The Extra Who Will Swallow The Plot

Chapter 74: Apex Predator

The stairs descended through stone that seemed to pulse with ancient energy, the walls taking on texture that suggested they were moving through something organic rather than mineral. Temperature rose gradually as they progressed downward, the damp cold of the second floor giving way to dry heat that made breathing feel labored despite adequate air circulation.

Raze counted sixty-seven steps before the passage leveled out, opening into a corridor that was dramatically different from the previous floors. The bioluminescent fungi here grew in dense clusters that provided actual illumination rather than just dim glow, their light shifting through colors that ranged from deep purple to bright amber. The walls themselves seemed to breathe, subtle expansion and contraction that created unsettling impression of being inside something alive.

"This feels wrong," Mariabel said quietly, her hand moving to rest on the weapon at her hip. "The dungeon's nature is changing as we descend. It's becoming less like constructed space and more like actual living ecosystem."

"The deeper floors preserve creatures from progressively earlier eras," Raze explained, drawing on game knowledge he was careful to present as research rather than impossible foreknowledge. "Each level represents different period in the world's history, times when mana was more concentrated and life adapted accordingly. What we're experiencing is the dungeon's attempt to recreate those environmental conditions."

The corridor opened into the first chamber, revealing an environment that justified Mariabel's unease. Massive trees grew here despite being underground, their trunks thick as houses and branches spreading to create a canopy that blocked view of the ceiling. The trees themselves were wrong, bark covered in patterns that moved independent of wind or natural growth, leaves that tracked movement with disturbing awareness.

The floor was covered in undergrowth that seemed simultaneously plant and animal, vegetation that pulsed with rhythms suggesting heartbeats rather than photosynthesis. Strange flowers bloomed in patches, their petals opening and closing with mechanical precision that had nothing to do with day-night cycles.

Movement in the undergrowth caught Raze's attention, something low to the ground circling their position with predatory patience. Then another shape, and another, multiple forms coordinating their approach with pack intelligence that spoke to sophisticated hunting behavior.

The creatures emerged gradually from concealment, their bodies perfectly camouflaged until movement revealed them. Cat-like predators the size of large dogs, their fur patterns shifting to match surrounding environment with such precision that even knowing where to look didn't guarantee seeing them clearly. But their most distinctive features were the nerve-sensitive tail whips that extended from their hindquarters, appendages that moved independently with snake-like fluidity, and the sprawling claws on their paws that extended and retracted with audible clicks.

Spindralis. Six of them visible now, though Raze suspected more lurked in the strange forest environment surrounding the chamber. Their golden eyes tracked the intruders with intelligence that exceeded simple animal awareness, evaluating threat level while identifying optimal approach vectors.

Raze activated Inspect on the nearest creature.

[Spindralis]

Rank: Master (Peak)

Threat Level: Extreme in pack formations

Master Peak, matching the strongest regular creatures they'd faced on previous floors. But the environmental advantage these predators possessed in their adapted territory would make them considerably more dangerous than rank alone suggested. The camouflage capabilities combined with pack coordination meant attacks could come from any direction with minimal warning.

The Spindralis attacked without obvious signal, six forms launching simultaneously from different positions. Their approach was silent despite the speed, paws finding purchase on undergrowth without creating noise that would alert prey to incoming assault. The tail whips extended forward, seeking to entangle targets before claws and teeth could finish the kill.

Oziel's blade met three of them mid-leap, his enhanced perception allowing him to track their camouflaged forms despite the visual confusion. His sword moved through combinations that left silver afterimages, each strike precisely calculated to intercept creatures whose trajectories he'd predicted through combat experience rather than simple observation.

The lead Spindralis died before completing its leap, body bisected cleanly through the midsection. The second lost its head to a strike so fast its camouflage couldn't adjust before death. The third managed to twist mid-air, avoiding immediate decapitation, but Oziel's follow-up caught it as it landed, driving through its spine with force that severed the connection between brain and body.

Raze engaged two of the remaining three, his Combat Reflex screaming warnings as tail whips sought to wrap around his limbs before claws could reach him. He activated Scarlet Leap, body blurring sideways to avoid the entanglement attempt. Azure Edge came around in horizontal slash enhanced with maximum mana, the blade cutting through the extended tail of one Spindralis with edge that cauterized the wound through sheer heat.

The creature yowled in pain and rage, its pack coordination disrupted by sudden injury. But the second Spindralis capitalized on Raze's committed attack, leaping toward his exposed back with claws extended and jaws open.

He activated Instant Transmission without conscious thought, body blinking through space to appear five feet from his previous position. The attacking Spindralis passed through empty air where he'd been, landing off-balance when its expected target simply vanished.

Raze's blade found it while it was vulnerable, driving down through the back of its neck with strike that severed spine and major blood vessels simultaneously. The creature collapsed, dying before it could recover from the confusion of missing its prey.

The tail-wounded Spindralis retreated into the undergrowth, camouflage activating to render it nearly invisible against the bizarre vegetation. Raze tracked it through movement rather than sight, his enhanced perception allowing him to follow disturbances in the environment that betrayed hidden position.

But before he could pursue, Mariabel's voice cut through the combat.

"More incoming! At least a dozen, surrounding us from multiple directions!"

Raze spun to assess, finding she was correct. The initial six had been a probing attack, testing their capabilities while the main pack maneuvered into optimal positions. Now the real assault was beginning, multiple Spindralis emerging from concealment in coordinated strike designed to overwhelm through sheer numbers.

"Defensive formation," Raze commanded, recognizing they couldn't afford to be separated against this many opponents. "Triangle pattern, watch all approaches!"

They arranged themselves with backs toward each other, creating formation that allowed mutual support while preventing attacks from blind spots. The Spindralis circled just beyond weapon range, their pack intelligence recognizing that direct assault against prepared defenders would result in unacceptable casualties.

Then the tail whips struck.

The appendages extended from concealment like striking serpents, nerve-sensitive tips seeking to wrap around limbs and weapons to disable defenders before the main bodies committed to attack. Dozens of whips created forest of grasping tendrils that made defense nearly impossible through conventional blocking.

Mariabel's response was immediate and devastating. She conjured a sphere of fire around their formation, flames erupting in complete circle that extended fifteen feet in all directions. The tail whips recoiled from heat that promised severe damage, the sensitive nerve endings making them particularly vulnerable to burning.

Several Spindralis that had been preparing to charge through gaps in the whip assault found their approach blocked by fire that couldn't be easily bypassed. They pulled back, yowling frustration while seeking alternative vectors that would allow them to reach prey without crossing the flames.

But Mariabel's technique had limitation she'd recognized immediately. The fire sphere consumed mana at prodigious rate, her reserves depleting rapidly as she maintained the barrier. They had perhaps thirty seconds before she'd be forced to release it or risk complete exhaustion.

"I can't hold this much longer," she warned, sweat beading on her forehead from the strain. "When I drop the barrier, they'll rush us immediately."

"Understood," Oziel replied, his body coiling in preparation for explosive action. "Drop it on my mark. Raze, be ready to capitalize when they commit to the attack."

Mariabel maintained the sphere for another fifteen seconds, letting her reserves drop to twenty percent before Oziel gave the signal. She released the technique, flames dissipating to leave them exposed to the circling predators.

The Spindralis attacked as predicted, dozens of forms launching from multiple directions in coordinated assault that would overwhelm anything less than Grandmaster capability. Their camouflage created visual confusion that made tracking individual attackers nearly impossible, furry bodies seeming to materialize from empty air as they closed distance.

Oziel became a whirlwind of silver light, his blade moving through patterns that defied normal physics. Severance Authority manifested with intensity that warped space around his strikes, cutting force extending beyond physical blade to create death zone that nothing below Master Peak rank could survive. The Spindralis died in waves, bodies falling before they completed their leaps as Oziel demonstrated why Grandmaster cultivators were considered legendary rather than merely powerful.

Raze engaged the ones that slipped past Oziel's killing field, his enhanced capabilities allowing him to hold his own despite being outnumbered and outranked. Azure Edge moved through combinations his training with Oziel had burned into muscle memory, each strike flowing seamlessly into defensive position that anticipated the next attack.

A Spindralis got through his guard, claws raking across his armor with force that gouged deep scratches in the enchanted metal. The impact staggered him, but his Endurance allowed him to absorb what would have been crippling blow and continue fighting. His counter strike took the creature's front leg, Azure Edge severing the limb and sending the Spindralis tumbling.

Another leaped at his throat, jaws opened to tear through vulnerable neck. Raze activated Instant Transmission, blinking behind the creature to strike at its exposed spine. The blade bit deep, cutting through bone and tissue to paralyze the predator mid-attack. It crashed to the ground twitching, dying from wounds that had destroyed its ability to move.

Mariabel provided support from their formation's center, her remaining mana focused on precision strikes rather than area techniques. Fire erupted around specific targets, flames catching Spindralis that were positioning for attacks and disrupting their approach. The technique was economical but effective, her tactical awareness allowing her to maximize impact while conserving energy.

The assault broke after two minutes of sustained combat, the surviving Spindralis recognizing that continuing would only result in total annihilation. They melted back into the undergrowth, camouflage rendering them invisible as they retreated deeper into the forest environment. Their yowls echoed from multiple directions, warnings to each other and to whatever else inhabited this floor.

"Clear," Oziel announced, his breathing elevated but controlled despite having just killed perhaps twenty creatures in rapid succession. "Status check."

"Minor injuries, nothing critical," Raze reported, examining the claw marks across his armor. The gouges were deep but hadn't penetrated completely, his enhanced durability and the enchanted metal working together to prevent serious damage. "I can continue combat without immediate treatment."

"Low on mana," Mariabel said, her face showing strain from the extended technique usage. "Maybe fifteen percent remaining. I need at least twenty minutes of meditation before I'll be effective in another major engagement."

They found a relatively clear area near one of the massive trees, positioning themselves with backs against the trunk while maintaining watch on all approaches. The undergrowth around them pulsed with disturbing regularity, vegetation that was definitely more than simple plant life observing them with awareness that felt invasive.

Mariabel settled into meditation posture, her breathing evening out as she began drawing ambient mana from the dungeon's dense atmosphere. The third floor's energy concentration was noticeably higher than previous levels, allowing faster recovery than normal environment would permit.

Raze and Oziel maintained guard, their enhanced perceptions scanning for threats that might emerge while Mariabel was vulnerable. The forest remained active, shapes moving through the canopy overhead and undergrowth shifting with passage of creatures that stayed concealed. But nothing approached within weapon range, the pack intelligence apparently deciding that these particular prey items weren't worth additional casualties.

After twenty-five minutes Mariabel opened her eyes, her mana reserves recovered to approximately sixty percent. Not ideal but sufficient for continued operation with careful resource management.

"Ready to continue," she confirmed, standing and checking her equipment. "Though I'd prefer to avoid another swarm engagement until I'm back at full capacity."

They moved deeper into the forest environment, navigating around the massive trees while maintaining awareness of potential ambush positions. The undergrowth grew denser as they progressed, vegetation creating natural corridors that channeled movement toward specific areas.

The chamber opened into a clearing where something very different waited. Insectoid forms moved across web structures that stretched between trees, creatures that were simultaneously familiar and utterly alien. They had too many limbs arranged in patterns that shouldn't provide mobility but somehow did, radial jaws that opened in four directions rather than simple up-down, and bodies covered in chitinous plating that gleamed with iridescent colors.

Vorrhants. Perhaps twenty of them visible on the webs, though more likely lurked in shadows cast by the bizarre canopy. Their radial jaws clicked in complex rhythms that might have been communication, coordination between pack members that was being established before prey even entered their territory.

Raze activated Inspect.

Ding.

[Vorrhant]

Rank: Master (Peak)

Threat Level: Extreme in web environments

Special: Grappling specialists, weakness to fire

Master Peak like the Spindralis, but with environmental advantage that made them even more dangerous. The webs would restrict movement while the Vorrhants themselves were optimized for exactly that terrain, multiple limbs allowing them to navigate three-dimensional space that would confound bipedal opponents.

But they had a weakness. Fire.

"Mariabel," Raze said quietly, keeping his voice low to avoid triggering premature attack. "This is your engagement. Those webs will burn and the creatures are particularly vulnerable to heat based on their physiology. Oziel and I will handle any that get through your techniques."

She studied the web structure, her tactical mind immediately recognizing the opportunity. The strands connected between trees in patterns that created fuel for flames, dried silk that would ignite easily and spread rapidly once burning started.

"I'll need about thirty seconds to set up properly," she said, flames already beginning to gather around her hands. "Keep them occupied during the preparation."

Oziel moved forward into the clearing, his presence immediately drawing attention from every Vorrhant on the webs. The creatures recognized threat when they saw it, their radial jaws clicking faster as they communicated warnings and coordinated response to the intruder.

A dozen Vorrhants dropped from the webs simultaneously, multi-limbed bodies falling with controlled precision to land surrounding Oziel's position. Their approach was more cautious than the Spindralis had been, pack intelligence recognizing that this particular opponent required overwhelming force rather than standard hunting tactics.

Oziel's blade carved through the first wave with efficiency that had become routine, silver light manifesting as creatures died before completing their attacks. But the Vorrhants were adapting, using their multiple limbs to grapple his sword arm while others struck at exposed positions. The coordination was sophisticated, each creature supporting its packmates while seeking openings that couldn't be defended.

One succeeded in wrapping several limbs around Oziel's left arm, chitinous strength attempting to immobilize the limb while radial jaws moved toward vulnerable flesh. He responded by channeling Severance Authority through his own body rather than just his blade, cutting force manifesting along his arm to sever the grappling limbs before they could establish secure hold.

Raze engaged three that had circled around Oziel, their multi-limbed forms scrambling across the ground with disturbing speed. They attacked in sequence rather than simultaneously, each one probing his defense while the others positioned for follow-up strikes.

His blade found the lead Vorrhant's center mass, cutting through chitinous plating that was surprisingly resistant to penetration. The wound was deep but not immediately fatal, the creature's distributed anatomy allowing it to continue fighting despite severe injury.

The second Vorrhant struck while he was committed, multiple limbs wrapping around his legs in attempt to bring him down where radial jaws could reach vulnerable areas. Raze channeled mana through his lower body, reinforcement technique providing strength to tear free from the grapple before it could fully secure.

The third creature leaped at his face, radial jaws spread wide to catch his head in grip that would crack skull through pressure alone. He activated Instant Transmission, blinking sideways to let the Vorrhant pass through empty air. His counter strike took it from behind, Azure Edge severing enough of its limbs that it could no longer maintain coordination.

"Ready!" Mariabel's voice cut through the melee.

Raze and Oziel disengaged immediately, retreating from the Vorrhants to clear space for what was coming. The creatures pursued, sensing wounded prey attempting to flee, their pack instinct overriding caution that might have saved them.

Mariabel released her prepared technique with devastating effect. Fire erupted across the entire web structure, flames spreading through the dried silk with explosive speed. The conflagration consumed the webs in seconds, thousands of square feet of carefully constructed hunting grounds transforming into inferno that trapped everything within.

The Vorrhants still on the webs died instantly, chitinous bodies unable to withstand sustained heat at that intensity. Those on the ground attempted to flee but found themselves surrounded by falling burning debris, the web structure collapsing as its integrity failed. Several more creatures perished in the secondary fires, their vulnerability to heat making survival impossible once flames spread.

The handful that escaped the immediate conflagration scattered into the forest, abandoning the clearing to invaders who'd just destroyed their territory with single technique.

The flames burned themselves out after consuming available fuel, leaving behind blackened tree trunks and ash covered ground. The clearing was thoroughly destroyed, ecosystem eliminated in pursuit of tactical advantage.

"Effective," Oziel observed, surveying the devastation with professional appreciation. "Though the mana cost must have been significant."

"Forty percent of my reserves," Mariabel confirmed, breathing hard from the exertion. "But it eliminated approximately thirty hostiles without requiring close combat, so the efficiency is acceptable."

They crossed the ruined clearing cautiously, watching for surviving Vorrhants that might attempt desperate final attacks. But the creatures had fled completely, their pack structure disrupted beyond recovery by the loss of so many members in single engagement.

The passage beyond the clearing descended through more organic-seeming stone, walls that pulsed with rhythms suggesting heartbeats rather than geological processes. Temperature continued rising gradually, dry heat that made breathing increasingly uncomfortable despite adequate ventilation.

They encountered smaller groups of both Spindralis and Vorrhants as they progressed deeper, engagements that tested them but never threatened to overwhelm. The creatures seemed more interested in delaying tactics than genuine attempts to kill, as if trying to wear them down through attrition before a larger threat could finish what the regular inhabitants started.

After an hour of steady progress through the forest environment, they reached a chamber that was clearly different from everything they'd encountered on the third floor. The space was vast, ceiling invisible in darkness overhead, walls so distant they disappeared into shadows that bioluminescent fungi couldn't penetrate. At the chamber's center stood a tree that dwarfed even the massive specimens they'd passed earlier, trunk thick as a castle tower and branches spreading to create canopy that covered hundreds of feet.

And at the base of that tree, something stirred.

The creature that emerged was a nightmare synthesis of everything the third floor had thrown at them. It had the general body structure of a Spindralis, cat-like form enlarged to monstrous proportions. But its tail was replaced with multiple whips similar to the Spindralis's single appendage, and additional limbs extended from its torso in arrangements that borrowed from Vorrhant physiology. The combination created something that was optimized for both hunting and grappling, a predator that incorporated advantages from multiple evolutionary paths.

Its eyes were intelligent, awareness that transcended simple animal consciousness studying the intruders with calculation that felt almost human. This wasn't just strong, it was smart, capable of tactical adaptation that would make fighting it exponentially more dangerous than raw power alone suggested.

Raze activated Inspect, though he already knew what the result would show.

Ding.

[Apex Predator - Floor Boss]

Rank: Grandmaster (Low)

Threat Level: Catastrophic

Grandmaster rank. The first genuine match for Oziel's capabilities, a creature that wouldn't be overwhelmed simply through power disparity. This would be an actual fight, danger level elevated to where even the Grandmaster swordsman could potentially fall if mistakes were made.

The boss room awaited.

And beyond it, two more floors before they faced Bephemoth and claimed the prize Raze needed for his engagement gift.

The three of them stood at the chamber's entrance, catching breath while evaluating the creature that would test everything they'd become.

"This is where it gets serious," Raze said quietly.

"Agreed," Oziel replied, his grip tightening on his sword.

They stepped forward together, crossing the threshold into the boss chamber as the entrance sealed behind them with grinding sound of stone on stone.
