Treatise Of A Failed Knight

Chapter 181: Heathcliff

Supreme Apotheosis… Demigod… Leviathan… Pathways… Leaper… The Princes… Temporal Necrosis… Aego Marks… I choose you…

… Heathcliff.

At that moment, a pair of spectral eyes opens wide.

Then, the descending Javier Aditi's relaxed body twitches. His single eye flashes with a strange light, harboring the reflection of the ceiling above him. A complex mix of emotions flickers in his eye for a moment before he purses his lips.

"Hmm…"

As this calm sound, one of deep contemplation, smoothly echoes in the air, the terrifyingly loud noise of the Blinding Ray of Destruction bursts forth, filling everything in the cavern with searing light.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

Devastation rings aloud, and all manner of chaos envelops the vast expanse.

Still, despite the tremors of the cavern's floor and the continuous collapse of the ceiling, one entity maintains an air of absolute serenity.

He suddenly appears on the ground, a noticeable distance from the two surviving Magivores, almost as though he had always been there. But no, he used to be there, hence he was able to reappear in that position.

—Tracing.

"Strange…" He mutters quietly. "Still a Witness… sure, but a Harbinger? This is unexpected."

"HOWWWLLL!!!"

Right as these words leave his lips, the two Cadre 5 Magivores close in on him.

One of them appears to be in perfect health, while the other is wounded, having all kinds of injuries all over its purple fur as well as dried, corrosive blood glistening on it.

Despite seeing them approach him, he is unfazed.

He notices something in his grasp, and it turns out to be a crooked flute. The Flute of Salvation, an S Grade Armament that would be—

"Tch, trash…" He flings the object aside, almost as though it were worthless filth.

For a moment, he is quiet.

'According to my arrangements, he should be a Leaper. His existence is also very weak at the moment, which is likely why I've surfaced despite his Rank 1 status. Too many things have deviated from my machinations. Could it be… her?'

A dangerous glint flickers in his eyes, and for the first time, his countenance changes to reveal deep emotions.

'Anastasia Evernight… False Goddess of Light and Queen of Darkness. That Demigod Seeker must have been behind this.' He sighs, clicking his tongue for a moment. 'Her arrangements were subtle too. I wouldn't have noticed any changes, and, hmm… oh, yes… these things are still here.'

Unable to dwell in his thoughts any longer, he is forced to cast his gaze on the Direwolf Kings.

Cadre 5 Magivores.

Beings who stand at the apex of known Magivores.

They are the limit of human ability to both comprehend and defeat.

However, even when he looks at them, it is almost with a casual, disconcerting gaze.

"I don't have time for this…" After this murmur, he vanishes yet again and appears atop the corpse of the fallen Cadre 5 Magivore, increasing the distance between himself and these beasts yet again.

"The ingredients are rudimentary, but I can substitute what is lacking by improvisation."

Within what appears to be moments, he easily dissects the corpse of the Direwolf King, taking out the horns, eyes, fur remnants, tongue, and several other body parts.

His body flickers like a shadow, becoming a ghost that appears and reappears in an instant.

It's almost like he has become a specter of nature.

After gathering all of these body parts, a small frown of dissatisfaction dots his features.

"Not effective enough… ah!" His eye flickers to life as he notices a few things around him, causing him to vanish and easily evade the attacks of the two Direwolf Kings.

He appears right next to the corpses of the fallen Royal Knights, quickly harvesting their leftover Special Resources amidst the rubble and skeletal remains. He does this elegantly, showing no mistakes or waste of movement.

By the time an attack is sent towards him, he would have already vanished, appearing elsewhere to plunder the leftover Special Resources.

For every time he plunders, he returns to the corpse of the Direwolf King and leaves his spoil among the pile of parts he harvested from the Cadre 5 Magivore earlier. All of this while also half-heartedly evading the Direwolf Kings, treating them as though they were harmless children.

After doing this a few times, he appears right on top of the Direwolf King corpse and places his attention on the bloody pile that now stands in front of him.

A cold look constantly plays on his face.

'Because of the nature of my Existence, it appears his Incomplete Harbinger Pathway has forcibly switched to its Leaper component. I can only use his Fragmented Conception of Tracing, but with no limitations as long as it exists within a day.'

In essence, there is no cooldown.

He can also access everything within a day without the risk of failure.

But even that won't be enough to stop these Cadre 5 Magivores. Although one is injured, it is still a genuine apex predator. The other one would also be problematic to deal with, especially since there isn't any effective weapon he can use to fight.

At this point, he brings out Frost Bite and thrusts it towards the pile, also discarding it like a worthless item.

"Now, then… this shouldn't take too long."

The moment the B Grade Armament lands on the pile of Special Resources, he snaps his fingers.

Then, a spark appears.

All the Special Resources begin to react with each other, connecting as though they were constellations in the night sky. Sparkles of all kinds of colors manifest, all of which are drowned in frosty mist and golden light.

He watches all of this silently, even as the Direwolves approach him yet again.

However, the moment the first one draws near, he snaps his fingers.

WHOOSH!

A sudden arrow of light—about seven meters tall and three meters thick—suddenly shoots out from this reaction and pierces the body of the Direwolf King.

—The healthy one.

It only lasts a single breath before dying.

As for the second one, even less effort is utilized, as a blazing hot flame erupts from the concoction of dazzling lights, easily consuming it within seconds. Its charred fur, sizzling flesh, and exposed bones remain as it collapses on the ground.

Dead.

Within seconds, both of these Cadre 5 Magivores fall, completely and utterly wasted.

'Now where was I?' He resumes his thoughts as he appears atop the new corpses, once again harvesting their organs. 'Anastasia Evernight… you keep causing problems for me. I expect them on a large scale, but what purpose could someone this insignificant serve for you?'

By the time he is done with this train of thought, he has created two new piles.

With a snap of his fingers, dazzling reactions start to occur.

Then, he throws in some leftover Potions inside one, while flinging the Flute of Salvation into the second one. After waiting for a brief moment—at least, to him—pillars of bright light erupt from both of them.

One of them produces a golden ichor.

He commands this tiny droplet of liquid to approach him, consuming it in an instant.

After swallowing, he flexes his fingers and nods softly.

"The pain and discomfort have vanished. His existence is also rapidly recovering." After saying this, he casts his gaze on the second reaction.

This time, a blazing sword emerges from its depths.

The sword appears resplendent, golden, and powerful. It is a culmination of the leftover Armaments of the fallen Royal Knights, at least, the ones he could salvage, alongside the Flute of Salvation.

The result is a sleek, elegant blade that is brimming with power.

"A more suitable replacement compared to that damaged Armament. With this, I've not only recovered his body, but I've given him a weapon. Now it's left to him to use these to his advantage and survive." He nonchalantly grabs the weapon and then shrugs for a moment before vanishing from the cavern and appearing right outside.

Now standing atop the snowy mountain, he casts his gaze on everything around him for a moment—witnessing its majesty with an unimpressed expression.

It doesn't take him very long to spot the retreating staff and students from the Academy.

'Although he is merely Rank 1, with my Existence assisting him, it should be possible this one time. I will have to bear most of the burden, though.' He sighs deeply, closing his eyes for a moment before everything around him shifts and he appears right in front of the shocked crowd.

Once he does, he starts to feel dizzy.

His sight his blurry, so he can barely make out the stunned faces of the staff members and students. Even when he hears their voices, it is only a deluge of loud echoes and soft whispers.

He knows… the time for slumber has come.

'They'll not think much of my sudden appearance and chalk it down to the effects of a Potion since none of them are Leviathans, although that one…' His gaze rests on Seth for a moment, his brows furrowing upward. 'To think a creation of the Apotheosis Creed is present here, too. Just how much did you alter, Evernight?'

Although slight emotions of dissatisfaction surge within him, his mind is still.

It flows uninterrupted, even as he is fading away.

'Oh well. It seems he has ensured his identity remains hidden, and although they recognize him, they do not know it is Javier Aditi under the mask. Even if he loses consciousness, none of them have the ability to pry the mask open and discover his identity.'

This will guarantee that all things remain secure.

They will take the unconscious Javier with them, and when he awakes, he will not only feel rejuvenated, but he will also have a new Armament to keep him company.

Most importantly, he will remember nothing.

'I want to see what more you have in store, Seeker of God. Will you show up during his Apotheosis as well? I certainly hope you do, since that will make it more interesting…'

At this moment, the existence called Heathcliff is finally extinguished, drowning in the sea of unconsciousness while a new one emerges to the surface.

Javier Aditi… He has returned.

He didn't die from the fall, or from his existence being drained, or even from the attacks of the Direwolf Kings.

He survived… just as he hoped.
