I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!

Chapter 152: Gifts

Leo stepped out of the lift, his clothes stained with blood.

Everyone who saw him was taken aback. This was especially true for the young prisoner who had taken on the role of the technician.

"Are you alright?" he asked Leo, his expression growing more bewildered by the second.

He could see Leo's clothes were torn, especially at the chest. Fortunately, Leo was already pulling off the ruined shirt as he stepped out of the lift.

It allowed the others to see that his body was completely unharmed. But if he wasn't wounded, why was there a hole in his clothes, and whose blood was it?

"Did you kill the prisoner?" the technician asked, even as Leo pulled a fresh shirt from his storage ring.

He slid his arms into the sleeves and pulled the shirt on. The people standing behind him noticed a vague tattoo on his back that was fading rapidly until it completely disappeared.

"I would've been quite impressed with myself if I actually could have killed her," Leo said in a low voice, almost talking to himself.

"Sorry, I couldn't hear what you said?" the technician asked.

"I said, floor zero should be placed in lockdown again. The lift will not go down anymore!"

Leo wasn't certain why the girl was on the lowest floor or what this familiar feeling was, but he knew one thing for certain: she was dangerous.

He hadn't even seen her face, but based on her voice alone, she sounded quite young. Her voice matched the image he had seen in the database, as if she had not aged even a single year.

Leo locked the special lift, which was the only way to reach the lowest floor.

Without it, he was certain she couldn't escape. If she could reach the surface on her own, why would the prison warden be keeping such a dangerous person here? Wouldn't she have left already?

"Is that person really that dangerous?" the technician asked.

Leo answered, "Calling her dangerous would be an understatement. Let's just say that if anyone except me had gone there, they wouldn't have returned alive."

Leo was certain of that. Even as a human, there were some things he could instinctively feel. If he didn't have the gift from Selene, he would've been dead.

Lost in thought, he took a seat and closed his eyes. She definitely knows Selene and Voldred. But she doesn't match the description of any of the three surviving ancient clans.

"Urgh, why do things have to be so complicated?" He rubbed his temples. "Whatever, I suppose I will ask Voldred about it when I see him."

He stopped thinking about it and nearly slammed his head on the table as he stood up.

"That's right... no point in thinking about things that are not in my control. It would be much more useful to try to win over the ones who are normal..."

Leo returned to work. For the next week, he visited the other floors, meeting prisoners who were clearly more dangerous than the ones he had freed, but not nearly as terrifying as the girl on the lowest floor.

After reading their files, he already understood how to win them over. Although the process of gaining their trust wasn't as swift as he would have liked, he was making progress.

The allure of freedom was incredible, after all. He just had to offer them a way out and tell a made-up sob story about himself to break down their walls.

Even if he couldn't get them to work for him immediately after their release, he could at least build friendly relationships with them.

In that week, Leo also met with his branch manager a few more times. On the first occasion, the manager brought thousands of newly purchased communication devices.

Leo gifted these to the prisoners, letting them get a glimpse of the outer world. Those who truly appreciated the gesture were the ones locked on the lower floors, especially since they rarely saw any new faces.

"Is this what you call a communicator?" An old voice came from the second-lowest floor, where a man in white looked at the glass screen in fascination.

His hair was ruffled, as if it hadn't been washed in centuries. Wrinkles lined his face, and his beard had grown so long it touched his toes when he stood.

"That's right, old man. Fascinating, isn't it?"

Leo taught the old man how to use the device, as if he were teaching a grandfather who wasn't familiar with modern technology. As holograms projected from the screen, the old man's eyes lit up.

To him, this was like magic, yet he couldn't feel any mana coming from the device. His lips parted as he observed the device like a curious child. His eyes literally looked as if they had sparkles in them; at least, that's how it felt to Leo.

Leo didn't find it surprising. He had read the man's file, which was why he had come up with this plan. The old man was not from a world that prioritized technology, at least not at the time he was captured.

What his world lacked in tech, it made up for in magic. His world was said to be one of the first to discover magic.

This was why Leo found the man so interesting. He came from a world where anyone could learn magic without needing to be 'awakened' like the heroes of Earth.

Magic wasn't a gift like super abilities; it was something people worked hard for.

This old man was the last surviving member of that planet, which had stood on equal footing with the highest-ranking planets of his era. If the Galactic Union had existed back then, Leo was sure this man would have been a prominent figure in it.

"Hmph, why are you smiling like an idiot? No matter how impressive that piece of glass is, it's still just an object."

While Leo was teaching the old man how to use the Galactic Net, a hoarse voice came from a nearby cell.
