It didn't take long for the Aegis Corps to get wind of what happened and make their way to Carly's house. After all, she did violate her house arrest by fighting Jin as she was beaten off her property.
Jin waited, sitting on the rooftop of a nearby house, to see what the Aegis Corps would uncover. Honestly, he didn't care about hiding his tracks or anything, but he was so thorough that he did so by accident.
Even then, he didn't even bleed the entire fight, and his mana hides his finerprints and so on. This is because when mana is surrounding the body, technically, it's the mana that's touching the objects, not his hand.
Being that the person who was killed was a former councilwoman, the Aegis Corps handled this matter with care, going over what happened without missing anything. But when they found Roselyn and Ryan dead, they knew that this was to be handled with the utmost care.
A chuckle escaped Jin's mouth as he watched the Corps scramble to understand what had happened.
As he was about to leave, Mrs Horton floated down next to him, taking a seat on the roof.
"You did this, didn't you?" She didn't attack him, nor did she get upset with him. She just sat down, faced forward, and asked him if he did this.
"I learned what happened." He replied.
"I see. I understand."
"Do you?"
"I do. I took matters into my own hands when I learned about your mother's death. Hundreds of people died at my hands. That's why I'm not on the council anymore."
"I know about that as well. And because of that, I will forgive you, slightly."
"Heh, thanks." Mrs Horton took a deep breath. "You use magic, don't you? At first, I thought that your technology was just that good, which it is, but the more I saw you fight, the more I didn't understand how you could do the things you do."
"How do you know about magic?" Jin wasn't even surprised that she knew about magic. It seemed as if everyone knew about it.
"When you started talking about your past lives, I thought you were just saying random things, but then I thought about my mentor. She was, well, she claimed to be a goddess. She helped me understand my power better. Funnily enough, she had the same name as me, kind of. My nickname is Lacey, and her real name is Lacey, heh."
"Lacey Zagan?" Jin asked
Mrs Horton's eyes widened. "You know her?"
"She's a friend."
Maybe the saying 'small world' should apply to the universe. But in actuality, it was just a coincidence.
"Listen, Mrs Horton. After learning everything, I feel inclined to give you one last chance. For the past few weeks, you've ignored my warnings, put the planet in jeopardy, and done things behind my back that led to near-catastrophic events. Honestly, I wanted to kill you, and I was this close to doing so, but I thought about my mom and how she would feel if I did that to her mentor without at least talking to her about it."
Jin finally decided to look at her. "So, here is me extending my hand. Let's go back to our past relationship, me being the reckless guy, with you being the woman with authority, listening to my advice to better help everyone."
Mrs Horton didn't need to think about it; she knew that accepting his hand was the right thing to do.
"I'm sorry for not sticking by your side for these past few weeks. And I'm sorry for everything I've done. I'll have your back from now on." She smiled. Then, she frowned.
"But why did you kill Sherry?"
"Miss Lockman? Well, she was just very aggravating. Also, it turns out that I was correct in doing so. You see, there's another threat out there. Edens Garden is their name. They're the parent organization of the Sons of Adam. She's a member of them. Or I guess she was a member."
Jin then explained how every mission he took from her had him run into the Sons of Adam, and he explained what he knew about their goals.
"Could they have been behind the Láspi breaking out of our confinement?" She wondered
"No idea. It looked as if she was surprised by what happened as well, right? So probably not. But we can't rule out the possibility. Oh, I also need to look at your uhh, Dimensional Slicer weapon."
"Whoa! Slow down, sport. That's out of my jurisdiction. I'm not on the council anymore. I can't simply give you access to that. And this isn't me going against you, I literally can't."
Jin understood what she meant. "What about the black box then? The schematics for the weapon are in that box. If I can get them, then I can create a weapon like that to fight against the Láspi."
"Oof, that's going to be even harder. The black box is the most guarded item in the Aegis Corps. So guarded that everything in there still uses paper and isn't digital."
'Paper? What the hell?'
"Just tell me the location. I'll handle the rest."
"You—" She sighed. "It's in the vault."
"Huh?" Jin had no idea what she was talking about.
"What? You've been in our system for so long, and you don't know about the vault?"
"Woman, if this shit was in your system, I would have known about it!"
"Ah, that's right. Well, it's in an underwater base in the eastern ocean that we have completely off the records."
"An underwater base where you have paper files? Sounds pretty dumb."
She shook her head. "That's the point."
"Oh, then that makes sense. Where is this vault?"
"Dunno. The location changes every day to prevent people from finding it if they learn of its existence."
While that was going to be annoying to locate, it wouldn't be impossible.
"Alright, I'll head there once I finish up with everything that I need to do."
