Chapter 96: The Lady of the House Returns

Su Changxing felt his strength returning to his body, slowly stood up, crawled down the stairs, still mindful of the presence of the "woman," maintaining the same posture, and opened the door to the room with the head.

In the darkness, a pair of eyes glowed red, staring at him.

Su Changxing asked flatly, "What did you do to me?"

The head replied matter-of-factly, "A fair trade, that's all. I showed you the way, so we performed a life-sharing ritual."

Goddamn fair trade.

Su Changxing took a deep breath to calm himself down, "So just tell me what your goal is."

The head looked smug, "Simple. Take the great True Knower Lord out of here. Otherwise, when that crazy woman comes back and kills me, you'll die too."

Su Changxing thought for a moment, suddenly saying, "If I commit suicide, you'll die too, right?"

The air fell silent, and the expression on the head's face gradually froze.

It looked at Su Changxing's serious expression, wondering if it had linked lives with a madman, and immediately shouted:

"No, brother, life is precious. I just want to get out of here. How about we break the ritual after you take me out?"

Su Changxing pondered for a moment. Of course, he wouldn't go down fighting with this thing. Whether the head's story was true or not, his best option for now was to take it out with him.

Plus, "True Knowledge" can detect "Life Sharing."

[Life Sharing: A ritual-based contract with high demands on both parties. Once a life sharing is successful, if one dies, the other dies too.

Note: Abilities in common between both parties are compounded.]

"I'll take you with me."

Su Changxing entered the room, grabbed the head, expecting a fleshy sensation, but it was cold, as cold and hard as marble.

This head seemed carved from marble, with a weight similar to stone.

"Why do you feel like a stone?"

Su Changxing stuffed the head into his backpack with one hand.

"Do you really think a head alone can survive a long time... Ow, could you be gentler?"

The head shrieked from inside the backpack.

"Shut up, and don't make a sound."

Su Changxing steadied himself, replaced the magazine in his pistol, and strode to the top of the stairs.

He felt anxious, sensing something ominous.

Seven or eight bodies lay quietly in the inner hall, unchanged from before.

He quickly exited through the passageway; the "woman" was gone, and the outer hall was silent too.

The Jackal's men seemed to have left long ago.

Su Changxing squeezed out the back door, planning to retrace his steps.

"Having me with you is not a bad thing. Do you know what a True Knower is, someone who perceives everything in the world?"

The head in the backpack seemed excited, thrilled to see the light of day again, it said.

Su Changxing calmly observed his surroundings, "I should be one too."

"Ha, how could that be... My True Knowledge ability has actually been enhanced."

The head paused for a moment, then exclaimed in surprise.

Enhanced?

Su Changxing used "True Knowledge" to probe "True Knowledge."

[True Knowledge: A nascent ability, roughly equivalent to an Identification Skill, strengthened by the life-sharing, currently equivalent to an enhanced Identification Skill]

It seemed that this head truly possessed the ability of True Knowledge, though its level was similar to his.

Su Changxing thought for a moment, "With a level similar to mine, you shouldn't really count as a True Knower, right?"

Though he had the title of True Knower, it didn't mean he was one; he was aware of that.

The head said indifferently, "I only have a head now, you can't expect too much from just a head."

"Bang~"

Su Changxing suddenly raised his gun, aiming through a gap at the bottom of the stairs, and pulled the trigger.

"Ah~"

A scream echoed from below at the same time.

Thanks to "True Knowledge," Su Changxing's perception ability increased dramatically, allowing him to notice a survivor hidden in the darkness instantly.

[Half-Twisted Human: Arsonist Tier Nine, injured, fearful]

The survivor only exposed a leg, and Su Changxing didn't kill him.

Rounding the corner, Su Changxing saw the full figure of the shadow, a glasses-wearing survivor, firing at the same moment, shooting them in the head, flames roaring over the corpse.

"It's the Arsonist. When you fired, he released his ability, ending up setting himself on fire; truly foolish. He should've used flame to block your path and blind your view."

The head muttered to itself in the backpack.

Su Changxing said irritably, "Whose side are you on? Aren't we on the same boat?"

The head paused, "You're right; we do seem to be in this together."

Howls rose like a tide.

Standing on the third floor, Su Changxing turned his head to watch the Undead Tide outside the walls, with countless zombies surging in the night, like waves.

Something was walking amidst them.

The head said seriously, "The Lady of the House must be back; she noticed I left the hall. Damn, she was planning to kill me before; now we're definitely screwed. What are you standing here for? Run!"

Su Changxing held his breath to avoid injury, sprinting downward with all his might, noting that numerous zombies had already clambered over the walls, rushing towards Shield Company.

The head shouted, "Dear God, can you run any faster? This woman's a real monster."

Su Changxing calmly replied, "You're too heavy. If you got down and ran yourself, we might be faster."

The head said, "Run with a head?"

"Bang bang~"

Su Changxing fired twice, hitting the head of a survivor peeking out from behind a nearby wall.

He gained another three hundred Points, but he felt no joy. To reach the target location required running a semicircle around the building's perimeter, and the zombies were already coming in.

At night, zombies were very fast.

He might not reach the door they came in before the zombies surrounded it.

"Do you have any way to kill all these zombies at once?"

Su Changxing ran forward as fast as he could, his tattered clothes and backpack flapping in the air.

The head cried out, "How could I have that; I'm just a head, merely a great True Knower."

Su Changxing retorted, "You said as long as there's a medium you can do anything, didn't you?"

The head sheepishly replied, "Ha, I was lying to you. If I had that kind of power, would I be stuck in this godforsaken place?"

"..."

Su Changxing gritted his teeth, "So I could've just killed you earlier."

The head said, "Theoretically, yes, but you're too cautious, so you wouldn't have."

Silently, Su Changxing took a silver-gray flash grenade from his pocket.

These zombies were extremely sensitive to light. A strong flash would definitely rile them up, either drawing them to the grenade or forcing them to retreat.

Either way, it would halt their advance.

In the moonlight, zombies surged like a black tide, their roars and screams filling the air.

He felt an anger coming from the Lady of the House, expressed through the zombies.
