It was nice to have a subtle reminder that the universe was unpredictable, and yet predictable. It seemed to favor apes, or humans, as Terrence claimed, but other than that, the infinite nature of the universe would leave anyone feeling small, and useless. Cosmic Nihilism at its finest example.
Jimmy was more surprised by the fact that humans were not rare at all. He couldn't help wondering how humans came to be on the planet he was on, it was hard to predict it.
If Anna was here, she'd say that other species of lower apes shouldn't start existing yet, not to mention a a few million years ago, and he was aware of that, but yet this world was entirely unpredictable, so assuming that lower species of apes hadn't been massacred by either humans, or dinosaurs, the odds of humans evolving very early into the timeline was very likely.
Either that, or humans were made in a lab. It was possible, because if there was one bunker in this world, the odds of other bunkers with advanced technologies being spread across the world, was large. Aliens, possibly of different species, could have dropped a bunch of humans in the Jurassic Era as an experiment!
Jimmy wanted to ask Terrence about this, but he feared another ten minute rant. Bottom-line, he didn't care how humans came to be in this world, and all he really cared about was to figure out a way to best put this bunker into use. Which was what he was about to say, but Terrence cut him off again.
"You may be wondering how humans popped up in this world," Terrence said, "Come on, I can see it in your eyes, you want to know. Well, I'll tell you anyway, because as much as I hate humans, I crash landed on this darn planet because I wanted to study humans themselves."
Furthermore, he added, "Humans aren't supposed to exist in the same timeline as dinosaurs. We're not millions of years into the past, as you might have thought, this planet is serving the paradoxical concept of time just like any planet does. We're in contemporary times, this is not some sort of horror episode, and yet, this was what interested me to begin with. This is why I came here, and stranded myself for thirty years! Seventeen in confinement, sure, but I still wasted a lot of time. I can't wait to get out of here!"
"Stay focused, Terrence," Jimmy insisted, "Can you tell me why humans exist here, so we can get on with our day?"
"Right, of course," Terrence sighed, and he seemed irritated, "Well, thirty years ago, I heard that this planet, your planet, otherwise known as Tombus-1, had a rare case of early human evolution. You need to understand that regardless of the planet, regardless of where in the 2,500 Galaxies under our jurisdiction, humans aren't supposed to co-exist with dinosaurs, they're not supposed to evolve this early, yet they did! Either Mother Universe is finally correcting her mistakes, or she's amplifying her mistakes, but either way, there are only three recorded cases of humans evolving during the Era of Dinosaurs, or any Era where huge creatures roamed the lands, really."
"So the humans here are special?" Jimmy asked, "In many accounts, I mean?"
"Well, yes," Terrence nodded, "Your magic, as you call it, has certainly helped the several species of humans across the planet, but magic isn't the only reason they're unique. Their evolution is, in a way, extremely accelerated. Something is helping the humans evolve, adapt, and overcome the brutal era they're in, and we don't know what."
"So this bunker was built to study humans?" Jimmy asked.
"Yes, originally," Terrence said, "Several species of aliens landed here to study humans, so there should be plenty of other bunkers spread across the world. But the thing with dinosaurs is that they're big, too big, and some here are intelligent too, so every research bunker eventually turns into a survival bunker, because magical dinosaurs are an absolute pain in the arse to deal with!"
Holding his head, frustrated, he also added, "I can safely assume that most research bunkers were abandoned, just like this one, with each of them further away from the truth about the speedy evolution of the humans on this planet. We know that there were some species of apes before humans came to be, but that's about it, we have no clue why the humans here are so damn good at surviving, and evolving! It's an anomaly, one that no scientist has yet unraveled."
"That's a mystery alright," Jimmy said, "I haven't seen the humans around here behaving any different from the ones back on my own planet, so I don't know what to tell you."
"I don't expect an answer from you," Terrence said, "Besides, I don't care anymore. A damned Allosaurus Fragilis wrecked my ship thirty years ago, and I've suffered ever since. I just want to go home. I'll help you as best as I can, and use any scrap I can find to build myself a spaceship, but after that, you're alone, human, I can't stick around forever, so you better remember what I'm about to teach you in the following month."
"You got it," Jimmy nodded, "I don't care to go back to my home planet, I like it here. I'm getting all the ass I can handle, any day, and whenever I want it. Pair that with some cool ass laser pistols, and dino clones, and I'll be happy for the rest of my life, haha."
"Absolutely primal," Terrence sighed, "Alright then, follow me. You should see why this bunker is so important."
After this accelerating, and albeit lengthy conversation, it was time to get to work. Terrence claimed that he was smart enough to work any tool in the bunker, and Jimmy took his word for it. Other than looting this place, he wanted to see if he could do anything else with it.
The tribe wars that were waiting to happen in the outside world were concerning, yes, but he started thinking ahead. He started thinking of what he was to do after he bested any tribe that posed a threat to his. Terrence was willing to be a teacher, and it was best to listen to him well throughout the following weeks!
