A buzzing sound came from behind Leo as the edge of the chains struck the laser. Leo also clenched his teeth, yet he couldn't control a painful groan as a small part of the laser also grazed his upper arm.
Timmy saw sparkles behind Leo, which were accompanied by a sharp sound of the laser cutting through the chains.
As the laser grids were so close to each other, it was almost impossible to cut through the chain cleanly without hurting himself.
The best Leo could do was minimize the damage to himself, playing with the distance and angles. Unfortunately, that wasn't a perfect solution either.
The laser burned through Leo's flesh, albeit a little less deep than it burned the chain. Still, the pain was so strong that Leo's face had gone almost pale.
Fortunately, the laser was very effective against the chains. The chains, albeit unbreakable with human strength, couldn't resist the lasers that could slice through the strongest metal blocks with ease.
The process lasted only a few seconds before one part of the chain was cleanly cut. As soon as it happened, Leo pushed his body forward, his breathing heavy from pain.
His body was drenched in sweat, and his clothes, along with some of his flesh were torn in the upper arm. Fortunately, Leo was calculating enough that the wound, although painful, was shallow.
The sound of chains clanking filled the prison cell. Now that a connecting part of the chain was cut, Leo could easily free himself from the rest.
With a thud, the heavy chain fell on the ground, and Leo immediately brought his burnt arm forward. He tore off the sleeve from his shirt, which was much easier since the laser had already left a cut there.
Leo applied pressure on his wound, and then started trying the torn piece of cloth around as tightly as possible. It was hard to do it with just one hand, and the sharp stinging pain was also strong when he placed pressure.
Still, he achieved his goal. On the arm that was missing a sleeve, he had tied the cloth strip to close the wound as best as he could.
"Why did you do it? Aren't you scared?" Timmy asked, breaking the silence.
For a long time, his words had been stuck in his throat. It was only now that he managed to utter his thoughts.
"It's not like I lost my arm? With this era's healing tech that can even regrow an arm, what's a wound like this?"
"Still, wasn't it painful? I could never have done something like this. To lose a piece of my flesh... Just the thought is scary."
Leo didn't answer as seriously as Timmy had expected.
Instead, Leo burst into laughter. "Wouldn't you need to have some flesh in the first place to lose it?"
He ruffled Timmy's hair, as he walked past him and sat on the ground with his back resting against a wall.
Without his hands tied behind his back, it was much more comfortable.
Leo didn't show any displeasure or pain but Timmy could still see the pale face of Leo. He looked extremely exhausted.
Until now, Timmy had been worried about himself. But he had started observing Leo a lot more now.
'Just what kind of life has this man lived, to not even show any fear in this situation?' He thought to himself, observing Leo who was trying to stabilize his chaotic breathing.
He wasn't wrong. Leo was actually tired. Ever since he entered the Hero Tower, he hadn't received even a wink of sleep. Even then, he didn't show any signs of distress or falling apart.
"You said there was good news and bad news? What was the bad news?" Timmy gulped heavily before asking.
Leo didn't seem to have any superhuman abilities, yet Timmy had started to fear and respect this man. If even he was considering something bad news, then what could it be?
"Well, the bad news is that this alone isn't enough for us to escape." Leo mumbled. "But this is a good start. This gives us more cards to play."
"By the way, don't you want to know why I said it was good news that these people underestimated us?" he asked.
"Why?" Timmy frowned.
"Because if they didn't underestimate us, wouldn't they check us more thoroughly and take this away?" Leo inserted his hands in his pocket and brought out a glass slab.
"It's your..." Timmy's eyes lit up at the sight.
He didn't carry his phone with him. His phone was still on the ship's deck when these aliens barged in and took them down.
He didn't realize that it was true. The aliens truly didn't check Leo! With a communication device, can't they call for help? This was truly an incredible opportunity to call for help and escape.
"This will become our key to escape. I just need to..."
Leo unlocked the glass slab, and entered his home screen. A larger holographic screen materialized before him, with the contacts that he had saved.
......
Error... Unable to connect to the Galactic Net. Please check your net connection and device settings.
......
Leo had barely opened the screen when he was greeted by a notification, which almost made him fall face first to the floor.
"You motherf-" Leo almost cursed out loud in disbelief.
What did it mean it couldn't connect to the Galactic Net? It was working perfectly fine in Timmy's Ship even in space.
Looking at Timmy's expressions, Leo coughed lightly. "Don't worry. It happens sometimes. It's an old model. I just need to restart it."
Leo switched off the device and turned it on again to troubleshoot it.
The silence as the device was turning on, felt like the longest and most awkward silence for Leo.
Unfortunately, even then, the outcome was still the same. The device couldn't connect to the Galactic Net that was known to be prevalent in almost every space sector.
Galactic Net didn't need Earth's Tower or frequency. Distance from earth shouldn't have mattered, so why?
"Timmy, I think I have bad news and worse news. Which one would you like to hear first?" Leo said after unsuccessfully messing with every setting he possibly could.
