I Can See Health Bars in Real Life

Chapter 6: Urban Legend... and Footage Review (Part 2)

Listening to the astonished crowd around him, Director of the Mediterranean couldn't help but wipe away a cold sweat.

Continuing like this wasn't the solution; arguing here in the lobby would only make matters worse, and it might even end up on the news. These things, similar to hospital disputes, are always so troublesome. Whether the hospital is at fault or not, once it gets big, it's always a headache.

"Fine, I want to check the surveillance footage!" The girl nodded fiercely, decisively making her demand.

Although there had been some unpleasantness previously, the young couple's relationship was still good enough that they wouldn't quibble over this. She also knew her boyfriend's character very well, based on his usual behavior, and under normal circumstances, she was sure he wouldn't sneak off to the morgue and get locked up there.

That's why she was convinced it was the hospital's problem and insisted on getting an explanation.

"This... this..."

Director of the Mediterranean's expression became somewhat unpleasant.

"That's right! Check the surveillance! We want to see the surveillance footage!"

"Yes, we want to see the surveillance..."

At this moment, someone in the crowd voiced out, stirring up others' emotions, and the crowd began to echo in agreement. Some people were just there for the spectacle, while others thought that with such an outrageous incident, the hospital must be at fault, so they voiced their support for the young couple.

...

Ten minutes later.

"This is today's surveillance footage. Look, this is the point when you had just entered the hospital. We can start watching from here, right..."

In the surveillance room, hospital staff sat in front of the computer with a sigh, pulling up the corresponding time for today's surveillance footage. Behind him was a large group of people, centered around the young couple, with Director of the Mediterranean and other hospital staff around them.

The hospital eventually couldn't withstand the pressure and agreed to allow the inspection of the surveillance footage, but only for the individuals involved. Those who just wanted to watch the spectacle were declined entry on the grounds that they weren't involved. After all, it wasn't their business to begin with.

Director of the Mediterranean sighed, glancing around him, unable to help feeling regretful for his bad luck today.

However, with such a major mishap, the surveillance indeed needed to be checked. The responsibility lies where it should. If it weren't checked, then the blame would certainly fall on the hospital. Given that any choice would lead to equally bad outcomes, he could only try to minimize the impact, at least preventing constant arguing in the lobby.

"...You see, about ten minutes later, Mr. Chen left the ward and sat outside... it started from here. He glanced over there, and then suddenly walked over..." The monitoring personnel pointed at the image on the screen.

Everyone could see it clearly. In the surveillance, Chen Xinda walked out of the ward and leaned against the corner of the wall. Due to the distance and resolution of the camera, his specific expression couldn't be seen, but his behavior was quite direct and obvious.

A few seconds later in the video, the man looked around as if he were moving his neck, but then suddenly froze, and after a slight pause, began to slowly step in the direction of his gaze.

— His movements seemed strange, as if he were mesmerized by something.

— At this point, apart from the parties involved, no one had yet realized there was an issue.

"Did you see something at that time, Mr. Chen? The camera didn't capture what was on that side..." the monitoring personnel asked.

"I... I don't know..." Chen Xinda replied, his face pale, his voice trembling. He stared intently at himself in the footage, growing increasingly terrified and alarmed. What was he thinking at that time? Looking back now only filled him with fear.

He didn't even know how to explain what he saw. On one hand, he was unsure himself; on the other hand, his true thoughts at the time were unspeakable. It wouldn't be right to say he was attracted to someone of the same gender... would it?

This person says they don't know?

The crowd exchanged strange glances with one another, while his girlfriend looked at him with some concern.

The surveillance continued, and the technician quickly found the next related footage: "Here is the next floor. Mr. Chen, you looked at the stairs and continued following them down. It seemed very purposeful, but the cameras still didn't capture anything."

"..."

"..."

Silence fell. No one spoke, and the person accelerated their actions. The subsequent recorded footages were rather brief, but they mostly displayed similar scenes. The man in the footage seemed to be following something the camera didn't capture, heading all the way down, eventually unwittingly reaching the third basement floor.

The surroundings were void of other passersby. The corridor became desolate and silent.

Everyone held their breath, waiting for the upcoming scene.

"Mr. Chen is still like this, continuing towards the direction of the Morgue... we can see that this whole process was by his own volition, without any misleading or suggestions from our hospital, right?" The technician's tone relaxed, while many people around also visibly breathed a sigh of relief.

The girl opened her mouth, unsure of what to say, while Chen Xinda, whom she was supporting, had his pupils contract, restraining his breath, and stared hard at the surveillance screen.

Nothing was captured on the footage, so it was indeed this kind of situation! It meant that what he saw might not have been a person at all! It was too bizarre!
