Alaric stopped and listened. Then the sound came again, as though metal was scraping against metal.
The sound was everywhere as it gradually got louder, and the echo filled the quiet ruins.
Alaric couldn't locate its specific direction with the wind spreading the sound everywhere.
"Wait, something is under..." Alaric started to say when the ground a few meters from him burst upward as a scorpion appeared, sand and dust spraying everywhere.
So the daddy came, Alaric thought to himself as he looked at the scorpion that was also observing them.
"The boss found us," Alaric muttered softly.
It was as large as a minivan, its carapace black and shiny in the burning sun. But the worst part was its stinger, you could literally see the venom dripping onto the ground, burning, smoke rising from it.
Alaric could already imagine how it would feel on human skin.
Then one of the guild members shot their power at it.
Stupid, Alaric thought as the member directly attracted the scorpion's aggro onto himself.
It hissed and ran toward him, its pointed legs leaving holes in the ground, with its stinger raised high in the air, ready to strike.
Everyone scattered around as they threw their powers at its body. Despite all their efforts, the exoskeleton only got a small crack from all the strikes.
Alaric could see how uncoordinated they were; everyone was panicking, and he wondered how they were from a leading guild.
But despite all their struggling against the scorpion, they were all unsurprisingly not injured. They were probably trained but not well on coordinating.
He had decided to stand back, but from the looks of it, they were going to get sunburned before they could finish.
"Shield guy, draw its attention!" Alaric shouted to the confused group.
The guy stopped running, as though he had been waiting for an instruction, and charged toward the scorpion, making loud noises.
The scorpion turned to him and ran toward him. He came to a stop with the huge shield and planted it on the ground.
The scorpion's claws came down in rapid succession, causing him to slide back until he flew backward, his shield half broken.
"Fire to the left!" he shouted again as the scorpion got distracted.
The braver ones stopped and fired, striking the scorpion square on its many eyes, but the scorpion only shook its head as though it was annoyed.
Alaric knew it wasn't going to work if they fought alone. It was just taking too long. And they were already starting to look exhausted.
"Give me an opening!" he shouted to the fighting guild members as he ran toward the scorpion, whip ready for attack.
"Here!" a wind user shouted as she blasted the scorpion, causing it to falter, its huge claws spreading wide open.
Alaric shot his whip and wrapped it around the joint of the left claw.
The scorpion thrashed, trying to pull Alaric with it, but Alaric planted his feet into the sand, finding ground on a small protruding rock.
He pulled hard, and the scorpion stumbled toward him, but before he could do anything, he saw its stinger heading toward him.
He jumped away just in time for the stinger to hit the place he had been standing.
He flicked his whip and wrapped it around the rising stinger and pulled. The stinger tore right off the scorpion's body, spraying its venom in an arc in the air.
Everyone stepped back as the scorpion went mad after that, hitting stones, sand, and anything that stood in its way.
Alaric looked at the thrashing scorpion and struck at its wound, breaking a part of its carapace off. He struck again at the vulnerable carapace, and half of it fell off, blood and poison spraying everywhere.
He ran and jumped on its back, striking down at the exposed flesh. The whip went right in, cutting the scorpion in half.
The scorpion flattered a little before it fell down with a huge thud and then silence.
The only sound was the venom sizzling on the sand and stones.
Alaric jumped off the scorpion, then hit it with the whip again, breaking it into two.
A small dungeon core rose from its body in front of everyone.
Alaric didn't wait for anyone to respond he picked the dungeon core and put it in his pocket. He then searched through the brain and took the skill card and awakener stones before turning and walking toward Kisha.
No one tried to fight him for the spoils. They all just wanted to leave the dungeon, and he had the key to it.
Alaric crushed the core, and the white portal appeared.
( Reward:+20 control,+12 reputation,one skill upgrade)
Behind them, the dungeon started to collapse.
Alaric took one last glance at the scorpion and stepped into the portal, his arms around Kisha's waist.
The moment they stepped out of the portal, the others turned to Alaric.
"Which guild are you from?"
"You are really good for an E-class."
"Do you want to join our guild?"
Alaric just ignored them and walked toward the registration for clearance. He just wanted to go home and take a deep bath before he started his day.
When he tried to leave, Jenna stepped in front of him.
Alaric tried to bypass her from the side, but she moved to block him again.
"What do you want?" he asked, getting irritated.
"This was supposed to be a test for them. You took it over," she hissed, her eyes angry.
Alaric rolled his eyes, getting amused.
"What, now the dungeon hunts are becoming personal? You shouldn't have allowed an outsider in," he mocked her.
She was probably just pissy since she might not have a lot to report.
Alaric saw her clench her fists, but he knew she wouldn't attack since that would be an offense.
"Do you want to join my guild?" she said suddenly. "They offer the best benefits among most guilds."
Alaric was surprised by her sudden change in attitude.
"No, I'm okay with being guildless," he said.
She looked at him in surprise, she probably couldn't fathom how he could even reject his offer.
"I'll make sure you join, just you wait," she said, determined, before going back to her group.
Alaric looked at her and sighed. Maybe this was why the old man sent him here, but he wasn't about to fall under a guild's rules. He wouldn't really have free time to do anything.
Maybe he could even establish his own guild one day.
"Let's go," he said to Kisha and took her arm, pulling her toward the parking lot.
The parking lot was quite a long way, and since they had been the last to arrive, they only managed to get a small corner spot. He just hoped they wouldn't be closed off by another car.
He looked around the street. The place was clean and organized. There were a lot of people since it was a university street. The students were probably out for lunch.
Alaric could see faint traces of mana from them and the surrounding areas.
"Do you go to school here?" he asked Kisha suddenly, since she looked young.
"Nope, I got expelled after blasting off a school building," she said the most unhinged, nonchalantly.
Alaric stopped.
"Are you serious?" he asked. It was just unbelievable. Going to university was almost everyone's dream. He would go, but he'd already been through that phase on Earth.
"Yap. It was around the time my cousin got cheated on. I wanted to kill her boyfriend, mentor there part time."
Alaric swallowed. That was a little too much, but he also understood her point of view. Jen is a sweetheart.
"He deserved it," Alaric agreed.
"I know. I don't really regret it since I can get the same amount of training at the guild, so it's no biggie."
After that, they walked in silence for a while until they arrived at the entrance of the parking lot.
They arrived in front of her car to find it blocked. He had expected this, but having it happen to them was definitely a mood dampener.
"What now?" Alaric said, leaning against the car.
Kisha shrugged her shoulders and got into the driver's seat. She then reached to the latch between the windshield and pushed it up. The roof slowly came up and covered the car.
Alaric bent down and looked at her through the window.
"Don't tell me you plan to ram through the other one?"
He knew she would definitely do it.
Kisha laughed out loud. "No, silly this is my favorite car, come here."
Kisha moved to the window and held his chin, pulling him to her for a kiss.
He separated from her and walked around to his side and got into the car. He pulled her to his lap and continued kissing her, his hands going under her skirt and massaging her ass.
"Alaric, I knew it was you."
Alaric turned and looked at the people standing outside the car in surprise.
Ooh shit. This is awkward.
