With Claire in the mix it was easy to guess who was going to get the most kills. She was not only of the Master realm, but she was also renowned for her mecha skills. No amount of talent could match up to that.
'Only losers make excuses for the lack of their tools!' Devil's Tongue remarked, secretly self-conscious that its owner was going to replace it. 'Not to mention that you have the best soul weapon there is. You don't need anything else!'
The soul weapon had misread the glance Michael was sending toward Claire's mecha. While he wasn't planning to ride one, at least until he reached the Master realm since it was going to be a hassle otherwise, he wondered how it would feel to use his new Bypasser technique.
In theory he should be able to take control over it on a whim even if there was a person inside.
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. My priority will be completing the quest as soon as possible." His murmur was drowned out by the sounds of battle.
With the assistance of Claire, the army of Higher tier aliens didn't stand a chance. A few hours was all it took for the alien army to perish.
"Claire is in the lead, and in second place is… Michael." Ava bit her lower lip in frustration. No one had counted the kills this time, but it was more than obvious.
"Hmm… I wonder what I should use my wish for." Michael stroked his chin, acting like he was contemplating something.
Ava didn't seem to complain. Quite the opposite, her heart was beating nonstop in anticipation.
'What would Michael wish me to do?' She gulped nervously, waiting for his next words.
"Do you mind if I hold on to my wish? I want to use it when it's more appropriate." He asked.
"No… I—It might even be better." Ava replied sheepishly. While inwardly wondering what he wanted from her.
'Does this mean he will tell it only when we are alone? In private?! What could he—' She stopped her train of thought before she could get distracted.
The squad didn't pause in their purge of remaining aliens on Triton. Along the way they met several other squads that had the same mission as them.
Even if they had split off from the main army of their base, they still trailed close. It would be incredibly rude to miss the funeral for the fallen soldiers. So they tended with great care.
A few days of nonstop fighting later, a window appeared before Michael, filling him with immense joy.
[Current slain forces: 20,000/20,000]
[Quest Slaughtering Machine: Completed!]
[Distributing Reward]
[Legendary cybernetic gained, 500 Skill Points gained]
A Legendary cybernetic, while not as rare as a Mythic one, was still a priceless treasure that many would give their lives just for a chance to acquire it.
"Let's see what it is." A smile appeared on Michael's face before inserting the neon chip.
[New technique comprehended: Parallel Sight]
[Rank: Legendary]
[Description: A passive ability that allows you to see the potential moves of your opponent. Works on only one target at a time]
Michael was immediately intrigued. The idea of seeing the potential moveset of his foes was invaluable.
'Even better, just like Bypasser, the technique doesn't have levels. So it's as strong as it can get from the very start. I won't need to waste time improving it like the others.' He mused.
Eager to test the technique in action, he called for Enzo.
"Do you mind if we spar?"
Overjoyed that his rival was calling him to a fight, Enzo got into a battle position before attacking.
Michael observed with great interest. Before Enzo attacked, several outlines appeared showcasing his potential moves. With the option of kicking or punching, Enzo chose the latter.
Preparing for the two actions in advance, Michael was able to effortlessly sweep Enzo off his feet, sending him to the ground.
"How did you do that? It's like you knew how I was going to move!" The man exclaimed.
"Experience." Michael answered calmly. While it was true that the cybernetic allowed him to see several parallel possibilities, it would have been useless if he didn't know how to counter the moves in a timely manner.
With the reward, the skill points in his reserve rose to 1,500. For now he abstained from using them. In the future he could feign powerlessness, only to surprise his foes a moment later. This wasn't a tactic he was saving for the alien encounters but for potential humans that would get on his bad side.
'When you are strong, appear weak. When you are weak, appear strong.' He recalled a quote from a book he read a long time ago.
"We have done enough. It's time to go back to the base."
No one argued with his suggestion. Even if they wanted to not think about it, many had died, and it was only right they pay their respects to the fallen.
Since they had trialed close, it took them only several hours to arrive at base #85.
Unsurprisingly, the mood was heavy, with some soldiers taking the loss harder than others.
Changing from his usual white attire, Michael wore a black suit and a tie.
"I hate these ceremonies. I have to make humanity stronger so that we stop experiencing tragedies such as this." He took a deep breath, calming himself down.
In the gathering area the personnel had gathered. Before them were thousands of coffins laid in orderly fashion. Each containing a body that had once brimmed with life.
These were the true heroes of war. Not the flashy celebrities but the ones that had given their lives so that their loved ones could live another day.
Upon Victoria's request, Michael, as well as every other captain in the base, appeared on the platform, ready to give their speech.
"Make sure you focus. Since we are the only reporters here, it's our duty to show the fallen heroes of war." Skylar reminded her partner.
"I know. You don't have to tell me." Luis mumbled, making sure to capture every detail.
