Lighting Lanterns in the Mountains and Seas

Chapter 648: Does It Matter or Not

Ultimately, nothing significant could be found in the belongings of either Huang Ye or Lou Xiu to further the investigation.

To dig deeper, we must find the murderer.

Who could it be? Only the Phoenix Clan truly understands the situation on the Divine Mountain. East Victory's involvement is limited, and they can only allow the Phoenix Clan to investigate themselves.

East Victory's secret agents suspected Feng Xi at first but later thought it unlikely. If Feng Xi were controlling the Phoenix Clan to act treacherously, it wouldn't have been possible to capture Huang Ye and Lou Xiu here. Besides, Huang Ye's sudden escape earlier clearly indicated an insider had informed him.

These findings were reported truthfully by the leader of East Victory's secret agents when he returned to the East Victory Royal Court with the suspects' corpses and belongings, to meet with Right Minister Hou Jiahuan and those by the Queen's side.

After the leader left, Jiahuan circled the two exposed demon cultivator corpses, personally investigating the wounds, and ultimately focused on those Soul Capturing Bags.

An oval-faced palace-dressed woman spoke slowly: "With both suspects' cultivation restrained, killing them was as easy as pie. However, the entire Divine Mountain was on high alert, making it difficult to approach the prison, let alone break in and silence them while also killing the guards. It was likely internal to the Phoenix Clan, possibly even by their higher-ups."

Another palace-dressed woman with an egg-shaped face, holding a Jade Scroll with notes, asked, "Does that mean what happened in the Queen's room wasn't done by Shi Chun?"

Jiahuan flipped through a Soul Capturing Bag, "Whether or not he did it doesn't matter. What's important is, what is the Demon Path trying to achieve by doing this?"

The suspects were silenced, and the trail was severed. No one could provide any answers...

The moon cast its gentle glow, the ancient pavilions were brightly lit. A red-clothed woman enjoying such an atmosphere while reading on a deck chair was disturbed by the hurried report of Lan.

"They're all dead?"

The red-clothed woman, upon hearing the report, suddenly put down her book and sat up, questioning.

Both Huang Ye and Lou Xiu were individuals Shi Chun had previously told her to monitor.

Lan, feeling helpless, explained, "Upon investigation after the fact, it was discovered that the East Victory Royal Court's secret agents negotiated with the Phoenix Clan in private and acted suddenly. Those we had monitoring them couldn't react in time. Huang Ye's identity was exposed, undoubtedly a member of the Demon Path. After the two were captured, East Victory personnel wanted to take them away. Feng Xi wanted to interrogate them first. During the stalemate, someone took the opportunity to silence them right under their noses."

The red-clothed woman got up, barefoot, pacing back and forth, pondering and murmuring, "The two people I had you monitor were silenced. The Mo Shiliu I had you capture twice escaped despite a group effort. Nothing you handle recently seems to be getting done."

Hearing this, Lan wanted to speak but held back. Her words of defense swallowed; she felt a sense of injustice. Not to mention Mo Shiliu, who escaped twice from Sword Saint Fu Que's grasp, that couldn't possibly be simple...

In the dim prison, Shi Chun, whose mana was restricted, couldn't meditate and regulate his breathing, so he sat against the corner of the wall to pass the time, oblivious to the outside world's passing days.

After being detained for an unknown number of days, drifting between half-asleep and half-awake, he suddenly felt a breeze on his face.

Where could the wind come from inside the prison? Shi Chun suddenly awoke, and upon opening his eyes, saw a tall, black-cloaked and masked figure standing outside the cell, whose attire and height were very familiar. It was clearly Yu Xuanbing.

But this was the heavily guarded cell where East Victory Royal Court detained serious criminals. How did Yu Xuanbing get in?

He climbed up, walked to the front of the cell hesitantly, and said, "You..."

The figure softly said, "Qingqiu has already been visited."

This voice and the matter of discussion made Shi Chun sure it was indeed Yu Xuanbing. Yet, he was even more surprised and whispered, "How did you get in?"

Yu Xuanbing replied, "I have my ways."

Still curious, Shi Chun asked, "How did you know I was detained here?"

"There aren't that many places that detain people here," Yu Xuanbing said, glancing around, "It's still the same as eight hundred years ago."

Shi Chun immediately understood. Clearly, this wasn't Yu Xuanbing's first visit here; he must have carried out some stealth action eight hundred years ago.

Although Yu Xuanbing wouldn't elaborate, Shi Chun asked about the main concern, "Were the two captured people dealt with?"

Yu Xuanbing replied, "They weren't captured. When they were caught on the Divine Mountain and there seemed to be an opportunity, fearing trouble if they were brought here and encountered real experts, I dealt with them locally. Anyway, it didn't disrupt your instructions."

Shi Chun was somewhat bewildered; capturing them there and assassinating them on the spot?

The difficulty of the task, he thought, puzzled about how it was accomplished, questioned further, "You weren't exposed?"

Yu Xuanbing assured, "No, don't worry; everyone who saw me is dead. In the future, anyone who reveals that I came from the Netherworld will die as well."

The last sentence clearly implied a threat.

Shi Chun couldn't control his facial expressions, grinning to show his teeth. Today he truly experienced the prowess of the Cultivation World's foremost assassin; the reputation was well-deserved.

At the same time, he felt a bit regretful, confirmed by Huang Ye's death.

It was indeed a shame that the Demonic Qi within Huang Ye was so bountiful. Originally planning to enjoy it himself until the red-clothed woman mentioned his involvement in the Queen's room, he realized he had gone too far. To survive, he had to abandon it as a pawn.

After all, there are many others in the Demon Path, but he only had one life.

To survive, he again confirmed, "The items I had you place in Huang Ye's room, did you hide them?"

Yu Xuanbing answered, "I didn't hide them. Seeing an opportunity, I put them into his Qiankun Bag. This should be more credible than hiding them in his room as a setup, right?"
