."

Zhao Heng smiled and said.

"What? Wouldn't that cost him a fortune?"

Upon hearing this, Xu Man Ni was taken aback, then laughed and said.

"He insists on having me every time there's a high-difficulty overnight surgery."

Zhao Heng complained.

"Well, you're probably the only one in Eastern Hospital who can get a meal on Liu Ziang's tab. For others, let alone a meal, even a kind word from him is hard to come by."

Xu Man Ni was pleased with Zhao Heng and Liu Ziang's good relationship.

"But we must return the favor next time."

After a pause, Xu Man Ni added.

"Of course."

Zhao Heng nodded. The banter of sponging off a friend was just a joke among friends, and he wouldn't really take advantage of Liu Ziang.

Even though neither Liu Ziang nor Zhao Heng cared about such things, they still had principles to uphold, which was different.

After chatting for a while, Xu Man Ni felt a bit hungry, so she joined everyone to eat.

After eating and tidying up the table, they noticed the time: it was already midnight.

"It's already this late."

Xu Man Ni checked the time, realizing how late it had gotten.

"You should go back and rest, you have work tomorrow."

Xu Man Ni said to Zhao Heng.

"It's so late already, I won't go back. I'll just stay overnight in the hospital ward's break room."

Zhao Heng thought for a moment and said.

At this hour, it's hard to get a cab, and it would take half an hour to get home. His elderly parents were light sleepers and needed to set up shop in the afternoon; returning now would disturb them, and they wouldn't sleep well.

"You won't sleep well in the break room either."

Xu Man Ni said.

She was on a full night shift and wouldn't be getting much sleep anyway.

"It's fine, I'm used to it."

Zhao Heng said nonchalantly.

As long as there was a place to sleep, why bother being picky?

"How about I talk to the head nurse, switch shifts, and then we can go to my place? It's closer, just a ten-minute walk."

Xu Man Ni thought for a moment and said.

Encouraged by Zhao Heng's affectionate gesture tonight, she couldn't focus on work and just wanted to be with him.

"That works."

Zhao Heng nodded.

Xu Man Ni was a candidate for the next head nurse, so switching shifts was simple for her.

Twenty minutes later.

Zhao Heng and Xu Man Ni arrived at Xu Man Ni's place.

As soon as they entered, Xu Man Ni hugged Zhao Heng.

Tonight, Zhao Heng had truly touched her deeply.

She used to think Zhao Heng wouldn't make such gestures, but she was pleasantly surprised by his warmth tonight.

"Will you always treat me this well?"

Xu Man Ni held Zhao Heng and looked at him as she asked.

"Of course."

Zhao Heng smiled and replied.

Hearing Zhao Heng's firm answer, a warm feeling surged through Xu Man Ni's heart.

"Get some sleep; you just finished a surgery."

Seeing Xu Man Ni's subtle movements, Zhao Heng couldn't help but say.

"It's okay, I switched shifts; I have a day off."

Xu Man Ni said, her eyes filled with a fiery look at Zhao Heng.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Heng couldn't resist.

...

Details omitted here for discretion, but this time, Zhao Heng took a more active role.

"Why aren't you sleeping yet?"

Zhao Heng asked as he saw Xu Man Ni watching him, gently brushing her hair aside.

"I just want to look at you."

Xu Man Ni said.

She felt very content now; Zhao Heng had fulfilled all her expectations of a man.

"Do you think I should quit and open a shop or something? Working day and night like this, even though we're working in the same hospital, it feels like we're separated by the Milky Way."

After a pause, Xu Man Ni suddenly said.

She worked mostly out of interest; not to mention, her multiple properties and shops were enough to last her a lifetime.

Being with Zhao Heng further fueled this idea.

"But aren't you running for head nurse? I'm not sure opening a shop suits you."

Zhao Heng thought for a moment and said.

Xu Man Ni had worked in the hospital for many years and prepared long to run for head nurse; giving it up just like that would be a shame.

"Do you really think so?"

Upon hearing Zhao Heng's words, Xu Man Ni asked.

"Of course. Life isn't limited to one path. I think our job is very meaningful. If you just wanted to open a shop and focus on money, you shouldn't have spent so many years studying medicine—you might have opened a shop sooner."

Zhao Heng said.

"I just appreciate your support."

Xu Man Ni nodded, finding Zhao Heng's words comforting.

She didn't want to live a parasitic life, so she chose to study medicine and work in a hospital.

Different people have different pursuits; Xu Man Ni grew up in comfort and abundance and didn't aspire to a leisurely parasitic lifestyle.

Moreover, even though the work is tough, with a good family background and ample material foundation, she's able to work with ease.
