Lighting Lanterns in the Mountains and Seas

Chapter 31: An Opportunity to Get Rich

In fact, it was their manipulation that had led Weikang to his present plight; those cunning friends who misled Weikang had been arranged by them, originally intending to gradually drag the Wu Kang Mountain Sect Master into the trouble through Weikang and then take control of Wu Kang Mountain.

Unexpectedly, Bian Jixiong was very decisive and expelled his own son from the Sect, even severing the father-son relationship, which frustrated their plans.

However, they firmly believed that the father-son relationship was not so easily completely severed, especially since Bian Jixiong's wife was still around, and she was the boy's birth mother, so they adapted their plans and pushed along another path.

Seeing her determination, Feng Chi sighed lightly, "I'm just worried about your current status as the Holy Daughter, how could Bian Jixiong tolerate his son marrying a woman of ill repute? It might be difficult for you once you go there."

"Who said I was going to marry?" Xiang Laner put down her brush, stood up, and faced her, saying, "Begin."

With a bitter smile, Feng Chi apologized, "Holy Daughter, I'm going to have to offend you."

With permission granted, she swung the whip in her hand, lashing repeatedly at Xiang Laner. The blows left her hair disheveled and her face marked by the whip, clearly in disarray before she finally stopped.

Xiang Laner turned to face the mirror, inspected herself, and nodded slightly, "Later, you go down and scold him first. When you call people to drive him away, I'll rush out and stand in front of him. I will threaten with the dagger, declaring that I will not settle for anyone but him."

Feng Chi put down the whip and said, "Of course I won't agree easily and will continue to advise you to compare Weikang and Lv Taizhen, calling you muddled and such."

Xiang Laner spoke, "Easy to find priceless treasures, hard to find a lover; if I die, let alone four hundred fifty thousand, you won't get a single grain of golden sand… That should be about enough."

Feng Chi nodded, "Yes, seeing you threaten with death, I will have no choice but to accept the four hundred fifty thousand and let you go. Should we go down now?"

Xiang Laner, however, sat back down in front of the mirror and said, "Let him despair a bit more; we can't allow him to get it too easily."

Feng Chi laughed softly, "Exactly, make him appreciate its value by knowing it hasn't come easy."

Downstairs, Wu Jinliang's interest in the commotion at the door began to fade, his fervent gaze now turning to the girls at the railing of the building.

As he was about to leave and enter the Cloud Building, a familiar laugh erupted, "I told you, the big guy would definitely head here first as soon as he arrived; you see, it's exactly right, spot on."

The voice was indeed familiar. Shi Chun and Wu Jinliang quickly looked around, only to see two men dressed like servants, wearing soft hats, standing on a set of steps and waving at them cheerfully, "Master, Jinliang, this way."

The two brightened up as the men were none other, having left the East Nine Plain just a month ago.

They appeared much older than Shi Chun, indeed quite a bit older, both in their forties.

The one with the longer face was called Dong, his rolling eyeballs revealing a cunning nature.

The broader-faced one was called Da Shitou, derived from another called Shitou from the East Nine Plain, who was younger; Da Shitou, true to his name, looked much steadier.

Encountering old acquaintances here, Shi Chun and the others excitedly left the crowd.

Outside the crowd, Dong and Da Shitou even bowed to Shi Chun in a very formal manner, uniformly and neatly shouting, "Greetings to the Master."

There was a sense of experienced spectacle.

Clicking their tongues, Shi Chun and Wu Jinliang assessed them up and down, seeing that they looked prosperous and had evidently put on weight and whitened, obviously living the good life.

But Shi Chun and company quickly gasped in surprise, for the silver thread embroidered on their clothing bore a "Bowang" character; the two were quite familiar with this uniform—wasn't this the attire of the Bowang Building?

Wu Jinliang pointed to the characters on their collars, in shock, "You?"

Da Shitou smiled, "After leaving, luck was on our side. We met the lady boss who recommended us for jobs in the Bowang Building. Honestly, we have to thank the Master for our fortune..." Suddenly he halted because Dong quietly tugged at his garment from behind.

It was too late to hide it now. Wu Jinliang's eyebrows raised, and the large knife he leaned on slowly rose, he sneered coldly, "I wondered how the lady boss knew about me calling out for my mom everywhere, so it was you two beasts who betrayed me!"

With that, he swung his knife.

The two weren't ones to just accept their fate and immediately sprang away, prompting Wu Jinliang to chase them with his knife, a sight that drew quite some attention. To dare start a fight here?

Group living places generally have rules.

"Wu Jinliang, you can't fight here, or you'll get caught, Master, stop him quickly..." Dong ran and cried out as he did.

Fortunately, the knife in Wu Jinliang's hand was indeed heavy, and it was indeed difficult to chase after people.

Shi Chun still had matters to discuss with those two, so he immediately spoke up to stop him: "Wu Jinliang, there's important business."

With those words, Wu Jinliang then stopped, stuck his knife into the ground, and pointing at the two men, cursed, "Heartless beasts, first, compensate me and Chun Tian with a set of clothes."

Da Shitou immediately agreed, "We'll compensate."

Dong nodded repeatedly, "Definitely compensate, and invite you for a good meal as well."

Shi Chun waved the two men over and asked, "We came here; did the delivery person from the Bowan Building tell you?"

Dong: "Yes, the leader, Che Si, told us casually when he saw us, and as soon as we heard, we took leave immediately to find you. Master, I'm so glad to finally see you," he said, his eyes glistening with moisture.

The smile on Da Shitou's face was also bittersweet as he emphatically nodded, clearly very happy.

As excited as they were, when it came time to betray their brothers, there was no hesitation.

Shi Chun knew their nature well and asked, "What about the others?"

Both men shook their heads, and Da Shitou said, "Everyone has gone to find their own paths, who knows where. You said, haven't we gotten used to brawling? Getting together after coming out, with more people, we can't help but cause trouble. Didn't you tell everyone to find proper work and live peacefully their whole lives? Everyone has dispersed."

Thinking of the faces and laughter of that bunch, an indignant Wu Jinliang also fell silent.

Letting out a sigh, Shi Chun soon composed himself and asked the two, "There's a chance to make a fortune, do you want in on the share?"

At the mention of making money, everyone, including Wu Jinliang, perked up their ears and instinctively huddled closer in their old habit to hear what the Master had to say.

"I need forty thousand gold, right now, immediately. Can you manage to get it for me quickly?"

Da Shitou said, "We don't have that much money, what do you need so much money for?"

Shi Chun: "Don't worry about that, just tell me if you can get it. I guarantee I'll double it back to you within three days, maybe even today."

The three of them had no doubt about his ability to scrounge things up and trusted his promise.

Dong told Da Shitou, "Then we can only borrow it from the building."

Da Shitou frowned and said, "The building gives us three hundred gold a month, added up it's barely over seven thousand gold for a year, can we really advance five or six years' worth?"

"I have a way we might try." Dong said, and dragging Da Shitou with him, he instructed Shi Chun as they left, "Master, wait for us here, we'll be right back."

Pleased, Shi Chun gave him a thumbs up.

Wu Jinliang muttered beside him, "Why do I feel like Dong's cheerfulness is a bit abnormal?"

Shi Chun: "There is something off. Never mind that, as long as we get the money first. We're still short ten thousand, let's both chip in, you give me four thousand."

Five thousand? Wu Jinliang instantly reacted, turned his head towards a group of people, pointed there, and with widened eyes exclaimed, "You're not going to help him gather that five thousand, right? That, you're chasing after ghost's wealth. Didn't you hear them say? Expelled from the Sect, no ability to repay the money, I won't give." He clutched his bundle tightly.

Tired of dealing with him, Shi Chun went to sit down on a stone platform nearby to rest.

It dawned sharply on Wu Jinliang that if he gave four thousand, there would remain a shortfall of six thousand. This meant that Chun Tian would be cleaning out his own savings. The man was not accustomed to loss, so he approached trying to find conversation, "Didn't you hear them? Lv Taizhen is not someone easy to mess with, fighting over a woman with him will be trouble."

Shi Chun shifted his legs, resting one on the other, and asked with curiosity, "Why would I snatch his woman, knowing he's trouble? Who does that? He wants women, I want money. He buys people from the Cloud Building for five hundred thousand, I get people out of the Cloud Building and sell them to him for two hundred thousand, who he buys from doesn't matter, does it?"
