Adam awoke to the soft grey light of dawn filtering through the high, narrow windows of the receiving chamber. He was still on the plush sofa, his body stiff from the unorthodox sleeping position. More notably, Lilith was nestled against his side, her head resting on his shoulder, one arm draped possessively across his chest. She was deeply asleep, her usual sharp expression softened into something surprisingly peaceful.
'Thank goodness I was so exhausted last night I didn't even think about the whole… sleeping between them situation,' Adam thought, a wave of awkwardness warring with a strange sense of comfort. 'And Lilith… she looks oddly content. She must have been holding onto me all night.'
A soft snore drew his attention to the large, ornate rug in the center of the room. Ignis was sprawled there like a starfish, having migrated from the ottoman at some point in the night. She was hugging a decorative velvet cushion, a thin line of drool connecting her mouth to the expensive fabric. Her draconic regeneration had done its work; the last signs of her injuries were gone, replaced by the profound, innocent sleep of the utterly spent.
The sound of the main door opening gently broke the quiet. Elise entered, followed closely by a weary-looking but alert Seraphina. Both women looked like they had not slept a wink, their clothes still the ones from the battle, though they had been cleaned and mended. Dark circles shadowed Elise's eyes, but her posture was regal and composed.
Elise's gaze swept over the scene—Adam trapped under a sleeping Lilith, Ignis drooling on the Duke's finery—and a faint, genuine smile touched her lips. "I see you all managed to rest somewhat comfortably," she said, her voice quiet but clear. "That is a relief."
Adam carefully extricated himself from Lilith's grasp, sitting up. She stirred slightly, a faint frown appearing before she settled back into sleep, her hand now resting where his chest had been. "We had to," Adam replied, rubbing the back of his neck. "After yesterday, it was either sleep or fall over."
Elise nodded, her expression turning serious. She moved to sit in a chair opposite the sofa, Seraphina taking a vigilant position behind her. "Duke Arkwright and I have... reached an understanding," she began, folding her hands in her lap. "He is convinced of the immediate threat posed by the Lich's agents, and he acknowledges the diplomatic incident that would occur if I were harmed in his territory."
Adam waited, sensing the 'but'.
"However," Elise continued, the word hanging in the air, "there is a complication. The Duke will not simply let us proceed to Red Hollow Pass unescorted, nor will he ignore the... irregularities of your group. His condition for providing us safe passage and turning a blind eye to last night's events is that we undertake a task for him. A task within his own borders, to prove our 'good faith' and capability."
She met Adam's eyes directly. "He wants us to resolve a problem for him. A persistent, dangerous problem that his own forces have been unable to quell. It's in the Howling Crags, a day's travel northeast. If we succeed, we earn his official, if discreet, blessing to continue our journey. If we refuse, or fail..." She left the threat unspoken, but it was clear: they would be back to being prisoners, or worse.
Lilith's eyes fluttered open, having apparently been listening while seeming asleep. She didn't move from her reclined position, but her voice was clear and analytical. "A test of utility. And a convenient way for him to dispose of a thorn in his side using disposable assets. How... pragmatic of him."
Adam looked from Elise's tired resolve to Seraphina's grim acceptance. He let out a long breath.
"What," he asked, his voice flat, "is this 'problem' in the Howling Crags?"
Elise leaned forward slightly, her fingers lacing together. "The Howling Crags," she began, her tone taking on the cadence of a royal briefing. "It's a series of deep, jagged ravines and wind-scoured plateaus to the northeast. For generations, it's been a source of valuable iron ore and rare stones. However, three months ago, something changed."
Seraphina picked up the explanation, her voice gravelly with fatigue. "The winds, which have always been fierce, became... intelligent. Malicious. They now form into concentrated vortices that actively hunt living things. They strip flesh from bone, shred armor, and have been known to fling seasoned climbers and soldiers from the cliffs with pinpoint accuracy. The Duke's mining operations have completely halted. Scout parties sent to investigate either never return, or come back mad, babbling about 'voices on the wind'."
"The local folk and the Duke's scholars believe it to be the work of a nascent Wind Elemental Sovereign," Elise continued. "An entity of pure air and malice, born from the confluence of the crags' unique magical leylines and perhaps... stirred to wakefulness by some external event. It has claimed the entire region as its domain. The Duke's battle-mages are suited for siege warfare and demon-slaying, not for hunting a diffuse, intelligent force of nature in its own treacherous territory. He's lost too many men."
Lilith had now sat up fully, her crimson eyes sharp with interest. "An elemental sovereign. A being of pure environmental consciousness. Not a beast to be out-fought, but a phenomenon to be out-thought or placated. A fascinating puzzle."
Adam processed the information. A wind monster. Not something he could simply punch or burn. "And he wants us to do what? Talk to it? Kill it? Make it go away?"
"The mandate is to 'resolve the threat'," Elise said, quoting the Duke. "How is left to our discretion. Pacify it, disperse it, bind it, or destroy it. He doesn't care, so long as the Howling Crags are safe for his people and his operations again. Success means signed travel papers, fresh supplies, and his personal guarantee of non-interference up to the border of the Red Hollow Pass. Failure..." She glanced at the sleeping Ignis. "Means we are on our own, with the Duke's disfavor and likely warrants for our arrest following us."
Just then, Ignis snorted awake, sitting bolt upright. She blinked, looking around, a line of drool still on her chin. "Huh? What'd I miss? Are we fighting something?" Her gaze landed on the empty platters from last night. "Is there more food?"
Adam stood up, cracking his neck. The path was clear, if dangerous. A direct fight with the Duke's forces here and now would be catastrophic. This task was a leash, but it was a leash that led forward.
"Alright," Adam said, his decision made. "We'll go to the Howling Crags. We'll deal with this wind spirit."
He looked back at Elise. "Tell the Duke we accept his terms. But we leave today. The sooner we fix his problem, the sooner we get what we need."
Elise nodded, a flicker of relief in her eyes. Seraphina let out a breath she seemed to have been holding.
Adam studied Elise's pale face, the dark smudges under her eyes more pronounced in the morning light. "Elise, you need to rest. You look like you're about to keel over."
Seraphina stepped forward, her voice firm with protective insistence. "She cannot rest apart from you, Adam. The curse... its suppression is tied to your proximity after what the Lich revealed. We cannot risk a repeat of last night's weakening." There was a slight edge to her words, a subtle but clear note of blame for the earlier separation.
Adam didn't argue. He gave a slow, acknowledging nod. "Hmm. You're right."
Elise offered a tired but reassuring smile. "It's alright. I can sleep on the journey. A few hours in a carriage or saddle will have to suffice."
Lilith, now fully alert and smoothing her robes, interjected with practical curiosity. "How distant are these Howling Crags? A day's travel was mentioned, but by what measure? Foot, horse, or... other means?"
Seraphina answered, her brow furrowed in thought. "By horse, on good roads, it would be a full day's hard ride. But the terrain near the crags is treacherous; the final approach must be on foot." Then her eyes widened slightly. "Our horses! They're still stabled at The Traveler's Rest!"
Adam waved a dismissive hand, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Going back for them, dealing with the innkeeper and the Duke's watch... that would take too long. We'll use another method."
Both Elise and Seraphina tilted their heads in identical expressions of confusion. "Another method?" Elise asked. "We have no other mounts."
Adam's grin widened as his gaze shifted across the room to where Ignis was now sitting up, rubbing her eyes and yawning loudly, still clutching the drool-stained cushion. "Oh, I think we do."
He walked over and nudged Ignis with his hand. "Hey. Naptime's over. We've got a job."
Ignis blinked sleepily. "Job? Food job?"
"Travel job," Adam said. "We need to get to the Howling Crags, fast."
Ignis's drowsy expression cleared, replaced by dawning comprehension and then a spark of excitement. "Oh! You mean... I get to carry everyone?" She scrambled to her feet, suddenly looking very awake. "I've never carried four people before! Well, three and a half if Sera is light! This'll be fun!"
Elise and Seraphina stared, first at Ignis's enthusiastic bouncing, then at Adam's confident expression. The pieces clicked into place with almost audible snaps in their minds.
"Y-You cannot mean..." Seraphina began, her knightly composure cracking.
Elise's eyes were wide. "Ignis... you can... change? Into a form capable of carrying us all?"
Ignis puffed out her chest, her humanoid form suddenly seeming to radiate a warmer, larger presence. "You bet! I'm a Blazeheart Dragon!" She frowned for a second, thinking. "I might be a bit... snug. But we'll manage! It'll be faster than stinky horses!"
Adam nodded, his plan laid bare. "We fly. Straight to the Crags. Avoid the roads, avoid the Duke's patrols, and cut the travel time to a few hours at most. Elise, you can sleep while we fly. Seraphina, you'll just have to hold on tight."
