Jimmy kept pushing his luck, and walked directly towards the striped dinosaurs. He hoped to break the boundary of the 'circle' these dinosaurs formed around Gutaxun, and hopefully scare them away.
The reason why he believed this plan might work, was because these dinosaurs were too cautious. They were one tonne killing machines, and yet, they were afraid to get bitten. At least, he thought they were afraid to get bitten.
Jimmy kept walking forward, and Gutaxun followed suit. However, by helping his friends climb up to safety, he now had it twice as difficult to see what was in front of him, because his friends climbed up there along with their hand-held torches.
This plan started to look more and more stupid, and it ended up being sacrificial again. He kept pushing his limits, his luck, and yet he could barely see the dinosaurs in front of him, so if he was attacked, he wouldn't be able to see them coming unless they were a few meters away.
He made a bargain, hoping that the paranoia these dinosaurs had would end up being their weakness, but the results were nearly the same. He could still hear them walking around slowly, attempting to maintain the circle they've built.
"Please, just piss off." His voice was low, and his confidence was non-existent at this point. "I'm too tired for this bullshit."
Suddenly, one of the dinosaurs poked its head out of the darkness, and stared at Jimmy. Its large, reptilian head almost gave him a heart attack! It looked a lot bigger up close.
Despite the theory that these dinosaurs were paranoid, one of them ignored Gutaxun's deep growls, and got as close as two meters, or roughly over six feet, right in front of Jimmy!
"Holy shit…" He held his breath.
This was terrifying, no doubt, but it was also an opportunity presented on a golden platter. The dinosaur in front of him did not attack, which only thickened the advantage he suddenly got. To his surprise, its expression looked soft, and it kept looking at Jimmy, observing him as if he was the first ever human it saw.
Jimmy was confused, but he did not waste this opportunity. He was finally close enough to cause great damage, so he quickly tapped into its heartbeat, started hearing its blood, and jumped straight to its brain!
Now, he had two options. He could either kill the dinosaur on the spot, with something as simple as a brain aneurysm, or he could try and tame it. He was tempted to follow the prior approach.
However, before he was about to attack, he got a good view of its brain structure, its in-built nature, and even its thoughts. He was pummeled with countless memories that this dinosaur had, and this was a new experience, one that he hadn't experienced with other dinosaurs before, either because he hadn't been powerful enough to do so, or because the ones he dealt with were too primal, and mostly not sentient.
The fact that his powers were burdened by this dinosaur's brain, led him to believe that he was not only dealing with a smart creature, but a conscious one as well! Attacking it would feel like a crime at this point.
"My god," He gasped, surprised, "I understand now. You weren't paranoid, you were just curious!"
As he spoke, the expression of the dinosaur in front of him changed for the better. Its mood changed, and he knew that it changed, because it started releasing these cheerful chirps that he could never mistake as violent. Gutaxun chirped nearly the same way when he was happy, granted, his chirps were a lot louder.
Gutaxun started chirping as well, reminding him of the different volumes of chirps. He finally lowered his head, showing vulnerability, and took a step forward, gently pressing his snout on the dinosaur in front of him.
Jimmy watched in awe. He was confused, and happy at the same time. He decided not to kill the dinosaur, and used his abilities to scan the rest of its brain.
Judging from the complexity of its brain, this dinosaur was not only conscious, it was likely smarter than the average caveman of this era! He hadn't studied any human brains yet, but plenty of patterns hinted that this dinosaur was at least smarter than Zik, that hunter who disappeared into the wild a few hours ago. That was a given.
Jimmy chuckled, but he could not relax. He heard three other heartbeats shortly after, which meant that the rest of the pack had approached.
At first he was nervous, but since they were chirping as well, he relaxed. For reasons he could not yet figure out, these meaty predators were not hostile.
Afterwards, one of them got very close, close enough that he could feel its breath on his chest, but it did not attack. It raised its head upwards, and started looking at his hand-held torch.
The torch hurt its eyes, of course, so it shook its head in irritation, but its mood still remained cheerful. It just wanted to observe the torch, which hinted that it was curious.
"What is going on…" He asked himself.
Jimmy now knew that these dinosaurs were smart, but he still didn't know what they wanted. He couldn't understand them, of course, so he kept wracking his head, trying to find the best theory of why they approached, and essentially, why they chose peace over war even though they had a strong advantage.
Their curious nature wasn't the right answer to his questions. Curiosity did not cancel out violence, not usually.
Desperate for an answer, he started scanning all of their brains, confirmed that they were more or less of the same intelligence amongst one another, and essentially conscious. Things started making a bit sense when he saw one particular memory of theirs.
"They're not curious about the fire…" He mumbled. "They mistook us as their old friends! Old masters?"
Jimmy saw a vivid memory of a human in one of their memories, he could even see the pores on the human's nose, and this was interesting, but he found himself getting nervous the more he observed the image in his head. He could not figure out why he was nervous, not for a while, but then it hit him; He was looking at a human, but of a different species!
The Uncanny Valley effect was hitting his primal senses like a train. His primal subconscious warned him that he was not looking at a friendly face, or at least, it warned him that there was something very different, and almost wrong about the human he was picturing in his head.
Jimmy was a Homo Sapien in this world, or in other words, a modern human, so even amongst cavemen, he knew what humans were supposed to look like.
"That's no Homo Sapien," He stroked his chin. "His head is too damn big. He looks like a jacked-up horse hybrid."
The second, and perhaps most concerning question he asked himself, was, "Why does he look so clean, though? Why is his face shaved, and pampered? I doubt this fucker is from the future or some shit like that, he's wearing animal fur, and looks as stupid as he looks smart. This is confusing as fuck."
