Medical Sage

Chapter 188: Is It Really Cancer?

A tumor is a catastrophic diagnosis for any ordinary person, let alone one growing inside the brain. It is the most complex region of the human body; even with modern medicine, the brain remains an incredible mystery.

As the director of neurology at a top private hospital in Hong Kong, Wang Chenghua was acutely aware of what this meant. His brow furrowed, his expression grave. If the patient were an ordinary person or someone of lesser status, it might have been easier. But the one with the brain tumor was none other than the young master of the Chen family. How could he possibly break such news?

"Director Wang, is it really a tumor? Do I really have a tumor in my brain?" Seeing the director's grim, hesitant expression, Chen Hao's heart skipped a beat. Dressed in loose, casual clothes, his breathing grew ragged, and his face turned pale. The joints of his fingers turned white as he clenched his fists.

A tumor? Cancer? In the face of such terrifying words, how many people could remain calm and composed? He was only in his twenties, in the prime of his life. A brain tumor… how is this possible!?

"What nonsense are you talking about? It can't be! It can't be a tumor!" Dong Shuxian slapped her son on the back, her own face paling as she muttered to herself. Her eyes reddened, and she was on the verge of tears. She only had one son! She hadn't even held a grandchild yet. How could her son possibly have a tumor, have cancer? No! This is absolutely impossible! Absolutely impossible!

"Mom, what are you doing?"

Chen Hao, the patient himself, was actually a bit more composed than his mother. Even so, he subconsciously clenched the hem of his clothes, trying to remain calm. He looked at Director Wang Chenghua, his lips quivering. "Director Wang," he stammered, "please, just tell us straight. The way you're acting is just making us more anxious."

Clearly, he just wanted to know what was happening inside his brain. A tumor? Cancer? He had to know.

"Yes, Director Wang, please just tell us," Dong Shuxian said, taking a deep breath and forcing herself to calm down. Yet her fingernails, trembling, were already digging into the flesh of her palms. After all, Chen Hao was her only son, the sole treasure of her life. But now, he might have a brain tumor, might have cancer. If it was true, what would she do? How could she go on living? She couldn't bear to think about it.

"Sigh… In that case, Madam Chen, Young Master Chen, you must prepare yourselves," Director Wang said, taking a deep breath. "Based on the examination results and discussions with several experts from our neurology department, we can preliminarily conclude that it is a tumor. Young Master Chen has a tumor in his brain. Moreover, it is already showing signs of spreading."

"What? It's already spreading!?" Chen Hao was stunned, the fragile composure he had maintained instantly shattering. As a young man with access to more information, he knew exactly what "spreading" meant.

Generally, tumors were either benign or malignant. The former, while frightening, could often be cured with modern medicine. But the latter, a malignant tumor, was the truly terrifying and hopeless kind of cancer, especially once the cells began to spread. The mortality rate was as high as ninety-nine percent. At best, treatment could only prolong one's life by a little, which was ultimately meaningless.

At that thought, Chen Hao's face turned deathly white. He began to tremble uncontrollably, no longer able to remain calm. "Then, Director Wang," he asked, his voice shaking, "what are my chances of being cured?"

What are his chances of being cured?

Director Wang gave a wry, internal smile and offered a noncommittal response. "I can't say for certain right now. But if Young Master Chen is willing to stay in our hospital for treatment, I guarantee that our medical team will do everything in our power to—"

His words were obviously empty platitudes. To Chen Hao, they landed like a bolt from the blue, draining him of all strength. His face went ashen, and he nearly collapsed.

"Let's go! Come with me!" Just then, Dong Shuxian, her eyes red-rimmed, abruptly cut the director off. She grabbed her dazed, stupefied son and pulled him toward the exit.

"Madam Chen, Young Master Chen…" Director Wang instinctively moved to stop them but immediately checked the absurd impulse.

What a joke. He's the young master of the prestigious Hong Kong Chen family. If he could be cured, that would be one thing. But if he couldn't, he'd be a complete hot potato. It's better to stay away if possible!

A moment later, Dong Shuxian had pulled Chen Hao out of the top private hospital.

"Mom, don't be like this. I'm fine, really. Don't worry about me." Seeing his mother's strange behavior and the tear tracks on her cheeks, Chen Hao, though despairing, felt a surge of panic. He was worried she wouldn't be able to accept the truth, which would surely lead to problems.

"My son, let me ask you," Dong Shuxian said, her tone suddenly grave. "Do you remember that day at the airport? Did Mr. Chen ask you about your headaches?" She had suddenly recalled their encounter.

"Mr. Chen? Which Mr. Chen? Wait, are you talking about that young man my age?" Chen Hao paused, and then a spark of light flared in his eyes.

That's right. At the airport, when he first met Chen Fei, the man had specifically warned him about his headaches, but he had dismissed it at the time. Now that his mother brought it up, the memory came rushing back, sending a jolt through his entire body.

Could it be? Did Mr. Chen see it back then? Did he realize my headaches were because of a tumor in my brain?

But… but that's impossible, right? He just gave me a casual glance, without any scientific instruments. How could he diagnose a brain tumor just like that? Isn't that too much of an exaggeration? It sounds like a joke!

"There are some things your father has kept from you," Dong Shuxian said slowly, seeing her son's shocked expression. "But you grew up in this family. You must have observed things over the years, guessed some of it. Our Chen family of Macau is no ordinary family."

"And that Mr. Chen, much like our Hong Kong Chen family, is no ordinary person. He possesses unimaginably terrifying power and medical skills that border on the supernatural! When he warned you back then, he had most likely already discovered the abnormality in your brain. But we, mother and son, were blind and didn't take his words seriously," she said, her voice thick with self-reproach.

Her son didn't know Chen Fei's true identity or influence, but she knew it all too well. This was a man so formidable he dared to confront the Hong Kong Black Market! Even her own father and elder brother treated him with respect and awe. He was truly an extraordinary figure in the city. Yet she, Dong Shuxian, had been so blind, so foolish as to ignore his words. Ah, I must have been blind!

As Dong Shuxian berated herself, Chen Hao felt like a drowning man grasping a lifeline. His eyes suddenly lit up as he stared blankly at his mother. "Then… Mom… if you're saying Mr. Chen could tell I had a brain tumor just by looking at me… do you think it's possible he could cure me?"

"If Mr. Chen is willing to help, I believe you could be cured even if it is cancer. But the problem is… we were the ones who were blind and ignored his kindness back then," Dong Shuxian said, her expression a mixture of hesitation and worry.

She knew Chen Fei's medical skills were beyond her comprehension; he was so formidable he could be called a Divine Doctor. If he were willing to help, she was certain he could cure her son, even from cancer. But the problem was that he had already kindly warned them, and they had arrogantly dismissed his concern. Now that they had a diagnosis, they came crawling back. After being so picky, did they really think he was obligated to treat them?

"Mom, don't tell me that with the status of our Hong Kong Chen family, we don't even have the qualifications to ask him to see me just once?" Chen Hao said, stunned and indignant. Their Chen family was one of the illustrious Hong Kong's Five Great Tycoon Families, and his father was the acting head. With such a lofty and unparalleled status, were they really not qualified to request a single consultation? He can't be *that* important, can he?

"Shut up!"

Dong Shuxian's expression changed drastically. She scolded him in a harsh, severe tone, "Xiao Hao, you listen to me! From this night on, you will never let such words pass your lips again! Otherwise, the consequences will be catastrophic! Not even your dad could save you!"

By now, she understood just how terrifying Chen Fei's power was. She was certain that not only her son, Chen Hao, but even her husband, Chen Yaoyang—the acting head of the Hong Kong Chen family—would be abandoned without a second thought if he ever truly crossed that man.

Yes, abandoned! Whether it was the Hong Kong Chen family or her own Dong family, they would not hesitate for a second.

Because that man, Chen Fei, truly had the standing to command such a response.

At this thought, her expression grew even more frantic. She had to stamp out the improper thoughts taking root in her son's mind.

"Xiao Hao, you must remember this now. If you want him to treat you, you must go to him with utmost humility and sincerity! Even if he refuses because of your past disrespect, you absolutely cannot harbor any resentment. Otherwise, you will bring ruin upon yourself, your father, and this entire family!" she said.

HISS.

Chen Hao sucked in a sharp breath, his face filled with utter shock. He had often heard his parents mention that this Mr. Chen was powerful, his status unfathomable, but he never had a concrete idea of just how deep it went. Now, hearing these earth-shattering words from his own mother, he trembled, a chill creeping up his spine.

He knew she would never joke about something like this or say it just to scare him. So… could it all be true?

His body began to shake uncontrollably, and his lips turned a shade of blue.
