Claire looked at the two men in silence for a few moments.
'I came to recruit him. I didn't expect to become a witness to an attempted murder!' She cried inwardly. Had she known this would have happened, she wouldn't have come.
'Try to think of the positives. I would have to act as a witness. Maybe this could make him join our faction.' She thought.
"Is he alive?" Her finger pointed at Carlos's body.
"Not sure." Michael shrugged casually.
With a sigh, Claire contacted Victoria and Roy. Since these two were under different generals, both of them had to be informed.
Naturally, the two didn't waste any time going to the scene in mere minutes.
"Why are you still standing with the blade in you?" Once Victoria reached the scene, her eyes stopped at Michael's wound that was still bleeding.
Claire had wanted to help him, but he refused to let anyone touch the blade. They could tamper with the evidence, and he wasn't having any of that.
"We wouldn't want to tamper with the evidence now, would we?" Michael asked with a warm smile, almost like he was unbothered.
"Unbelievable." Victoria mumbled before approaching him and taking the fingerprints on the dagger's surface. Michael had made sure not to touch it. As a result, only Carlos's fingerprints were shown.
Only after the evidence was recorded did Michael allow for the blade to be taken out. Before more blood could come out, Victoria held the wound closed before injecting him with several healing syringes.
"That should patch you up." She said, observing how his face didn't display even a frown.
'It's like he doesn't feel pain.'
Of course, it wasn't that Michael didn't feel pain. It's just that he had experienced being betrayed in a similar manner many times, so something as simple as this didn't really faze him.
Roy, who had remained silent until now, looked at Carlos, who was still lying on the ground unconscious, quickly losing blood.
"So after disarming him, you asked him about the reason for his actions, yet he remained silent?" He asked.
Michael simply nodded.
"Sounds like he has received orders from somewhere and is refusing to say by whom…" Roy said, scratching his chin before taking Carlos's body.
"Since I still feel guilty about my behavior earlier, I promise to deal with the issue myself."
Not waiting for the others to retort, Roy headed out.
Once they were away from the tent, the man spoke.
"We get saved by their captain, and you try to repay that with an attempted assassination? I don't care what faction you are in. You aren't surviving this one." Roy snorted coldly. He had decided things would go smoother if he didn't use healing syringes on Carlos, letting him die of blood loss.
Meanwhile, in the tent, a petite woman burst in the second she heard what had happened.
"Ava, you don't have to—"
Before Michael could say anything, she pushed him on the bed and rolled up his shirt, showcasing his sculpted abs and the wound that had begun to close up.
"I hope the one that did this to you is dead!" Her eyes seemed ready to go for the kill.
"General Roy will handle it." He answered her.
Victoria and Claire, who had remained in the tent, felt their gazes drop down to his still revealed naked torso before averting their eyes.
"This might be my womanly intuition talking, but did you request to be taken to an isolated tent because you were expecting something like this to happen?" Victoria asked once she calmed down.
"It's better to weed out the cancer and get rid of it before it can infect any other areas." Michael said calmly.
'Does that mean he let himself willingly be injured just to have justification to punish Carlos?' Victoria didn't say her thoughts out loud.
"I really can't leave you alone even for a second. From now on, you are going to my tent to rest. I am not going to take my eyes off you!" Ava said before tugging at his arm.
Michael would have refused under normal circumstances but found himself too tired to care.
Claire, seeing how close Michael was with a member of his faction, guessed that recruiting him was a pipe dream.
'Grandpa was right… It seems I will have to pay special attention to this captain from now on.' Knowing that this wasn't her time to press for details, she left it for another time.
Due to the cooperation of the two generals, the incident was kept under wraps. If the story of a captain trying to assassinate another spread, it could cause chaos.
Claire promised not to reveal what happened today, even to her grandfather, which caused her ties with Victoria to strengthen.
Roy contacted the Immortal Legion once Carlos's breathing ceased completely. With the evidence that Michael had gathered, even the Immortal Legion couldn't openly go against them, especially since Carlos had been a simple captain.
It didn't take long for Oliver to get wind of the news. The fact that he had failed to bring an end to Michael again enraged him even more.
Once Michael reached Ava's tent, the woman froze, realizing that there was only one bed.
With the constant death looming over the battlefields, most of the soldiers were living in the moment. So most captains were provided with double beds should they wish to have a romantic partner for the night.
"Y—You must be very tired, so it's only natural that you take a rest on the bed. You don't have to worry. I—I can make some space for you…" Ava felt her cheeks blushing, but she pressed on regardless of the embarrassment. This was a rare chance she wasn't willing to miss!
Michael chuckled before patting her on the head.
"I don't want to take advantage of your hospitality. Not to mention I love to sleep on hard surfaces like the ground since it strengthens my back as a side effect."
The moment he said these words, he felt his soul going wild. Devil's Tongue was no doubt wanting to yell at him for torturing the poor woman with his teasing. But Michael didn't care. It was very hard for a person to fully enter his heart. Not to mention he was terribly exhausted.
The rest of the night passed relatively peacefully. Michael had the best sleep of his life, while Ava couldn't get a wink, her poor heart beating so fast like it was about to explode.
'He must be doing it on purpose!' She screamed internally yet couldn't deny that the more he teased her, the more she felt like she wanted him.
While most slept, the massive alien army, whose ambush had failed, didn't pursue the soldiers and decided to change their route under higher orders.
During all this, a bloody battlefield was still underway, with most of Triton's troops focused on bringing down the alien command ship that seemed to be spawning Elites endlessly.
Deep within said ship, an alien smaller than an Elite yet with a several times more profound aura sat calmly with his eyes closed.
"My lord."
He was awakened by the voice of his subordinate. Unknown to most, the smarter aliens were able to communicate in the human tongue. They just chose not to reveal that to the human race since their pride didn't allow them to.
Seeing that his lord had opened his eyes, the bowing alien continued to speak.
"It appears that the hidden troops we had been keeping as a trump card have been discovered. They won't be able to attack the rear of the ones keeping us in place."
"..."
The alien's leader remained silent for a few seconds.
"The way things are going, our demise will surely come… I will be joining the battlefield from now on."
