Lighting Lanterns in the Mountains and Seas

Chapter 116 Monsters

To make matters worse, visibility was hampered by the space in the crevice of the rocks.

With a disjointed line of sight and a cacophony of fluttering noises beside their ears, along with the juice from their slashes flowing down the stone wall, their bodies were already drenched in a pungent stench.

The two, unable to watch out for each other's back, were quickly wrapped around their ankles by tentacles and dragged out. There was no way to resist; there was barely any room to bend their legs, and wild kicking did little to break free from the entanglement. The two people dragged out nearly had their skin scraped off against the rock wall.

"Ah!" Wu Jinliang screamed in panic.

Faced with the attack of this unknown terrifying creature, anyone would panic when caught off guard.

Shi Chun was no exception; panicking, with hands and feet in disarray, he exerted his full strength in a desperate move as he was pulled out of the crevice. At this point, who would dare hold back—"No Demon Blade" slash!

Grasping at the rock crevice with one hand, he swung his other hand back with a knife, bang, flesh burst open.

Then the blade danced chaotically, with a series of bangs where the blade met its targets, explosions followed.

In fact, the monster's defensive power was not very high, and it had been easy to wound the creature with slashes before, but a cut on the monster's body was just a big gash. At most, the tentacles could be chopped off. The monster's central body was too large, and a few cuts were not feared; the more it was injured, the more ferocious its attacks, like an enraged beast.

The power of the "No Demon Blade" was revealed, causing flesh to explode all around, inflicting devastating damage on these monsters.

But Wu Jinliang was not having an easy time; his blade was big and heavy, swinging it like he was giving the monsters a back massage.

All in all, his response was not swift enough, and soon his wrist was entangled by the monsters. He was wrapped up by a bundle of tentacles and dragged away.

Although the Treasure Robe was good, it could not withstand such twisting force. The rapidly coiling tentacles were about to smother his mouth and nose. He tried to use Mana to break free from the entanglement, but the monster's body was very elastic, with a significant buffering force.

Just as his mouth was about to be covered, he exclaimed, "Chun Tian, save..."

He couldn't finish his words before his mouth was stuffed, and he bit fiercely, but the monster was not at all afraid of the biting force of his mouth.

Shi Chun, hanging on the cliff face, took a moment to glance around coldly, clearing the surrounding attacks with random slashes. He pushed off from the rock wall and lunged at the creature dragging Wu Jinliang away as if jumping directly into a bottomless abyss. With a knife in each hand, he slashed wildly at the monster.

Boom! The coiling tentacles burst open, releasing Wu Jinliang, who clung stubbornly to his broadsword.

The monster writhed in pain, and Shi Chun grabbed the falling Wu Jinliang. Pushing off the monster's twisting mass, he used the momentum to pull Wu Jinliang back toward the rock wall.

The shaken Wu Jinliang clung to a protrusion on the rock wall, frantically brandishing his knife and chopping wildly.

But the truly powerful attacker was still Shi Chun. After a flurry of flesh explosions, the group of monsters did not dare to approach rashly for a time.

"Wuu wuu wuu..."

The sudden blast of noise, like a horn, sounded again.

And with it came a terrifying sight, as the surrounding monsters, glaring covetously, began to disappear like illusions, starting from a patch of skin, then rapidly spreading to the entire body.

Very soon, countless monsters vanished from the two men's sight.

Wu Jinliang finally understood what those invisible monsters outside were; they were these creatures. He shouted in surprise, "Chun Tian, it's them, they can turn invisible!"

Shi Chun had a bad feeling, daring not to hold anything back. He used whatever methods he had and quickly employed Mana to stimulate his right eye's superpower.

Looking around, the space was filled with brown, fog-like monsters; each monster's body contained a twinkling blue glow.

Through the gaps between the monsters, he could see some of the environment; it seemed they were in a huge pit.

Relieved that his right eye's superpower was still functioning, Shi Chun was a bit frightened by how tense the situation was. Why hadn't his right eye's superpower activated earlier?

Now wasn't the time to delve into the reasons. The feared scenario had unfolded; those invisible monsters indeed launched another attack, aiming to use their invisibility for a sneak attack.

He immediately moved closer to Wu Jinliang, shouting loudly, "Hold on to the rock wall and don't move, don't get in the way, or I can't save you!"

The next moment, the knife in his hand was already chopping, bang, flesh burst from the void.

If the fight hadn't started, it would be fine, but once it began, it escalated to a frenzy. Explosions of bangs rose and fell; neither the attackers nor the defenders would back down.

Every time these invisible monsters were hit, they would temporarily reveal their forms or briefly show the injured part before quickly vanishing again.

Facing the flying chaos of flesh, Wu Jinliang sometimes closed his eyes, sometimes blinked, overwhelmed with anxiety, yet unable to lend a hand. He knew clearly that this wasn't a solution; Chun Tian's right eye ability wasn't sustainable, and besides, there were far too many monsters.

In fact, the monsters' offensive and defensive power wasn't very strong, or else the two of them wouldn't have been able to withstand them at all. The monsters' strength lay in their overwhelming numbers, and continuing like this would exhaust anyone.

He now understood why the old demon had dug its lair in such a narrow crevice; it was simply because the monsters couldn't squeeze through.

Shi Chun was well aware that this wasn't a solution either. The "No Demon Blade" consumed a lot of Mana, and he couldn't sustain it for a long period.

At this point, if they wanted to survive, they had to risk their lives. While wielding the "No Demon Blade" to slash wildly amidst the explosions, he shouted, "Jinliang, grab my leg and follow me!"

"Ah, go where?" Wu Jinliang exclaimed in alarm.

Shi Chun had no time to argue, he found a gap and shouted, "Go!"

With a push against the rock wall, he launched out again, the "No Demon Blade" in his hand clearing the way.

Wu Jinliang hurriedly followed suit, scrambling to wrap around one of Shi Chun's legs, and then realized he was weaving through the flying gore before free falling with Shi Chun, plummeting toward the abyss.

Bodies continued to fly apart en route as Shi Chun's blade furiously broke through.

In no time, the two had cut through the countless monsters that tried to block them and broke free from the bottom.

Shi Chun looked back and saw the monsters chasing down through the air, and shouted, "Jinliang, cover our retreat!"

"Ah?" Wu Jinliang was panicked by their unchecked descent toward the ground and worried whether they could decelerate in time, but awoke at the sound and quickly agreed, lifting his great sword to look back, he suddenly yelped, "I can't see anything!"

Shi Chun ignored him, his hand flipped, and he had already taken a pine cone-shaped Wind Scale from the Qiankun Bracelet in hand, casting spells into it and feeling for its quirks of usage.

Seeing this, Wu Jinliang understood and didn't waste words. Trusting his instincts, he focused on whatever was behind him, slashing wildly whenever something felt off.

Soon, thin scales scattered from the base of the cone in Shi Chun's hand, twinkling under the violet radiance that engulfed them.

Yet the fluttering scales were only following, unable to form an effective force.

Before long, Shi Chun's eyebrows twitched; while silently mastering the Magical Treasure in his hands, he locked his gaze on the ground. Indeed, he had spotted the surface of the abyss below.

To cast spells to slow down and drift?

He did not decelerate.

Wu Jinliang, unable to see the ground below, was not afraid either.

Just as they neared the ground, Shi Chun suddenly shouted, "Rise!"

The countless Wind Scales orbiting around them began to spin rapidly, and under the violet fiery glow, their reflections were stunningly beautiful.

As the spinning speed increased, they felt a buoyant force beginning to emerge, slowing their descent rapidly.

However, the monsters pouring down from above were not slowing, bringing them rapidly closer together.

As a tentacle swept toward them, the two fell sharply within the rotating scales, then arched upward in a steep climb, skimming close to a cliff face and ascending rapidly.

The myriad monsters that had plunged down also followed their arc, surging upward.

Wu Jinliang, blinded still, laughed with delight, "Hahaha, Chun Tian, you've got it, Master, you're brilliant!"

Illuminated, the two shone like a flying comet, weaving swiftly upward from the deep abyss.

With the Wind Scale in his grasp, Shi Chun deftly maneuvered around the attacking creatures, his handling of the flying artifact becoming ever more skilled.

"Woo woo woo..." The sound like that of a horn rang out once more.

Shi Chun turned his head sharply and saw a monster passing by not far away, smaller in size than the others. Its standout feature was not its smaller stature, but something inside.

While the other monsters gleamed with flashes of blue light within, that large beast's body pulsed with red hues, distinctly visible.

It seemed the horn was coming from that large beast's mouth.

Shi Chun could feel a sudden shift in the monsters' movements as if responding to the sound, all emerging from invisibility, seemingly aware that such abilities were useless against these two men, and no longer inclined to exert unnecessary effort.

He faintly recognized that this large beast could command the horde.

However, he wasn't currently concerned with confirming this; knowing that his eye's superpower was about to vanish, finding a suitable place to hide and securing a foothold for further plans was the most pressing matter.

Wu Jinliang, now fully capable of floating, still clung to Shi Chun's leg and hadn't let go. He too saw the monsters reappearing and, after hearing the horn call, let out his own howls, "Awoo, awoo..."

Excited and smug, the sarcasm was clear: Monsters, I'm leaving, what can you do about me?

Remarkably unfazed, he'd completely forgotten how harrowing the earlier situation was.

Once reaching its full flying speed, the Wind Scale was incredibly fast, far surpassing the monsters' flight, especially when unobstructed and at full dive, instantly darting like a beam of light from the huge pit and rising into the sky, then twisting and turning across the undulating landscape.

Shi Chun was surprised to find that the ground here, visible through his right eye, was substantial like the pit they'd seen earlier, made entirely of the same kind of rocks, without a hint of soil.

Those ethereal substances were still absent from his vision.

Conversely, his advantage lay in the fact that his right eye could see the terrain clearly in the darkness, whereas his left eye, other than the light emanating from their bodies and the phantom images cast by spinning Wind Scales, could see nothing at all.

Monsters lurking on the ground, however, seemed to spot them and one by one awakened and took flight, pursuing them.

Realizing something, Shi Chun instructed, "Jinliang, these monsters are sensitive to light; we can't shake them off like this. Remove all the Sandalwood Gold from our bodies and put it away."

"Ah, right, right." Wu Jinliang complied immediately, hastily stripping all the Sandalwood Gold from both himself and Shi Chun.
