Serena saw Eiravyn smiling at the other girl, and a stabbing pain shot through her chest. It felt like a part of her was being forcefully ripped out.
Eiravyn was surprised to see Serena standing in the hallway. Was she here to see me? Eiravyn thought, and smiled at her.
When a whirlwind of negative emotions crashed on him — hurt, anger, dejection, disbelief— they switched so quickly and amplified each other that he was unable to breathe for a second.
Eiravyn wondered whose emotions were getting mixed with his own. And then he was caught unprepared when a sudden onslaught of betrayal overtook his senses.
Eiravyn gasped. These emotions were not his own, he lifted his head and saw Serena's defeated expression, creating an agonizing hole in his chest. It was then he realized that the emotions were not coming from his or any other person — but from his mate.
Serena was in his mind — her emotions, burning brighter than his own.
But it was not meant to happen now, not when they hadn't completed the mate bond. Why was she feeling betrayal the most? Who betrayed her? Eiravyn asked himself.
The moment he lifted his head again to stabilize his breathing —as he felt weak— he saw a faint light surrounding Serena, as if shielding and protecting her. But it only appeared for a brief moment, and anyone without good eye sight would have missed it.
Eiravyn was trying to understand the sudden shifts of emotion raging inside him and was trying to get used to it, but the moment he looked up again, Serena was nowhere in sight.
"Shit!"
Eiravyn cursed out, 'What the hell happened?' It was only then he saw Ava standing in the same spot Serena once stood.
Eiravyn strode purposefully towards them, the servants and Ava, who were still standing there.
"What happened here?" Eiravyn demanded harshly from the servants, who had a dazed look on their faces, as if they too did not understand what had happened.
His attention was fixed on the servants, and Ava felt she was being neglected. Why was he not asking her, but asking these measly servants.
"Eiravyn?" Ava called while rubbing his forearms.
He was so close to spacing out, and it made her nervous.
Was she really his mate? Ava thought but did not want to believe her.
She turned to Eiravyn, releasing only the slightest heavenly bead and rubbing whatever pleasure chemical her vampire ability had produced to seduce Eiravyn.
"Forget that human Eiravyn. She is low-class. I just showed her her place, and I'm sure she's in a cold corner crying her eyes out." She paused before adding under her breath, "fucking peasan."
Ava's expression lit up when Eiravyn did not push her away this time, and felt that she had gotten to him.
She bit her lower lip and gave him a coy look.
"You should go to the royal court, Eiravyn the council members must be waiting for you. We would talk later. Is that okay?" Ava felt like now was the perfect time to prove to him that she would make a good queen.
But Eiravyn was not paying attention to her. Instead, he was listening to their thoughts to find out what had happened a few minutes ago, before he came out — that was why he had been quiet.
Ava not knowing that called to him again. "Eiravyn?" While rubbing his forearm, her gaze was cast up so she could see his face properly.
Eiravyn yanked his arms away from her hold, making the girl miss her step and almost fall, but Eiravyn didn't care.
"It's Your Majesty for you. Don't ever forget that!"
The servants were absolutely confused. Even they too didn't know where Serena was but they thought she might have gone to her room since she didn't really know anywhere in the kingdom. They had thought Ava was going to be their queen but watching the way Eiravyn treated her just now they were not so sure anymore. Inwardly, Aurora was feeling happy, as she didn't really like the Ava girl to begin with.
Eiravyn turned to the servants. "You two are dismissed!"
He took two steps at a time all the way to the fourth floor and paused in front of the door of Serena's room.
The lack of the familiar scent he was begining to get used to told him that she was not there, but he still knocked before entering.
Eiravyn walked into the room to an empty bed. He checked the lounge, and it was the same result.
Eiravyn checked every nook and cranny of her room in search of her but it was the same result. She was not here!
Eiravyn exhaled in frustration. He should never have allowed her stay on her own. And he should never have gone to the study without seeing her. he had just wanted to get all his work done and sign every document that needed to be signed so he would have her all for himself today after the banquet.
But never in his wildest dreams did he think that she would meet Ava in here. He regretted not setting boundaries with her all this time but he never thought he would find his mate in his trip to the human realm and never had the chance to properly set boundaries.
It was all a misunderstanding that could have been avoided if he had told Serena the truth in the beginning. He wished he could tell her that Ava meant absolutely nothing to him, and it was her he wanted to crown as his queen and not Ava.
Minutes tricked slowly, and Eiravyn switched between sitting on the sofa, and in-between, he paced through the room. Hoping she would come back soon.
