CAT WARLOCK: This Darklord Feasts Upon Horror

Chapter 50: G.A.I.M.

"Next, Terry Lang."

The business man ascended to the platform. The mechanical arm moved up and down, scanning the conversion rate of his supernatural power.

[SUPERNATURAL CONVERSION RATE: 19%]

[RATING: F+]

"Almost at twenty percent. I can see that you don't train too much. Please don't worry about the rating too much. It is not the thing that will decide your future."

The business smiled. "I know."

"Next, Zoe Kovac."

It was the high school girl's turn.

[SUPERNATURAL CONVERSION RATE: 15%]

[RATING: F]

"Another F rank. Please don't mind the number too much as I said. It really isn't that important."

The young girl shrugged. "I don't really care. I'm only here because my father told me to."

Dr. Avaline sweated profusely. 'Another nepo baby, I assume...'

"Next, Rebecca Martinez."

Becky went up on the platform. She didn't seem that confident this time. She channeled her power. Her two ponytails broke the hairbands and floated upwards.

[SUPERNATURAL CONVERSION RATE: 29%]

[RATING: D]

"Around thirty percent." Dr. Avaline nodded. "A very respectable amount, Miss Martinez."

Becky didn't even try to hide her gloomy face. "Please don't tease me, Doctor."

"I'm being real, Miss Martinez. For someone your age, D Rank is very good.

Now, let's move on to our final contestant. Miss Isles. Please step on the platform."

Selina nodded. She carefully entered the machine.

She didn't understand how to actually channel the NES inside her. But she was going to try to replicate what she did to save Mater.

The black cat reached his Chaos tentacles out to the machine once more to mess with it in case Selina didn't pass. He was not going to let her woman be embarrassed in front of everyone else.

However, he was also worrying too much this time. Selina didn't need his help.

The goth girl closed her eyes and focused on her breathing. She thought back to the feeling when she protected Mater. The surge of emotion that moved her body.

And then, the tattoo on her chest lit up in gold.

Dr. Avaline lowered his glasses. "As I suspected, the tattoo on her chest is a GAIM."

"What is a GAIM, Stephen?" Hank said.

"Geometric Amplification Interface Matrix. It is a unique kind of pattern that can be tattooed on one's skin to amplify their Psychic power. Some can also provide unique abilities."

Selina's hair floated up and moved in the air like everyone else. A faint barrier appeared around her body.

"An ability like that." Dr. Avaline continued. "Her conversion rate should be more than 40% to be able to use GAIM."

[SUPERNATURAL CONVERSION RATE: 75%]

[RATING: A]

Dr. Avaline had no reaction when he saw the results. After all, Selina was the daughter of a Neutralizer. It would only be surprising if her results were low.

Selina's hair calmed down and the tattoo lost its light, it returned to the usual black ink color.

The goth girl quickly exited the machine. She heard everything Dr. Avaline said.

"So this is a GAIM. Why didn't my mother tell me about it?" Selina said.

"She probably wanted to protect you." Dr. Avaline said.

Selina shook her head. Her gloomy expression disappeared when she saw Mater. Her white teeth appeared with a bright smile.

"I got an A, Mr. Mater!" Selina said.

"Good job!" Mater meowed and gave her a thumbs up.

"Did that cat really just give a thumbs up?" Loretta mumbled.

"You weren't kidding when you said it was the one who took care of the NCEs, huh?" Rebecca said.

"I never lie. But no one believes me."

Selina picked up Mater and held him in her arms. Her scent enveloped the black cat.

"Ah... The familiar warmth." The cat meowed softly.

"Alright, everyone." Dr. Avaline clapped his hand. The examination is finished. Now we will do the combat test. Please follow me."

The group left the white examination room and entered a different room. This room, or more precisely, this arena was much larger with a high ceiling. The floor was made of large white cobblestones that allowed for freedom of movement. On the side of the arena was a small protective room with a glass pane that allowed the audience to observe the arena clearly.

"Here's the rule of the combat test.

You are not allowed to use any weapon or tool unless it is related to your Psychic Ability.

You will face a Menace Level NCE. This is the average power NCE in the Menace Level. According to our research, this type of NCE is around 60% of the usual NCEs sighting. Most of the danger you face will be similar to it.

So we need to know you can deal with it. If you can't deal with the NCE, you are not qualified for this job.

As before, I will be your judge.

The goal is very simple. Survive for at least five minutes. If I think your life is in danger, I will intervene and stop the test.

But it also means that you fail this test.

Now. Who wants to go first?"

This time, not a lot of people voiced their opinion. Loretta and Clive both looked at Selina, which she ignored entirely. She knew nothing about fighting but Mater was here so she wasn't worried.

The business man adjusted his glasses. He seemed to be wanting to go. Hank started to do warm-ups. He also seemed eager.

The high school girl, Zoe, popped a gummy balloon and didn't seem to have any concern or care toward the test.

"Let's volunteer, Selina. We should finish this soon and go check out the cold storage." Mater meowed.

Selina nodded. "Yeah. I will definitely wait for the others to go first. I won't be reckless."

Mater rolled his eyes. "That is definitely not what I said. Ugh! Without Aurora, communicating is exhausting."

Hank had finished his warm-ups. He approached Dr. Avaline.

"Let me go first. I have been waiting for this all day."

The mad scientist in the lab coat smiled and stepped beside.

"Be my guest. The rest follow me to the secured room."

Everyone entered the small room, leaving only Hank outside in the arena. He cracked his neck a few times and lowered his body.

"Come on. Let me see what the great Institute has in store."

Dr. Avaline controlled the arena via a panel in the secured room. He clicked a few buttons and typed some indescribable sequence.

Then he lowered down to the microphone.

"Get ready, Hank. Battle starts in...
