"Ah shit, I missed?"
I feel self-loathing that this sniping with catapult failed too. According to hand signals from Lune who climbed the even higher watchtower, a knight beside them threw their body to save who appears to be the enemy commander.
"Then just hit other guys. Kids, load it."
Following my instructions, subordinate orcs load a gargoyle bust onto the launcher. I stand on two feet on a thick wooden plank.
"Luuune!! Going straight to Plan B!!"
Lune's squad member waves a flag from the watchtower. Lune is aiming a bow through the watchtower gap. I just need to throw stones in Lune's line of fire.
The angle is a bit lower than 60 degrees to easily clear the extended fence, just barely grazing the fence.
Maintain the power of putting my whole body weight.
Almost no need to worry about wind influence.
"Let's see you jump!!"
I run on the thick plank placed on the gargoyle bust lever. So the stone can fly far by pulling the seesaw back as much as possible, the orcs moved the gargoyle bust corresponding to the fulcrum far away.
"Long live Archimedes!!"
I jump high into the sky the moment I cross the fulcrum. Like getting a running start, I step both feet forward and land like a gymnast on the end of the seesaw.
Whooom!!
A stone the size of a human torso flies beyond the fence again. And as soon as it crosses, Lune fires wind arrows indiscriminately toward the boulder.
Crack crack crack!
The sound of the boulder splitting into dozens of pieces in midair reaches here. If they dodge the boulder, how about rain of stone fragments?
"Did we kill them?!!"
The orc waves the flag to signal it hit. But the signal that they killed doesn't follow.
"Well, if it ended with just this much, it would've ended already."
It's disappointing, but if the battle ended with just throwing boulders twice, it would be too regrettable after I minimized sleep and strengthened monsters for the past three days.
"All forces, prepare for battle!"
At my shout, all named-class subordinates quickly scatter to their respective positions. After confirming from the air that the enemy subjugation force is coming in almost the same numbers as the 1st—no, more, I blocked the dungeon entrance and mobilized almost all forces.
Even by simple calculation, the force ratio is about three times.
That's right. Three times even against 1,200.
Currently, the Legion of Wrath's force count is roughly 450.
"We stuffed numbers in to even exceed capacity for a bit, but yeah, this much is necessary."
Excluding harpies in charge of food production at the chicken coop, the Legion of Wrath achieved considerable quantitative strengthening.
The number of orcs in charge of defense is 150.
The number of aerial forces, Harpy Angels, is 100.
And including monsters like ghouls and slimes, plus humans, about 50.
Up to here is a total of 300. Harpies in charge of supplies in the rear aren't counted as combat forces. Accordingly, the remaining empty forces are a full 150.
"Are you ready to fight, you little Rases?!!"
"Ras!!"
Bird-brained monsters wearing leather armor are waiting for my instructions in the square.
"You guys are the stars of today's battle! You must show with your own eyes why this city is Ras Vegas!!"
"Ras—!!"
A resonant battle cry echoes through Ras Vegas's sky.
150 guerrilla troops, adult Andras. Below, they're wearing clothes humans wear, and all hold wooden spears carved from wood.
Close-combat infantry, orcs.
Spearmen, Andras.
Aerial forces, Harpy Angels.
While broadly assigning roles by race, I load the third gargoyle bust onto the launcher. The seesaw used before broke quickly, and I place the bust used as its fulcrum beside me for the next catapult.
And long-range siege weapon, me.
"Just try letting forces get close."
I'll drop gargoyles on the soldiers. I eagerly await the enemy commander quickly moving forces.
...The reason Andras suddenly increased so much is none other than fifteen newly born male Andras being squeezed by harpies to produce results.
Fortunately, thanks to Meri's wonderful ejaculation management, graves didn't increase.
***
The subjugation force built a camp beyond the bridge. The fortified Zabiyaba looks tougher than expected, and though she doesn't know the method, stones thrown from inside the wooden fence are reminiscent of siege weapons.
Having almost been severely hit once, the Baroness built a camp then formed scouts to look around all of Zabiyaba. Fortunately, the enemy only defends and doesn't come out to intercept, rather mocking the scouts as if to say look all you want.
Uruk-hai!!!
Though she doesn't know what it means, the majority reaction was that the scouts were quite offended. However, thanks to their anger, considerable information was gathered. At the central table of the tent where five knights, the priest, and the Baroness gathered, a map of Zabiyaba is spread.
"I'll devise strategy assuming we recapture Zabiyaba."
Though the Baroness herself holds the baton, Gray has much higher tactical insight. Accordingly, the overall framework of the recapture operation and drafting detailed operations is Gray's job.
"According to confirmation through scouts, the enemy completely eliminated the gate. In front of the main gate, a moat was created that cavalry must charge at full speed to ford, and trenches are also installed in the river west of Zabiyaba."
"If we go head-on there will definitely be traps, and if we ford the river, enemies are waiting."
The Baroness elaborates on Gray's explanation according to her tactical insight. Though her body is weak, her head works well, so military science learned as liberal arts at the academy helps somewhat.
"Yes. So now we have two choices. One is to surround Zabiyaba and make them die of thirst. Building siege weapons and shooting inside from afar is the first method, but...."
Gray immediately changes his words seeing the displeased expressions of the Baroness and barony knights. Though it's a choice Gray can make not being born and raised in the barony, it's an absolutely unacceptable choice for those who settled in the barony.
"We came to recapture our city, not to smash the Demon King's Army's fortress. Frankly, if we wanted sabotage, we could just call a mage and set fire outside."
"...Hmm."
Priest Francis, who'd been quiet, strokes his chin with his hand. Something seems to bother him, and Gray shows respect and asks his opinion.
"Priest, does something come to mind?"
"I thought about the enemy occupying the city considering our position. If we think of Zabiyaba not as the enemy's main base but an advance base, the enemy's main base is ultimately the dungeon."
If Knight Gray expressed opinions according to tactical insight, Priest Francis states his opinion with an adventurer's perspective.
"We haven't discovered the dungeon's location yet. But there were no traces connecting Zabiyaba to the dungeon. Then this usually means there's a high-level mage connecting Zabiyaba and the dungeon, or there's a passage directly connecting near the dungeon."
Francis's view is almost close to the truth.
"Their forces might have increased far more than before."
"...This is maddening. Sir Gray, isn't there a good attack route?"
"There is. However."
Gray points to one spot.
"...It's only effective if we do a night raid."
***
Night fell.
I closely watch the enemies' movements with my eyes from the northern watchtower. The camp with torches lit up has no particular movement, and that makes me more anxious.
"What if those guys make siege weapons, make battering rams, or dig underground, or drop meteors from the sky?"
"Master, they're just humans. They're not dragons."
"You never know. A dragon transformed into a human might go 'ehehe I'm so stroooong' and slam down meteors. One city like this wouldn't be much, right?"
"...I think you worry too much. If something like that really happened, we'd all already be dead."
Lune and Eila try to reassure me, but I can't help feeling anxious and on edge. As someone always walking on thin ice, facing unknown enemies is always frightening.
"Whew, right. I shouldn't worry. Sorry."
If I'm anxious, other soldiers get anxious too. Commanders are people who must hold firm centers and give orders, never beings who get swayed here and there by situations.
"...The operation?"
"Proceeding well without problems. It'll be complete past midnight."
There's still time until midnight. Though we squabbled a few times near the fence from afternoon to evening, it's no different from bickering with almost no damage to each other.
"Next time I need to plant spies in the enemy camp."
"Have a good method?"
"Various methods. Infiltrate human subordinates like Meri to extract information, or scout with guys good at hiding at night like beastmen or vampires."
If we have force diversity, we could devise various operations based on that. Though the quantity and quality of subordinates definitely increased to equip ranks 56 and 63 dungeons, the lack of species diversity is too regrettable.
"Lune, Eila. After this battle ends, I'm doing gacha."
Thanks to daily quests done occasionally, monster summoning scrolls—tickets for gacha—easily exceed 20. Like having meals with Lune and Eila, I didn't skip daily quests and sub-dungeon clears even one day, accumulating them preciously in the dungeon's storage.
"Master, if a high-grade girl appears again this time, will you do that again?"
"Of course. ...Ahem, obviously."
"Then won't our portions keep decreasing?"
"If such a being appears from gacha. I'm an orc with preferences too. I'm not the kind of guy who just pounds any hole."
"You'll at least get a taste first though."
"That's natural."
Even at a buffet, you should taste delicious food at least once to get your money's worth.
"Legion Commander."
Arthur's voice is heard from below the watchtower. I quickly turn the hands that were fiddling with Lune and Eila and turn my head below the watchtower.
"What's the matter?"
"All preparations to execute the operation are complete."
"Yeah? Heh heh heh. Then let's start. Originally, pranks like this taste best at night. Andras!"
"Yes, Master."
Andras waiting on the roof raises her head. Simultaneously, numerous Harpy Angels behind Andras grin while holding glass bottles. The glass bottles are full of red mucus, and stoppers block the openings so it can't escape.
"Everyone knows how to use them well, right?"
"Of course. Fly, drop. Hehehe."
Items made easy enough even for Andras species to use. Though I specifically warned about things flying and falling using catapults, unfortunately the enemies seem not to have noticed at all.
"Then I'm counting on you. All Andras troops, prepare for flight!!"
I raise the flag forward. Except for white wings, the Harpy Angels' entire bodies are dyed black. Dark operative clothes made by attaching black feathers to human t-shirts and pants.
Whoosh—
Weak wind starts fluttering. After confirming the wind direction is south, I raise the flag high into the sky.
"Take flight!"
Harpy Angels fly high into the sky while holding glass bottles. Small wooden barrels also hang at their waists, firmly tied with strings.
Flap flap flap.
Harpy Angels who flew into the sky following Andras rose to considerably high altitude. If they don't notice the stars twinkling in the night sky disappearing covered by Harpy Angels, they'll never notice the Harpy Angels air raiding.
"Heh heh, Baroness Virgo."
I open the stopper of a water bottle glass bottle. While soft slime mucus fills it, a very faint but savory oil smell wafts up from inside the glass bottle.
"If presents fall from the sky, she'll be so pleased she could die. What will she do?"
I sent our dungeon's specialty as a gift.
