Treatise Of A Failed Knight

Chapter 188: Crimson Direwolf Emperor's Defeat (Part 1)

"HOOOOWWWWLLLL!!!"

The deafening cry of the Crimson Direwolf Emperor reverberates through the skies as it rapidly plunges from its great height. It feels like the descent of a great mountain, or the fall of a crimson meteorite.

The mounting pressure causes my naked skin to tremble, and all the hair on my skin grows erect in an instant.

However, I refuse to be overwhelmed.

Without wasting any time, I point my golden blade towards it and launch a torrent of energy at it.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

Naturally, it responds with an attack of its own to ensure its safety.

This time, one of its mouths opens, and a stream of flames proceeds from it. The crimson fires form a spiral that swirls at my golden burst of power, colliding to form fireworks of clashing energies between us.

The blinding ray forces me to look away, but the moment I hear a soft whimper from the Cadre 6 beast, I realize some of my attacks must have gotten through.

I also hurriedly dart away from my previous location, considering how fragments of flames are also targeting me. Thankfully, I'm much faster than those leftover sparks, which means I wouldn't get hit unless I actually became too careless.

Unfortunately, this window is exploited by the Crimson Direwolf Emperor, and it safely lands with no difficulty.

The moment its colossal body touches the ground, everything vibrates, and a huge crater is formed with it majestically standing in its center.

Even the faraway residence of the Vey'lithars feels the tremors, and the large cracks that spiderweb from the crater slither towards that location. As I witness this grand sight of destruction, I also rapidly pay attention to the rest of my surroundings.

I am quickly enraptured by the level of destruction around me.

Hectares of fields have been razed to the ground, and many places that used to radiate with sheer beauty and wonder are now nothing more than piles of rubble.

So much chaos.

All because of a single entity.

'If this Magivore were outside, just how much damage would it cause?' I silently wonder for a moment before casting those thoughts aside.

That isn't important at the moment.

What matters is taking down this beast and eliminating Ciel's greatest weapon.

'But…' A bead of sweat forms on my face as my hardened gaze lands on the terrifying creature. '… It won't be easy.'

Now that Obsidian Steed is gone, I have lost most of my mobility.

Short-range attacks will have to be my priority, which is why I have currently taken the stance of the Superior Aditi Martial Technique. The problem lies in its counterattack; most dangerously, its Poisonous Breath.

I have no way to defend against it.

'But with Frontflow, I can at least watch out for it and do my best to dodge.'

WHOOSH!

My body flows like a ruptured stream of water as I slither across the devastated battlefield, making my way to the enemy. It shoots off wind blasts from one mouth, but I use my footwork to evade the attacks, leaping several times just to avoid its area of impact.

Upon seeing the ineffectiveness of the wind blasts, it starts to use its other mouth to send fire blasts as well. Once I manage to evade those as well, it sends both fire and wind blasts simultaneously, creating a terrifying wave of the complementary force in my path.

"Useless!" With a glorious shout, I brandish my golden blade and swing with absolute lethality.

Brilliant golden light charges from it, reinforcing its edge and sending a wave of pure energy flying towards the incoming stream of wind and flames.

SWOOOOSH!

The terrifying crimson wall is sliced into two, extinguished by a single slice of my blade.

I continue my confident march, only a few meters from the Crimson Direwolf Emperor at this point. I can feel its deep glare on me, the caution it displays in my presence, and the hints of fear plastered over its multiple eyes.

This beast… it is afraid of me.

It is right to be.

"HOWWWWWWWWWWWLLLLLL!!!!"

It lets out its Sonic Attack once again, nearly sending my body flying along with everything within range. However, I plant my blade on the ground, braving the immense pressure that would push me several hundred meters back if I let up for even a moment.

The ground is unstable, unfortunately, which means I have to keep digging deeper just to keep a foothold. This is not counting the great damage my body is receiving, especially being so close to the blast.

I feel lightheaded.

A loud ringing continues to echo in my brain.

My grip begins to loosen as I feel my body hitting its limits, unable to bear much more.

'No! Hang on!' I tell myself while gritting my teeth.

I can't give up now!

"Just a little longer!" I can't even hear my own scream, but I make it anyway. "I just have to wait a little longer!"

After about a minute of enduring such overwhelming pain, the echoes finally stop, causing my body to slump a little. However, I have no time for relaxation. Once I have a few seconds of break, I tightly grip my blade and resume my run.

This is a race.

A race against time—

'Just as I have a cooldown period between Conceptions, it also has a cooldown period whenever it wishes to switch attacks. I've been calculating it for some time now, and I wasn't sure before, but now… I am certain!'

It's a long shot, but if I can make it to the top of its head before it recovers… then I can win!

WHOOOSH!

Running desperately in the vast field, I rapidly close my distance yet again.

However, the Crimson Direwolf Emperor swipes its hand at me, intending to slash my body into meat chunks. I hurriedly evade the attack, only to find another limb descending to crush me into meat paste.

"Tch!"

Twisting my body to the side, I just slightly evade this attack, even feeling some of the crimson fur brush against my exposed skin.

Echoes of destruction echo beneath and behind me, but I continue racing ahead.

It launches yet another blow at me, and after dodging, I slice it with my blade, causing crimson blood to gush out immediately. A loud scream of pain fills the air, and a surge of crimson lightning descends from above.

I am forced to retreat, leaping backwards to prevent myself from suffering the same fate as before.

Even though the clinging lights of Golden Dawn protect me, there is only so much it can do against the terror of the crimson lightning. If I also consider the energy I have to save for my attacks, I have to spend less on defense.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!

The ground I once stood on is obliterated, and a devastatingly deep crater replaces it.

That was close.

But I'm not one to gawk at destruction.

Not when there's a perfect opportunity to counterattack.

Once again, I let out a golden stream of attack, hitting the enemy right in the chest with my attack.

"HOOWWWLLL!!!"

Its screams are like music to my ears, which, thankfully, weren't permanently deafened by the earlier Sonic Howls. Hot winds swirl around my body as my attack makes impact, causing burns to appear all over the monster.

I'm doing well.

My golden burst of light also gives me the perfect window to approach without worrying about the enemy's counter, so I push my legs to move as fast as they can.

They press against the ground, letting out loud echoes of devastation with each step.

Once I reach the optimal distance, I swing my blade to the side, retracting the light and relying solely on melee. Twisting my body, I launch myself upward and create a powerful swirl in my sharp ascent.

My blade slices through the flesh of the beast as I rise higher and find a foothold on its furry, bloody body.

Once I stick a stable landing on one of its arms, I charge towards the closest head, brandishing my glowing blade for yet another attack. I can see it lifting its other limb to assault me, and the moment its claws get close, I intercept the attack with a slash filled with pure golden light.

BAM!

The hand recoils backward, giving me a perfect window to keep charging.

Two of the Crimson Direwolf Emperor's heads send wind and fire towards me, disregarding the damage it would have on its hand, but I evade just in time, leaping into the air and spinning in my descent to send a critical golden strike on the head of the beast.

SWOOOOSH!

It happens in the blink of an eye.

A flash.

But—

SPLOOSH!

A head is cleanly lopped off, and as I make my descent to the ground, watching the splatters of blood freeze in the air and the decapitated head make its slow descent to the ground, a look of brilliance forms on my face.

I did it!

I cut off one head!

But my celebration is cut short once I witness purple mist forming on the mouths of the two other heads. I can easily tell what that is, and it won't be good to get caught up in it.

I have to run!

WHOOSH!

I hurriedly make my escape, using the falling head as a foothold, as I leave the area of impact right before the poisonous breath explodes all around the beast.

Thankfully, it seems the Crimson Direwolf Emperor won't move once it releases the poisonous mist. That way, I have some leeway to create even more distance before the poison reaches me.

Or—

BOOOOOOOOOM!!!

I send a concentrated ray of light to one of the heads. Although I can't see through the poisonous mist, I memorized its position and targeted the most likely place it would be, thus my attack has most definitely hit the target.

As proof, a loud cry of pain fills the air.

I simply snicker and keep leaping back, only to see the Crimson Direwolf Emperor charging out of the purple mist with its jaw wide open, ready to swallow me whole.

Once again, without hesitation, I send a gush of brilliant light forward.

SHIIINNGG!

It flows into its mouth, piercing through the other side within mere moments.

I stumble backwards, barely evading the creature's crash while I prepare to mutilate it some more. The moment I get close, though, it reveals yet another Special Ability that I didn't even know it had.

Spikes!

Its fur suddenly turns into razor-sharp needles and is discharged in an instant.

"My God…!"

My eyes widen in sheer amazement as I witness an endless rain of long, needle-like hair charging in all directions. The attack covers everything for miles, and there is no space between each spike to evade.

Such an overwhelming attack… it is so absurd!

I reckon they are its last line of defense, which means I've gotten extremely close to ending its life.

I can't let up now!

'Just a little more…' My thoughts sharply echo as I cast a gaze on the flickering golden lights on my blade. There's very little energy left in Golden Dawn. I doubt it will be enough to complete even one more attack.

It appears I'll need to undo the protective layer of light… just to secure even more energy.

Even then, it won't be enough.

'Once the stockpiled energy is exhausted, what happens? I don't know… but I still have to expend a lot of energy to get close to the Crimson Direwolf Emperor!'

An Armament like this should have its own innate energy.

Expending it would mean diminishing its quality, but I see no other route for victory in this situation. If I don't use everything at my disposal, I won't be able to make it to the finish line and cut off the remaining two heads.

I have to do this…

Leaving the golden membrane of light serving as my protection, I will need to carve a path with the blade and reach the severely wounded Crimson Direwolf Emperor.

Once I do… victory is mine!
