Lighting Lanterns in the Mountains and Seas

Chapter 186: Responsibility

On the city wall, a group of domain masters who had set out later had already arrived before Shi Chun and his companions.

At this gathering, especially at the heavily guarded top of Weng City's wall, most people couldn't even get close, let alone ascend to the top of the wall, but these domain masters were clearly not included in those restrictions.

From atop the wall, they saw the factions' members on the open ground below, as well as Shi Chun and others emerging from the Xun Gate.

Below them, at the base of the wall, Young Master Nan, who had set out earlier, had just arrived along with an armored soldier, presumably pulled from somewhere.

The soldier presented a token to the city guards below for inspection; after some negotiations, they allowed passage and let Young Master Nan ascend the wall.

The domain masters on the wall, seeing Young Master Nan appear, did not seem surprised.

Young Master Nan kept nodding and bowing as he greeted the domain masters, adopting a rather humble posture.

The domain masters, to varying degrees, nodded slightly in acknowledgment; those who were more familiar even exchanged a few words.

Indeed, they all knew of Young Master Nan, aware that in terms of status and background, he was in some ways not inferior to them, perhaps even surpassing them. However, this was not the place for him to assert himself; without humility, he really should not be here.

They all understood his intentions for coming.

After some pleasantries, Young Master Nan quickly turned his attention to Shi Chun at the Xun Gate, his eyes brimming with anticipation and urgency.

"Brother Bai, over there," someone next to Bai Shuchuan suddenly elbowed him, motioning him to look towards the Xun Gate exit.

Following his gesture, Bai Shuchuan saw Shi Chun and the others who were getting their identities reverified and having their handcuffs cut.

What caught his eye was Xiang Laner. Although he had previously behaved frivolously towards Bian Weiyin, his real interest was in Xiang Laner. With Xiang Laner around, Bian Weiyin was out of his sight.

The friend who elbowed him knew him quite well.

Of course, the appearance of peripheral figures like Shi Chun and Wu Jinliang also surprised him and made him even more furious that these people were still alive.

He felt that everyone was deliberately avoiding him, and this wasn't even what angered him the most. What enraged him was missing out on excellent opportunities in the competition inside; it would not be so easy to target Xiang Laner once they were outside.

Just thinking about it infuriated him; he immediately strode over, naturally followed by a group of people.

Just as they had their handcuffs cut and Shi Chun and the others walked away massaging their wrists, they saw Bai Shuchuan leading a group pressing towards them, their intentions clear.

Those from Wukang Mountain shared a look, sensing that something was wrong, already feeling the accusatory tension.

Shi Chun quickly whispered to those nearby, "A small impatience ruins great plans. Once we get what we need, there will be time for settling scores. Don't worry, they wouldn't dare do anything to us here."

After finally securing so many Insect Extreme Crystals, just as they were about to achieve success and the rewards were within reach, he surely did not want to mess it up at the last moment.

Everyone understood; now was not the time for conflicts.

"What are you doing? Don't block the way, move aside!"

Just as Bai Shuchuan's group blocked Shi Chun and his people, they were yet to act when they were reprimanded by the guards at the front of Xun Gate.

Alright, no matter how dominant they were, it wasn't wise to make a scene here; they simply had to obey and make way.

The group of domain masters watching this scene from the city wall saw it was directed at Shi Chun and his group, but did not know what was happening.

They also wanted to understand what was going on. Wei Mo suddenly tilted his head and asked, "The assembly has already concluded, and everyone has left. Would it be alright if I went in to have a look?"

The commanding officer stationed there, who was with a group of domain masters, hurriedly pleaded with folded hands, "It's not over yet. According to the rules, outsiders are not allowed to make contact with them now. Lord Wei, please don't make things difficult for me. It's really inconvenient. It'll be over soon, so just wait a little longer. It's not like they can be kept here permanently. I believe they'll be released soon enough, just waiting for the order from above, right?"

Wei Mo pursed his lips and said no more.

Inside Weng City, after leaving the Xun Gate, Shi Chun and others were once again blocked by Bai Shuchuan's group.

Seeing Shi Chun standing in front at the forefront, and Bian Weiyin, on the contrary, shrinking behind him, Bai Shuchuan directly motioned with a tilt of his head to Shi Chun, "Move aside."

There was nothing to discuss with such riff-raff from the Land of Exile; naturally, he was looking for those led by Wukang Mountain.

Shi Chun, standing at the forefront, saw nothing inappropriate about his position; he had already done what was needed and did not plan to keep a low profile any longer.

Of course, he did not wish to conflict with the other party either, tilting his head towards the few behind him, he said, "Let's listen to Brother Bai and move aside."

They immediately walked away together, Wu Jinliang even glowered a few extra times at Bai Shuchuan, not forgetting the grudge against the big fool.

"Heh!" Bai Shuchuan was amused by their reaction and immediately shouted, "Bian Weiyin, stop right there. Do you think you can avoid this?"

Being called out, Bian Weiyin had no choice but to stop and turn around, feeling both helpless and self-reproachful, knowing he had to face the bitter consequences of his own actions.

Shi Chun also stopped, looked back, then circled back again, once again positioning himself in front of Bian Weiyin.

He was set on a tone of "endurance," it's true, but he had also assured Bian Weiyin through a communication talisman that he would handle the situation.

Watching the man standing protectively in front of her, Bian Weiyin's eyes momentarily softened. In that instant, she suddenly felt that being a woman wasn't so bad.

However, she quickly retracted that fleeting emotion and reached out to tug at Shi Chun's clothing on his back, signaling him to get out of the way.

Shi Chun stood still, calmly facing the situation.

The reason for his calmness was that he was not afraid of Bai Shuchuan. Before he entered the competition arena in the West Pole, he might have had some reservations, but now, having advanced his cultivation to the High Martial Realm, even if the opponent's cultivation was higher than his, he had nothing to fear.

Even if there were concerns, it was more about the forces behind the opponent than Bai Shuchuan himself.

It wasn't that he wanted to deliberately stand out, but he understood Bian Weiyin's concerns. Hence, he knew that Bian Weiyin was at a disadvantage in front of Bai Shuchuan. How could one play the game with their weaknesses exposed?

He could also comprehend not only Bian Weiyin's concerns but also those of Wukang Mountain, the most dominant sect on this territory.

For him, however, there were far fewer concerns. At worst, being banished from his sect was of little consequence, and whether Wukang Mountain could become friends with Jieyun Mountain in the future was none of his business.

So, if someone was deliberately causing trouble, Bian Weiyin couldn't control the situation, but he could.

The end was in sight, and he wouldn't let the situation spiral out of control.

"That guy again," Bai Shuchuan seethed upon seeing him, finding this contemptible character daring to act presumptuously in his presence. He immediately pointed at Shi Chun's nose and warned, "Didn't you hear when I told you to get lost?"

Hearing this, Xiang Laner looked at him with a somewhat peculiar gaze. After this major event, she naturally knew what Shi Chun had done. That fellow dared to offend both Mulan Qingqing and the forces from Xuan State, obviously bold and capable; would he fear someone trivial like Bai Shuchuan?

She really didn't understand what good it did for Bai Shuchuan to antagonize Shi Chun, stubbornly holding onto a grudge, he was truly making an enemy of himself.

She also knew that Bai Shuchuan harbored unspeakable thoughts towards her, but at this moment, she felt a bit of sympathy for Bai Shuchuan.

On the city wall, seeing Bai Shuchuan pointing at Shi Chun's nose, a group of Domain Masters perceived the hostility Bai Shuchuan held towards Shi Chun and the others.

A curious Domain Master asked, "Who's that finger-pointing guy?"

He was referring to Bai Shuchuan.

Wei Mo might not remember the attire of most sects from Sheng Province, but he was familiar with the clothing style of the top sect, having frequent interactions with them. Although Bai Shuchuan's clothes looked disheveled, Wei Mo recognized him and frowned.

Shi Chun himself showed no anger, calmly responded, "Now, I am the leader of Wukang Mountain. Are you looking for a woman, or do you have some business to discuss with Wukang Mountain?"

Bai Shuchuan had both needs, but seeking a woman wasn't something he could openly admit to, so he angrily retorted, "Who do you think you are? Is Wukang Mountain's representation up to you? Boy, I advise you not to seek discomfort!"

Shi Chun: "Who represents Wukang Mountain is for Wukang Mountain to decide."

The implication was that it was not for him to determine.

These politely phrased words completely enraged Bai Shuchuan. He poked his finger at Shi Chun's chest, sneering, "So it turns out you're the one who disregards the interests of Sheng Province and leads Wukang Mountain to desertion during battle?"

Shi Chun nodded affirmatively, "Yes, it's me."

He admitted it openly, completely unconcerned.

"Heh heh." Wu Jinliang couldn't help but laugh, mocking the other's childishness and his scare tactics suited for frightening children.

Bai Shuchuan coughed, baffled by such unscrupulous defiance. To have such a heavy accusation flung at him and still daring to take it upon himself was utterly speechless for Bai; he could not take action here and then pointed at Wu Jinliang, "Big fool, keep laughing, your time to cry will come."

Then he pointed at Bian Weiyin, who was hiding behind someone, with a look that promised retribution, and before leaving, he gave Xiang Laner a few more glances.

Being scolded and personally attacked, Wu Jinliang suddenly couldn't laugh, his face clouding over as he watched Bai Shuchuan walk away. It took a while before he took a deep breath and said, "Chun Tian, I want a battle to the death with him!"

Shi Chun scoffed briefly and turned around to tease, "You think you won't get the chance? With all the outcry over Youxia Mountain's little sister, it's hard to keep wraps on, and he'll soon learn who was behind it."

Reminded by this, Wu Jinliang's mouth twitched, and he muttered under his breath, "The forces of Xuan State are really useless, they couldn't even kill him."

Xiang Laner, being the insulted "little sister," looked on demurely.

Bian Weiyin, however, didn't understand the implication, her expression filled with deep worry, concerned that Wukang Mountain's actions would lead to conflict with Jieyun Mountain.

On the city wall, Chi Rang, a Domain Master from Xuan State, pulled out a talisman to check a message, learning that forces led by Su Yuan Sect had already emerged from another Xun Gate.

He put away the talisman with no intention of leaving the scene.

To him, going there was no longer crucial. The bulk of the Extreme Crystals was here, and it was most important to ascertain under which state's name these Extreme Crystals were registered.

The presence of so many Domain Masters, some even harboring hopes of unexpected fortunes, and surely he was among them.

At this moment, forces led by Su Yuan Sect were congested at the Xun Gate exit, causing a temporary blockade as the following forces found it difficult to proceed, the pace of cutting through handcuffs was not that fast, and since they came back in groups, it created a temporary jam.

This was all minor.

Similarly stuck at the gate was Mulan Qingqing, dressed in men's clothes. Without her usual white garment, and lacking any privileges, she slowly queued up, looking up at the brightly lit city walls. Having suddenly shifted from a daytime world to a nighttime world, her face filled with melancholy.
