Chapter 156: Hunt to Rule

This is indeed the sound of a Screamer.

The sound comes from a distance.

Su Changxing estimated that someone must have provoked the Screamer, but it's unclear whether it was a Hunter or someone else.

After discovering the presence of a Screamer ahead, he decisively switched to another shop and continued forward.

Under normal circumstances, he could only flee in panic when faced with a Screamer, but in a sleep state, with the bonus from the position of Dreamer, he might still have a chance to confront it.

Navigating through alleys and streets, where darkness and moonlight intertwine, Su Changxing dodged a Zombie pouncing at him with a sidestep, surveying his surroundings, his heartbeat slightly accelerating.

He felt something amiss, not because of the Zombies, but because of something else, though he couldn't pinpoint exactly what.

A voice in his head said, "Kid, I reckon you might have been marked by some means, which is why you're feeling this way."

Tailor?

Su Changxing instantly thought of last night's scene, where threads danced in the air as the Tailor died.

Could it be his doing?

Not at peace even in death.

Although the situation wasn't certain yet, Su Changxing's sense of alertness was fully heightened. He was now very close to the target, the Mysterious Shop, only a few streets away, but the closer he got, the more pronounced his unease became.

"Swish, swish, swish~"

Several arrows shot from the side above, mingling with the darkness, stirring the wind, four or five arrows stacked in a pinwheel pattern, completely blocking his escape space.

With a deft sidestep, Su Changxing swung his knife backhandedly to cut down two arrows, perfectly evading the attack, then looked in the direction from which the arrows flew, seeing several figures standing by the window on a nearby building floor.

Without hesitation, he crouched down, hiding behind a dilapidated car, and pulled out the Shadow Bow from his back, firing an arrow in return.

The arrow traced a smooth arc in the air, heading toward the window.

At a considerable distance, they hadn't seen Su Changxing's actions clearly, nor the trajectory of the flying arrow.

Hit.

The arrow struck one of them in the chest.

Without hesitation, Su Changxing turned and ran in another direction. These people must be Hunters, for ordinary people wouldn't shoot at others randomly, nor possess such skill in shooting.

"Inform the others; we've located the top prey. He's heading towards area number twelve in the south."

A man with disheveled hair, holding a longbow and dressed in leather armor, said while watching Su Changxing moving amidst the Zombies.

Another person was checking the condition of an injured man lying on the ground with an arrow in his chest, saying,

"It's a terrifying lethality; luckily it missed the vital parts, otherwise it would've been troublesome."

Looking at the injured man on the ground, they were extremely cautious, aware that this human navigating the Otherworld, possibly killed their leader.

It's known that their leader was recognized as a strong figure, claimed to be invincible below the level of a Powerful Ability User, and indeed, he was.

But last night, he suddenly died a violent death.

No one had anticipated this, causing internal riots within their ranks, and today's hunt stemmed from this upheaval.

Whoever kills this Otherworld human will become the new leader of the organization and the new ruler.

Su Changxing confirmed the Hunters could deduce his location, although not precisely, just a general area.

In a blink of an eye, he seemed to see invisible threads spreading around him, extending in all directions.

[Revenge Red Line: Your location has been fully exposed, duration: half a day]

"True Knowledge" finally provided some information, confirming it was due to the Tailor. It's likely all the Hunters in this area have their eyes on him.

Very dangerous, but fortunately, he wasn't near any settlements. Such large numbers of Hunters could easily destroy a gathering point.

Su Changxing ran across two streets, moving away from his previous position, temporarily abandoning the idea of going to the Mysterious Shop, as entering it might get him surrounded by many Hunters.

But running aimlessly on the streets wasn't a solution either, as Zombie activities could expose his position, continuously draining his stamina.

Finding a suitable spot, he climbed into a nearby building, cleared out Zombies, and found a spot with a good view on the fifth floor, crouching beside a window to hide.

The complex environment in the building allows for both advance and retreat, making it the safest approach for now.

Checking his phone, he found task information had popped up.

[Side Mission (Hunting as King): You killed a powerful Hunter. You've become the top prey for the Hunters. The one who kills you will become the new ruler.]

1. Successfully escape. (Reward: Random Mysterious Item)

2. Kill twenty Hunters, show you are not to be trifled with! (Reward: Two Random Mysterious Items)

3. Kill fifty Hunters, prove who the real ruler is. (Reward: One high-quality Mysterious Item, provides one chance for Tier Nine promotion)

Examining the task information, Su Changxing's pupils involuntarily constricted. Based on the task information, at least fifty Hunters are pursuing him, with the actual numbers likely being seventy or eighty or more.

The rewards are quite tempting, but the richer the reward, the more it indicates the danger involved.

The danger of greed is always most enticing, like a most deadly poison.

Su Changxing also made up his mind that if they couldn't find him, he'd stay hidden here tonight.

"Being cowardly is the right way."

He muttered, picking up the Shadow Bow, nocking an arrow, adjusting his breathing to the slowest pace while suppressing his body's heat.

In this process, his Mysteriousness kept growing, reaching 600 points.

Speed: 5.6+1.2 (Extraordinary)

Physique: 4.8+1.2 (Extraordinary)

Position: Tier Nine, Sober Dreamer (Extreme Rank) Compatibility 86%

Status: Healthy.

Evaluation: You are now considered a strong presence among Tier Nines, but just barely so, ensuring you can survive.

Su Changxing noticed that the compatibility had increased by one percent, probably not because of the boost in Mysteriousness but rather due to changes in himself.

As time slowly passed, nearly half an hour went by without any movement around, very tranquil, only the noise of the Zombies gave a semblance that these Hunters had abandoned their hunt.

However, he knew very well that this was unlikely, as the issuing of the task was confirmation that it wouldn't end so easily.

Suddenly, a faint sound echoed from the hallway outside, the sound of a cookie being crushed. This was Su Changxing's makeshift early warning device, scattering crumbs in the hallway that are hard to notice.

Su Changxing slowly picked up his handgun without making any other moves. The person outside also suddenly stopped, seemingly aware of the crushed cookie beneath their foot.

A lone individual, this person seemed to have discerned Su Changxing's presence here by the dead Zombie in the hallway.
