Ayame Shinomiya sat in her small apartment with three monitors glowing in the darkness as she reviewed the footage from today's incident for the fifth time.
The apartment was spartan: a single futon in the corner, a small kitchenette she rarely used, and her command center: state-of-the-art surveillance equipment worth more than most people's cars.
On the wall hung a single photograph: a younger Ayame standing stiffly beside a tall man in formal robes bearing the silver hand insignia of the Order.
Her father. Grand Exorcist Takeshi Shinomiya.
She glanced at the photo briefly, then back to her screens. She'd left home at fifteen to join the Order, driven by a need to prove herself outside her father's considerable shadow.
When this assignment came down to investigate supernatural incidents at a Tokyo high school, she'd refused the dossier he'd prepared on Akira Kanzaki.
"I don't need your research," she'd told him coldly. "I'll build my own profile."
"Pride comes before the fall, daughter," he'd warned. "The demon you're hunting may not be what you expect."
"Then I'll adapt. That's what you taught me, isn't it?"
Now, watching the café footage again, she wondered if she should have listened.
The video showed the slime demon's attack in crystal clarity. Her equipment had captured everything: the creature emerging from the sewers, the panicked civilians, and the three teenagers at the center of it all.
She isolated the moment Rina Kurogane entered the scene.
"Computer, analyze subject two. Energy signature analysis."
The screen flickered, overlaying the video with thermal and spiritual imaging. Rina's form blazed with violet energy: newly awakened, unstable, but undeniably powerful.
[SPIRITUAL ANALYSIS: SUBJECT RINA KUROGANE]
[ENERGY TYPE: DEMONIC - LUST VARIANT]
[POWER LEVEL: GRADE C (UNSTABLE)]
[AWAKENING: RECENT - ESTIMATED TIME UNAVAILABLE]
[COMBAT CAPABILITY: ENHANCED STRENGTH, SPEED, REFLEXES]
[THREAT ASSESSMENT: MODERATE TO HIGH]
Ayame leaned forward, studying every frame. Rina moved with inhuman grace, dodging the slime's attacks, swinging that chair with enough force to dent the creature's core. This was not adrenaline… This was supernatural power.
"Computer, isolate subject one. Akira Kanzaki."
The analysis shifted to Akira. He appeared on screen, stumbling forward with a chopstick, looking terrified and desperate as he somehow managed to pierce the demon's core.
[SPIRITUAL ANALYSIS: SUBJECT AKIRA KANZAKI]
[ENERGY TYPE: NONE DETECTED]
[POWER LEVEL: BASELINE HUMAN]
[AWAKENING: NO SIGNS OF SUPERNATURAL ENHANCEMENT]
[COMBAT CAPABILITY: AVERAGE MALE TEENAGER]
[THREAT ASSESSMENT: MINIMAL]
Ayame frowned, running the footage back again. She watched Akira's movement frame by frame. The angle of the chopstick, the way it penetrated the slime's defenses, hitting the core with impossible precision...
"Luck," she muttered. "Has to be luck."
But was it? She'd been hunting demons for six years, since she was twelve years old. She'd seen coincidences before… civilians who happened to survive encounters they shouldn't have. But this felt different.
Her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID: Father.
She let it ring twice more before answering. "Grand Exorcist."
"Ayame." His voice was formal and measured. "I've reviewed your preliminary reports. You believe you've located the source of corruption at Kawakami High School?"
"I'm still gathering data."
"The Council is concerned. Three supernatural incidents in two weeks, all centered around the same location. This suggests a powerful entity establishing a foothold."
"I'm aware."
"And your primary suspect?"
Ayame looked at the frozen frame of Rina on her screen… the violet eyes glowing, mid-leap, radiating demonic energy. "I have a working theory."
"Which is?"
"I believe we've been looking at this wrong. The male student, Akira Kanzaki… he's not the demon. He's the victim."
There was a pause. "Explain."
"The energy signatures don't match. Kanzaki shows no signs of demonic corruption despite being at the center of multiple incidents. But one of his classmates and housemates, Rina Kurogane, she recently underwent an awakening. Lust-type demon. Unstable but powerful."
"And you believe she's the source?"
"It fits the pattern. Newly awakened demons often lack control, creating incidents around them as they learn to manage their power. The slime demon today was drawn to a holy beacon I planted near Kanzaki, but it could have been attracted to Kurogane's energy signature instead."
"Circumstantial."
"Yes, but consider: Kanzaki has been photographed with multiple female students showing signs of unusual attachment. What if Kurogane is a succubus variant, using him as a thrall to gather more victims? She feeds on him, uses him as bait, expands her influence through the school."
Her father was quiet for a long moment. "It's plausible. Succubi are known to operate through proxies, especially in their early stages. They build harems, create dependency, feed on the resulting emotional and sexual energy."
"Exactly. And if I'm right, Kanzaki is in serious danger. The longer he's under her influence, the more difficult extraction will be."
"What's your next move?"
Ayame pulled up Rina's class schedule on another monitor. "Direct confrontation. If she is what I think she is, she won't be able to resist revealing herself when challenged."
"Ayame, that's…"
"I can handle a Grade C demon, Father. You trained me yourself."
"Pride, daughter. Remember what I said about pride."
"This isn't pride. It's my job." She stood, beginning to pack her equipment: holy water, purification talismans, her silver dagger blessed by the Council. "I'll file a full report after I've made contact."
"If you're wrong about the girl…"
"Then I'll apologize and redirect my investigation. But I'm not wrong. The energy signature doesn't lie."
She ended the call before he could argue further, slipping the dagger into a concealed sheath at her hip. The weapon had been a gift on her thirteenth birthday… her first solo exorcism. She'd killed a Grade D imp that had been possessing a businessman. Clean, efficient, textbook perfect.
Her father had nodded his approval. "You have the gift, Ayame. The ability to see through demonic deceptions. Never doubt your instincts."
She looked at her reflection in the darkened window. Black hair pulled back in a severe ponytail, dark eyes that had seen too much for her age, the silver hand pendant around her neck marking her as an agent of the Order.
"My instincts say Rina Kurogane is the demon," she said to her reflection. "And Akira Kanzaki is her victim."
She pulled up her surveillance data on her device, updating her assessment.
[SUSPICION METER UPDATE]
[AKIRA KANZAKI: 31% → 21%]
[REASON: Repeated observation shows no active demonic abilities. Behavior consistent with thrall under succubus influence. Possibly unaware of his situation.]
[RINA KUROGANE: 15% → 65%]
[REASON: Confirmed demonic energy signature. Recent awakening. Proximity to multiple incidents. Enhanced combat capabilities. Classic succubus behavioral pattern.]
[ASSESSMENT: Primary suspect status shifted from Kanzaki to Kurogane.]
[RECOMMENDATION: Direct confrontation to confirm identity and assess threat level.]
Ayame pulled up Rina's home address. Rosewood Residences, same building as Kanzaki. Of course. The succubus would want to stay close to her primary thrall.
She checked her equipment one final time. Holy water… check. Purification talismans… check. Silver dagger… check. Backup communication device linked directly to SPIU headquarters… check. Speed dial to an Order of the Silver Hand agent… check.
Everything was ready.
Her phone buzzed with a text from Agent Sato: "Any updates on the café incident?"
She wanted to reply, but then she didn't exactly want Sato to know what all she does. After all, she was only working with him to get direct access to updates and other resources.
Ayame tucked her phone away and grabbed her jacket as she headed for the door. It was nearly 8 PM… late enough that most students would be home, early enough that Kurogane should still be awake.
As she locked her apartment, her father's words echoed in her mind: "The demon you're hunting may not be what you expect."
"It's a succubus," she said aloud, as if speaking the words would make them more certain. "Newly awakened, unstable, dangerous. I've handled worse."
But had she?
