Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress

Chapter 152: King of Knights [8] - Hesitation

Thinking of this, Liora's tense mind relaxed a little.

At the very least, she had seen the path forward. Now all that she needed to do was keep walking in it.

Her gaze shifted to the Lavender Knight Technique as she picked it up and quickly flipped through its pages.

She wanted to take a better look at its accompanying skills. Most importantly, she wanted to take a look at the Amethyst Swordfall, the skill that the Marquis had tried to perform before his death.

But just then, her actions paused.

With a flicker, her body teleported to the rooftop, and she lowered her eyes, looking into the distance.

Her eyes fell on a blurry figure that was walking silently in the middle of the night. The figure blended into the surrounding darkness, like a trained assassin ready to strike at their target.

Its footsteps were steady yet nimble, dashing forward and approaching a nearby building.

After it reached it, the figure stood below an open window and turned its head, inspecting its surroundings.

When it made sure that there was no one nearby, it leaped into the building.

--

Eleanor's face was expressionless beneath the silver mask.

After she wandered through the darkness, she soon arrived in front of her target's residence.

The muscles of her legs tensed as she pushed against the ground, launching herself up and leaping into the building through the open window.

The moment she landed, she rolled on the floor, relieving the remaining momentum in her body and keeping her actions mostly silent.

Rising to her feet, Eleanor observed her surroundings as her ears perked up, listening to the sounds around her.

Immediately, she noticed the complete lack of any noise in the building.

Clearly, everyone—including the servants—was asleep.

But this was within her expectations. In fact, it was the reason why she had chosen to come here so late.

Eleanor showed a surprising sense of familiarity with the building as she wandered through the rooms and the long corridors.

Before long, she arrived at a closed wooden door.

She understood that this was the room where her target was currently sleeping.

Reaching to the left side of her waist, Eleanor slowly unsheathed a short dagger before slowly opening the door.

Then, she stepped inside the room.

The interior was luxurious, with precious furniture scattered throughout, as well as elegant paintings hanging on each of its four walls.

But Eleanor paid no heed to this. She didn't stop to admire them and sigh at the luxury.

Her eyes were fully focused on the figure of the man lying on top of the king-sized bed.

He had short black hair and a handsome face, and was currently sleeping with his eyes shut.

This man was Alex, the son of her Uncle Roger and Eleanor's target. Beside him slept a beautiful woman, his partner, whom he had recently married.

Looking at the couple sleeping carelessly, Eleanor's eyes turned cold.

She approached the bed while making sure that her actions didn't produce any sound, only stopping when she stood right beside Alex's sleeping figure.

Then, her right hand moved.

The dagger's sharp edge shone brightly as it whistled through the air, aiming directly at the left side of Alex's chest.

The intuition of Knight Apprentices was already strong, much less that of True Knights.

When the dagger approached him and his life was soon to be in danger, Alex's eyes suddenly opened wide.

Glancing at the sharp light approaching him and seeing the shadowy figure beside him, he was shocked.

But he reacted very quickly.

His right hand moved beneath his pillow and grabbed the hidden sword, which he then waved towards his attacker.

Although Eleanor struck first, the difference in the length between the two weapons meant that the two attacks would land at the same time.

Therefore, Alex could be certain that the assassin would defend themselves rather than continue their attack and end up injured.

But he was mistaken.

Faced with the sword coming in her direction, Eleanor didn't retreat.

If anything, her grip on the dagger grew even firmer.

Under Alex's astonished gaze, the dagger's trajectory continued, and the two blows soon landed.

His sword strike hit the assassin's waist and dug deep into their skin, only stopping once it came into contact with the bones.

But as a price, his heart had been pierced by the dagger's sharp tip.

Until his final moments, Alex didn't understand.

What hatred did he and the assassin share that they would go to such lengths—even being seriously injured—all in order to kill him?

"Aah! An assassin! Murder!"

The moment after Alex took his last breath, a horrified scream cut through the silence.

Warm blood had splattered everywhere and had fallen on his wife's face, waking her up.

Seeing her husband dying in front of her and being unable to do anything, the woman couldn't help but scream for help.

Her sudden shout jolted Eleanor, who was overwhelmed by the pain in her waist.

Shifting her gaze to the horrified woman, her eyes flashed with hesitation. But very quickly, this hesitation vanished.

Stepping closer, she raised the dagger before bringing it down.

Soon, the noise in the room faded away.

--

The night was silent, and no one had discovered the death of the couple just yet.

After Eleanor left their residence, she didn't return to her room.

Instead, she silently made her way towards the mansion's infirmary.

Still bloody, she walked through the corridors and arrived at her destination.

Soon, she sat beside an unconscious middle-aged man.

It was her Uncle, Roger, who had been seriously injured during the battle with the Holy Church.

He had ended up like this because he wanted to win some time for her brother and Eleanor to escape.

Recalling this, Eleanor's hand clasping the dagger relaxed a little.

Subconsciously, she couldn't help but stare at Roger sleeping beside her, his figure reflected in her blue eyes.

It was hard for her to make a decision. Though Roger had watched her grow up, it was a fact that the two now stood in opposite sides.
