I Have a Dice Left by a God

Chapter 41: The Manhunt

At the Night Patrol base, when Kathy, the little rich lady of imagination, saw Li Xin, she was somewhat surprised, and Li Xin was equally surprised to see Kathy.

"Sister Kathy, you're actually working overtime?" Li Xin asked in astonishment.

Kathy widened her eyes, "What do you mean by actually, I'm very dedicated. Why are you here? Haven't you joined the Black Rose? No events on the weekend?"

"Sister Kathy knows her stuff, the event is over, and well, I missed everyone, so I sneaked over to take a look," Li Xin said with a mischievous smile.

"Such sweet talk, entirely different from your uncle," Kathy's slightly weary face brightened with a smile, "Come to think of it, I was your senior in the Black Rose, just graduated earlier."

Kathy also fondly remembered the days at the Canon Law School, all youthful times, back then genuinely carefree, full of beautiful fantasies about everything in life.

"Is the case troublesome?" Li Xin inquired.

Kathy nodded, "More complex than imagined. I told your idea to the team leaders, but the scope is too large; we simply don't have enough manpower."

"Have you revisited the scene to look for clues? I've heard that when a case hits a bottleneck, returning to the crime scene might yield results," Li Xin suggested.

Kathy looked at Li Xin with surprise, "Where are all these weird ideas coming from? They sound quite reasonable. All six of our teams have been deployed, along with peripheral personnel and the City Guard assisting, yet another victim appeared yesterday, and still no clue about the perpetrator."

"In the city?" Li Xin was stunned. If it was in the city, it wouldn't likely be this calm.

"In the Underground City," Kathy said with a bitter smile, "How do you find anything there?"

The case became even more challenging, with the Underground City being intricate, densely populated, and even harder to track.

"Find the gangs in the Underground City; if the culprit isn't caught, they won't have a good time either," Li Xin suggested.

"Luo the Boss was contacted, mobilizing all the gangs, but the effect is minimal. Those gangs only fear us, hoping to see us struggle; what do a few deaths matter to them? It's good enough if they don't drag us down," Kathy said.

The head butler even working overtime indicated true headache, with the matter pressing on the Night Patrol, attracting attention from the Council and the Church. No matter what, the case must be resolved by Luo Jin.

"Sister Kathy, where are the files? I'd like to take a look."

"Come, I'll take you there, but they're a bit messy." Kathy led the way in her little black leather shoes, although today the sound seemed somewhat dull.

The files had already piled up like a small mountain, under Luo Jin's management, even though each team had its own style which outsiders might not find pleasing, everyone took their work seriously, with a sense of pride. Even seasoned trainers like Old Mo had gone out, showing that this Inhaler had thoroughly angered the Night Patrol, who were determined to root it out.

The Night Patrol was under pressure from all sides; City Hall didn't care about the Inhaler or whatever, only knowing that for such a long time the Night Patrol hadn't found a monster, allowing it free reign, which was seen as incompetence. The criticism in city council meetings was quite harsh.

In contrast to the city's concern, the Underground City didn't take the Inhaler seriously. In the world below, monsters were as unappealing as the rats in the sewers; for the gangs, as long as the Inhaler didn't provoke them, they couldn't care less, a few deaths were nothing, they even hoped the Inhaler would take out their competitors to expand their territory.

As for the Night Patrol's task, they wouldn't be paid anyway, so they treated it as a fart to be ignored, just sending out a few hooligans to pretend to search, to make it look good.

Within the gangs, there was one distinct difference, and that was the Spade group in the Black Water Region.

Now, Qi Badao had become a big brother figure among the hundreds of gangs in the Underground City, a man to be reckoned with, renowned for killing the Licker, demanding respect wherever he went as "Brother Dao," and his reputation was significant.

With his territory expanded, Brother Dao's life became more comfortable, but he was a grateful person; he knew where his leg stood, though he'd heard that leg had entered the Canon Law School, the distance growing further, Qi Badao took good care of Li Xin's old house, never charging protection fees nearby even though Li Xin had left.

When the Night Patrol came looking, Qi Badao immediately agreed, promptly deploying his men to search for clues on the Inhaler.

"Brother Dao, the brothers have been running day and night for a week now. This... isn't it a bit much?" One of Qi Badao's subordinates couldn't help complaining, tiredness aside, they were even ridiculed by their peers.

The Night Patrol oversaw gang activities, not exactly at odds but certainly not cooperative either, and although the current leader, Luo Jin, was reasonable, the Night Patrol had often clashed with them in the past. Even so, things were relatively peaceful; in the Celestial Capital, the city was the Night Patrol's domain, and the Underground City for the gangs. Now, just a small minion from Night Patrol was stirring such turmoil in the Spades, which made the underlings uneasy.

"What do you know, I'm not doing this for the Night Patrol," Qi Badao thought of Li Xin, this was something Li Xin had specifically notified him to investigate.

What did it mean that Li Xin had moved from the Night Patrol to the Canon Law School?

Others might not realize it, but he could sense it; it meant that Li Xin and Luo Jin's relationship had definitely grown more reliable, Luo Jin also holding a position as the Grand Wind Discipline Officer of the Canon Law School was no secret, Li Xin's leap from Night Patrol to the Canon Law School showed deep waters, Li Xin and Luo Jin were certainly grasshoppers tied to the same line.

The leg was not only powerful, but its future was also growing brighter.

This Inhaler incident was quite a big deal, even reported by the Celestial Capital Daily. If Luo Jin fell, Li Xin wouldn't fare well either, as the Canon Law School was quite snobbish, which is why he dedicated himself to the investigation.

With no great skills, just his knack for reading people, in this world full of capable individuals, he knew his place. Encountering Li Xin was his fortune in this life, and he was determined to seize it. Rarely was there an opportunity to work for him, and he needed to show his worth.

"Everyone better perk up," Qi Badao yelled after his meal, "use all the available connections. Whoever finds a clue gets a prize of a thousand, no, five thousand beans!"

Upon hearing there was money, the subordinates perked up; after all, they were just looking for clues, not confronting anything. If they encountered the Inhaler, running would be their first response.

Qi Badao was quite shrewd, sensing that things were tense in the city, having heard that the Night Patrol, Knight Order, City Guard, and people from the Church Court had all been dispatched. The opponent's activity space was surely limited, hence it would come to the Underground City to hunt, and such a large fog capability required water indeed.

Water was plentiful in the Underground City, but mostly consisted of dirty and toxic Hex-Tech leftover waters, and since this fellow came from the city...

Clat~~~

Qi Badao's mind lit up, city people loved cleanliness, so if this person came from the city, they'd be clean-focused, so the action was most likely near clean water sources, and in the Underground City where dirty water was prevalent, clean water was scarce, generally found in residential areas. He had three points in his own territory.

Qi Badao licked his lips, ready to work, as opportunity favored the prepared.
