I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!

Chapter 156: Competition of Skills

The old mage, whose name was Ulen, but who currently looked like a disgruntled grandfather in a high-visibility vest, stared at Yang.

A slow, mischievous glint sparked in his clouded eyes.

"A battle like that?" Ulen mused, stroking his long, white beard. "You, a man who knows only how to break things, think you can lead a team to create? It's laughable."

The old man didn't like fighting, even though he was extremely strong. After all, most of his life before being imprisoned involved fighting and killing.

That's why he kept rejecting the invitation to fight, no matter how many times Yang insisted. But if this was the battle, then even he was a little interested since he hadn't competed like this before.

There was also another benefit, as he could use his magic to lead people, and create architecture inspired by his world of magic that didn't exist anymore.

It was his way to ensure that even though insignificant, a small part of his world's history survived.

"My side of the city will be a masterpiece!" Ulen said. "Meanwhile, I'm certain that your side of the city would look no different than a demolition."

"Masterpiece? It'll be a pile of rocks, old man!" Yang roared, his competitive spirit catching fire. "My part of the city will have the tallest buildings and the sturdiest foundations this side of the galaxy.

Leo suppressed a grin, his thumb hovering over his clipboard. "Excellent. Since this is a formal challenge of Overall Superiority, we shall call it the Great Urbanization Duel."

"I'll provide an assistant to help you with any questions you might have, but the execution... well, it will rely entirely on you." he added, trying his hardest to prevent himself from smiling.

"I will provide each of you with a hundred workers. How many people you can convince to work for you beyond that, without violence, will also be part of your challenge."

Leo didn't outright assign the prisoners. After all, they were free people on the surface. So he basically left these two to get them to work, and take part in the challenge.

He only planned to assign two hundred or the original workers that were already working in this city.

"Now, remember," Leo added, his voice filled with fake concern, "the winner gets the Certificate of Supremacy, framed in a gold-plated alloy. The loser... Well, the loser has to wear the 'Intern of the Month' badge for the next thirty days and fetch the winner's coffee."

He further talked about the punishment that the loser will receive, igniting their fighting spirits again, especially since none of the two wanted to work like a servant for the other.

The air between the two powerhouses was filled with incredible tension, especially when the punishment was mentioned.

It was perhaps the first time in history that a Martial Master and a Great Mage were preparing to go to war over the placement of sewage pipes and electrical grids.

"I choose the North Quadrant!" Yang exclaimed, already pointing at a desolate stretch of craters.

"You lot! You with the three eyes! And you, the guy who looks like he can lift a mountain! Follow me! We're going to build a tavern first. Every great city starts with a tavern!"

"The South Quadrant shall be mine," Ulen declared, appearing a person of noble bearing, waving a hand toward his chosen group of prisoners.

"Ignore the brute. We shall focus on the library and the aesthetic flow of the residential parks at the start. We are not just building houses; we are building culture."

Although Leo hadn't assigned any prisoners, the two took the lead. Even though the prisoners wanted to take it easy, could they refuse these two powerhouses?

Even though some of them looked like they wanted to cry and ask for Leo's help, they couldn't do that.

During the demolition, they had already seen how strong these two were. None of them wanted to challenge their authority.

Within seconds, the prisoners were divided between two sides.

As the two groups stormed off in opposite directions, kicking up clouds of dust, the other prisoners stood around in a daze.

They had gone from being federal fugitives to unpaid laborers in the span of five minutes, and somehow, most of them were actually excited about it.

After all, it was an intriguing challenge in the sheet place. It was also a way to get close to these powerhouses.

Leo watched them go, finally letting a small, tired smile play on his lips.

"Boss," one of his actual employees whispered, stepping up beside him. "Are we really going to let them take control of this construction? What if they mess things up? The project already cost so much."

"Absolutely," Leo said, checking his watch. "And make sure the gold plating in the certificate isn't cheap stuff. After all, it's a certificate they would be flexing at another person's face for a long time."

He looked up at the dark sky of the planet. Most people in the world believed that he was as good as dead now.

Meanwhile, he was about to become the only man in the universe to have such powerful people personally oversee the installation of a planet-wide construction.

"Now," Leo muttered, turning back toward the ship. "Now that we are at it, maybe I should actually start a new company to give people their official title, making it easier for them to move in the light."

Currently, these people are working for free. However, the construction company that had taken the command of this project, was simply one he had hired from those that were trusted by his branch manager.

He didn't actually own the company. His initial plan was to start a security company and get those with a problematic past to work for it.

But somehow, the plan had changed. Somehow, he ended up with people that had a problematic past, but he wasn't planning a security company now. Instead, he was planning a construction company as a front.

There was only one problem. He was supposed to be a fugitive now, so he couldn't file for a new company without making his presence known.
