Supreme Summoner Overlord: Rise of the Endless Legion

Chapter 242: Eels in the Rubble (2)

Reidar raised his wand. "Storm-Wyrm's Ire."

The spell manifested as a Draconic maw of condensed lightning. It tore through the air and struck the serpent that was struggling against the Boulderback Behemoth.

The lightning then arced to the nearest serpent and finally to the third one wrestling the second Behemoth. All three creatures convulsed as electricity coursed through their bodies.

The paralysis lasted only seconds, but it was enough.

The Spectral Legion converged on the first serpent. A dozen blades struck while the creature was stunned. In the end, the creature got its neck severed, and its head fell away as death took it.

The first Boulderback seized the moment. Still grappling the serpent, it tightened its immense grip. Cracking scales and shattering bone echoed through the street as it crushed the life from the creature. The serpent went limp in its grasp.

The third serpent recovered from the paralysis and tried to flee, wings beating desperately as it gained altitude. The Elite Rift-Sprites, their previous target destroyed, focused their fire alongside the rest of the other creatures. Meanwhile, one of the behemoths moved to Reidar's position to guard him against sudden attacks.

A volley of elemental energy blasted the creature's wing membrane. The serpent faltered, its flight becoming an uncontrolled spiral as it lost altitude.

One of the Twin Boulderback Behemoths was waiting below. It caught the falling serpent in both hands and crushed it against the ground. Stone grinding on scales caused a crucial tear. The snake twitched and then stopped moving.

Silence returned to the area. Reidar's summons reformed around him. The Spectral Legion moved into a protective formation, reduced in number but still functional. The others did the same, and the initial formation was restored. In the meantime, Reidar was looking at the notifications that were flooding his vision.

Reidar dismissed the notifications. Five levels in one fight. Two proficiencies developed. The gap between him and Aaron had narrowed, even if only slightly. Though, combat proficiency grew into something he couldn't use at his maximum, and that was because it was a proficiency tiered for melee warriors.

Warrior's Dominion was a proficiency clearly forged for those who met their enemies blade-to-blade. Its primary benefits were useless to a summoner like Reidar.

He never wielded a blade, and his survival depended on mana shields and summon positioning, not acrobatic evasion. The skill's essence was mismatched because it was designed for warriors rather than for architects of armies.

However, the proficiency itself was not a total loss. The proficiency evolution proved his growing mastery over the chaos of battle.

The true value for a summoner lay not in the skill's special bonuses, but in the foundational combat awareness it represented.

Reading the battlefield like an open book was the key part. This enhanced perception assisted him in anticipating enemy movements and seeing the flow of a fight before it happened.

It made his battle orders more precise and his positioning more strategic. He couldn't exploit a foe's weak spot with a sword, but he could direct a Spectral Knight to strike there with flawless timing.

The proficiency made him a better commander, even if it didn't make him a better warrior.

He looked toward the east, where Aaron continued his journey through the ruins. The Vorathid Foragers still tracked him, and it was just a matter of time before he would finally find out what was really going on inside the city.
