Alaric lifted his lips lightly and wiped the wet blood off his face, ignoring Phyllis's yelling and cursing at him.
"Finally…"
He quickly let himself fall back, relaxing as he lay on the floor to rest, glancing at the sky with countless thoughts, not because he wanted to, but since he had no choice but to do it because he was already exhausted.
His plan had already succeeded. Things had gone way beyond his predictions, but the secret of his [Curse of Demon King] had helped him one way or another.
After everything was done, the first thing he would do was dig deeper into information about his [Curse of Demon King]. Maybe there were other secrets he didn't know yet. And his understanding of his own weapon was still too shallow to fully use its value.
"Student Alaric is the winner of this duel." The professor nodded quietly and gave Alaric a praising judging look.
A student with such an inferior origin in the academy had defeated one of the geniuses of the generation. It was an achievement no one ever imagined he could pull off—even if the match wasn't perfect, it didn't matter. A win was still a win.
Phyllis, her face twisted in agony, gritted her teeth in frustration as she forced the hideous worms out of her body while screaming.
"He won?… No… Impossible! He used poison… he's cheating!"
Not only Phyllis had that thought—most of the students who witnessed the duel were muttering the same thing. Using trickery in a duel was shameless. A wave of curses and scolding surged straight at Alaric.
However, the professor, who had been watching the entire duel. His voice surged with energy mana, echoing through the arena.
"Stop talking nonsense."
Silence.
The professor swept his cold, disdainful eyes across most of the students. Then he slowly turned his attention to Phyllis, who was on the verge of unconsciousness—possibly even death—if she hadn't been saved just now.
In the next moment, a stone angel descended from the sky and landed beside Phyllis, a cloud of light bursting across every corner of the arena. The summon slowly approached her and wrapped her in its long, glimmering leather wings. Just a few seconds later, a bizarre, pure light gathered over them like a pillar descending from the heavens, forcing everyone—even the professors—to freeze in astonishment.
Then, the stone angel spread its wings and slowly faded away.
From the heavenly pillar of light, Phyllis stepped out, staggering before collapsing and vomiting a handful of hideous worms. Trembling and dizzy, she slowly lifted her head, her eyes widening in shock and tension.
"G-Grandpa?"
The professor from before had been replaced by a handsome man with pure white hair extending to his feet.
His eyes shimmered silver like an angel's. He stared down at Phyllis with an unreadable expression, lingering for a moment before speaking coldly:
" It's a disgraceful excuse for your patheticness? so, you're a deep disappointment to our clan…"
Just at that moment, for some reason, Phyllis slowly bowed her head and knelt motionlessly, not daring to look up at all, as if her grandpa's words had stabbed straight into her heart.
Pretty soon, some professors hurried over and bowed politely before the old man, who was supposed to be the angel of humanity of the Neonard Clan—one of the mighty elders.
"Greetings to the Angel of Humanity. Why did you come here without announcing it to our academy? If you had, we would've prepared a proper welcome instead of meeting you in a place like this."
Barian said respectfully, welcoming the old man, called Baxter Leornard. A few other professors also stepped up to greet him.
"Skip the formality."
Baxter spoke with an emotionless voice. Then he linger for a little before saying.
"I came here for two things."
"First, I wanted to check on my grandchildren however…" He sighed. "It's pitiful. Ones have the most potential but committed an unforgivable sin against the Sun God and another failed in the challenge. And the other is weak and dead-brained."
He clicked his tongue as he glanced at Phyllis and Dana, who was standing some distance away. Eventually, his disappointed expression slowly shifted into excitement when his gaze landed on Alaric.
"And you, child of the Nameless God… I've come here to meet you."
"M-Me?" Alaric struggled to sit up, but his body was still in terrible condition after the match. However, he quickly regained his balance when a beam of light poured over him, healing his wounds and restoring all the energy he had lost earlier.
"That's right. I'm here to recruit you into my clan."
Alaric just frowned in confusion. He had no idea what he should do now, so he only scratched the back of his head. One of the mighty elders of a legendary clan had come here just to recruit him. Did he really deserve that kind of privilege? Not only him — everyone here was having the same question, even the professors.
Alaric tried to pick the best words to say to the old man. He didn't want to show even a hint of disrespect to someone with the highest status in the world.
"Sir… I sincerely appreciate your priceless offer. However, I'm just a slave, no more, no less. So I don't deserve such a grant."
Silence.
Silence.
Alaric gulped, worried that his refusal might have sounded impolite. But then a burst of laughter echoed across the arena.
The old man finally spoke in a humorous tone.
"You're a slave, exactly?… I don't think any kind of slave could speak that politely. They don't get education."
Skipping any suspicion, Baxter continued.
"Don't underrate your achievement, kid… You're the child of the Nameless God. No, I suppose everyone in this century is underestimating the achievement of passing the Nameless God's Challenge."
He glanced at everyone, looking at them as if they were clueless and brainless in the arena, and spoke up:
"Do you really think the Nameless God's Challenge is equal to the Sun God's or Shadow God's?"
"That's a stupid mindset. Anyone who steps into the Nameless God's gate has no way to survive… As far as I know from the Rhodes Leader's brother, who took the challenge but died later from an unknown illness… Well, that's only half true."
"Rhodes Leader's brother was the strongest among all candidates that year, including the current leader clans. He lost in the first challenge of the Nameless God. Somehow, by some unknown way, he escaped from hell. In the end, he died because of… the fear of an undefeatable demon and everything he faced in hell, not from any illness."
"However, that boy changed that so-called impossibility," the old man said while pointing at Alaric, who was still confused after being flattered like that.
"He had nothing—just a weak body on the verge of death. But now he's standing here. Do you think any of you could do what he did?"
"Obliterate thousands of fiends, climb the cursed mountain, and eventually kill a Demon King."
"Tell me, can you do the same thing? Kill a Demon King..a vicious demon that even I could not defeat him as well"
The old man mocked all the students, who stayed silent and bowed their heads in embarrassment and fear.
The old man turned to Alaric and smiled.
"You're not a slave… If you think you are, that means you're calling everyone here even worse than a slave."
"To recruit you… I'd even give you one of my granddaughters to marry. Uh, no..you can take all of them if you want."
Alaric's face twitched as he tried to hide his scowl, but half of it still stiffened. He cursed inwardly, judging that vile old man. Moreover, how could he know he had killed a Demon King? He didn't even remember reporting it to the investigators.
"Damned old man!"
