However, just because he had made up his mind didn't mean that things would become simple for him.
This was something Yi Chen had realised in the following three days as their wagon was nearing the Ming city. During the last three days, they had zero contact with any bandits along the way.
It was only now that it was coming to his mind that being attacked by a group of bandits was a rarity and not the norm.
'Of course…if the attacks were so rampant, then the kingdom officials would have no choice but to start a manhunt for all the bandits.' Yi Chen thought to himself.
At the same time, he didn't know whether to call himself lucky or unfortunate for being attacked by them during the first leg of his journey.
Seeing the city walls approaching closer and closer, Yi Chen's brows developed a furrow.
'At this rate, I don't think I'll be able to meet the required number of EXP in the given time…' he thought to himself.
If he depended on just the bandits, then the only way he would be able to complete the mission would be if he got attacked by a large group at once or continuous batches of them while travelling in the next one and a half months.
'No! That would be too risky a move,' Yi Chen thought and discarded this idea. With the huge failure penalty in mind, betting everything on luck was not something he would resort to.
The wagon soon entered the city gates and was currently moving through the market street towards the wagon depot.
"Thief! Thief!"
All of a sudden, everyone's attention, including that of Yi Chen, was attracted by the cries of a fruit seller who was running after a shoplifter.
Seeing this scene, his brows suddenly shot up in realisation.
'Wait…why should I limit myself to bandits? There must be many other criminals roaming around this huge city as well.'
His eyes beamed with joy at this thought as he began formulating a plan in his mind.
Soon, the wagon stopped at the depot, and everyone deboarded one after another. While the other passengers were busy admiring the new view in front of them, Yi Chen approached the wagon driver. It was time to get some intel.
"Brother, this is my first time visiting Ming City, and I don't want anything bad to happen to me. You know how unsafe new places can be for people, right?
So, can you tell me the places here which are very prone to crime? I'll make sure to stay as far away from them as possible."
The wagon driver was in a good mood and answered all the questions which Yi Chen had in his mind.
Satisfied with the answers, gave the driver a tip of ten bronze notes and went his way.
His first destination was a good quality inn nearby, where he freshened up and changed back again into the old set of robes.
'They'll get dirty later anyway, so I'll discard them at that time,'
After that, he ate lunch and slept comfortably for two hours before waking up.
By now, evening was approaching.
Seeing this, along with his backpack and everything, he left the inn and moved towards a particular direction.
Soon, he entered a street which was overflowing with the dirty stench of piss. Almost everyone around was wearing shabby robes, their faces looked despondent, and their countenance looked angry.
Drunk men were numerous and were wobbling around here and there. Drinking was the only respite they could get from their wrenched lives.
Yi Chen turned to his side and saw a man being ganged up on inside a dim alley while being hurled with a series of abuses.
Yi Chen ignored all this and kept walking towards a particular building in front of his eyes.
It was one of the cheapest Inns in the city.
The moment Yi Chen opened the cranky door, he saw a large group of drunk men seated towards the side and enjoying themselves.
They too glanced towards him with curiosity in their eyes, especially because of how neatly he was dressed compared to everyone.
Yi Chen ignored all their gazes and approached a man behind the counter. He was a bald old man with a patch on his right eye.
"What do you want, you punk?" he asked crassly when he looked at Yi Chen.
Seeing Yi Chen's clothes, he didn't think that he would want to live in such a place.
"I would like to book a room for a night," he stated
"Oh?!" The man's eyes brightened when he heard this and asked, "So it's a guest, what kind of room would you prefer, sir?"
The bald man asked with the best expression possible. It was as if the earlier rude remark never happened.
Although he was confused as to why Yi Chen would want to live in such a shabby place, how could he say no to making money?
Hearing this question, Yi Chen responded confidently with his chin pointing a little higher than usual.
"Give me the best room that you have and also send the best dishes you have to my room an hour later for dinner,"
His blunt words naturally drew a lot of attention from the other customers. They were eyes filled with curiosity and also hidden intentions.
It was the same with the bald man as he thought to himself, 'It's not every day I get a fat sheep like this, so I'll make sure to juice everything out of him.'
He thought with a grin.
"As luck would have it, our best room is empty right now, sir. For a night, it will cost you 250 bronze notes, sir…" The bald man tried out his luck.
"250 bronze notes?... Sure!" Yi Chen accepted without even trying to haggle and reached towards the pouch in his waist.
He was just opening its knot to give out the notes when-
THUD!
The pouch he was holding accidentally fell on the ground. At least that's what it looked like to the spectators, an accident.
The very next moment, the contents inside the pouch became visible to everyone present.
Two gold notes, three silver notes and a lot of bronze notes as well.
