CAT WARLOCK: This Darklord Feasts Upon Horror

Chapter 47: Psycho Force

"Solved?" The lady in red dress spoke again. "Finding clues for the ACPD is different from solving a case, girl. Solving means…"

The muscular in military pants stood up. His voice was as deep as water. "Solving means you took care of the NCE. Did you kill it?"

Selina looked over to Mater. The black cat nodded.

"I didn't." Selina said the truth.

The lady smirked.

"My cat did." Selina said.

"Come on, girl! Why do you even bring me up?" Mater meowed.

"That cat?" The lady shot a gaze at Mater.

"She is telling the truth." The brooding man spoke. "I can feel an enormous amount of NES from that cat."

Everyone's gazes turned to Mater.

"Feast your eyes upon your soon to be dark lord." Mater stroked his whiskers in a smug way.

Whatever the cat was. It was definitely not ordinary. His behavior already told them that.

"Alright. Break it up!" A man in black walked into the room. "Doctor Avaline will come here soon. He will be the judge and guide for your examination."

Everyone shut their mouth. They waited patiently. Selina found a seat next to Rebecca and sat down.

"By the way, you can call me Becky. No one calls me Rebecca."

"Alright, Becky." Selina said.

Soon, an old man walked inside the room. He had gray hair that stood up like nails. A white lab coat on his upper body and a pair of faded black pants underneath. He wore a pair of thick glasses that made his eyes look like those of a rainfrog.

"Hello, everyone. My name is Doctor Stephen Avaline. I will be your judge today. Whether or not you receive your Psychic Certificate will fall down to me and the machines.

Any questions?"

Selina raised her hand up.

"State your name and your question."

"I am Selina Isles. I want to ask. What exactly are we examining?"

Some of the others chuckled.

Doctor Avaline stayed professional and didn't mock her for her lack of knowledge.

"Have you attended any of our Psychic Class, Miss Isles?"

Selina shook her head.

"Alright. Let me summarize everything for you then. Everyone can treat this as a reminder before the test as well.

We all know about the existence of NCEs. NCE is short for Non-Corporeal Entity. These are beings that can supersede the natural order of the physical world.

The Non-Corporeal part of their name means two things. One is that their body may not be physical but instead spiritual or metaphysical. For this type, you can't hurt them. Not with bullets or explosions. This is why the ACPD has a special silver bullet that was blessed with divinity. These bullets can hurt this type of NCE.

The second means that NCEs source their power from non physical energy. In our society, fuel, electricity, and nuclear are our main sources of energy. NCE on the other hand took energy from Negative Emotional Spectrum, or we usually call them NES for short.

NES is a collection of negative emotions. Hatred, addiction, sorrow, anger, regret, etc. All forms of negativity are a form of energy. Mental energy. The NCEs can source these negativities into actual physical energy and use them for supernatural acts.

But they aren't the only ones that can make use of the NES.

Psychics can also channel the power of NES and accomplish wonders that ordinary humans can't."

Selina raised her hands again, which caused everyone to look at her.

"Yes, Miss Isles?" Doctor Avaline was still as patient as ever.

"The NES. Don't they sound a bit… I don't know. Negative? Are there any side effects of using their power?"

"Of course, there are side effects. Just like how a martial art may break their bones and tear their muscles in combat. The NES strains our mind and may cause us to lose control. This is why all registered Psychics must always take a quarterly psychological test to measure their mental stability.

But don't worry. The Institute and the DSI have developed many ways for the Psychics to maintain their mentality."

"Oh… I understand." Selina nodded her head.

"Now. When it comes to the examination, we will measure two things from you.

First is your Psycho Force Capacity. This is basically how much you can use your psychic abilities and how well you can maintain your mentality. The higher your Capacity is, the more NES you can store.

Second is your Supernatural Conversion Rate. A good source of power isn't enough but you must also have a talent to convert it into supernatural psychic abilities. The higher your Conversion Rate, the more powerful you are.

Once we're done with these two. There will be a combat test. PFC and SCR aren't enough to measure one's capability in the moment of danger.

As Iron Rank Paranormal Investigator, you might not face a lot of otherworldly threats. But from Bronze Rank and above, how well you can fight will decide how long you can survive in this treacherous and deadly profession.

If everyone is ready and has no more questions, you can all follow me to the examination room."

No one said anything this time. Not even Selina. They all stood up and followed Doctor Avaline. Mater climbed on Selina's shoulders and went with her.

"Psycho Force Capacity and Supernatural Conversion Rate. Aren't these just their mana pool and magical affinity?

Mana pool can decide the fate of a mage. But affinity is much more complex than that and can't simply be measured by a number. A mage that has affinity with fire might not match very well with water."

Mater drew comparisons between Psychics and the magic users he knew so well. He decided to stay silent and continued observing the situation.

The group switched from the small waiting room to a larger room with many particular machines.

There were a lot of scientists in the white lab coats standing around and checking on things.

Doctor Avaline stopped in front of a large square machine with a silvery surface. The front of the machine has a big screen and a scanner beneath it.

"When I call your name. Just put your hand on the scanner. Either left hand or right hand is fine. It doesn't matter.

First, Loretta Engleman."
