[Your Greed Knows No Bounds]
You have slain a Rank 2 Child Frostmaw Wyrm. Spirit absorbed: +1.1
• Spirit: 49 → 50
• Mind: 37 → 38
"Hahaha!"
Dante laughed in joy as he sensed his soul and mind becoming stronger.
How long had it been since the last time he truly absorbed a spirit?
Hell, it'd been so long!
The immense joy Dante felt at this moment couldn't be described with words. He couldn't help but imagine the stats that he'd gain from killing Adrian and his wife.
Putting that aside, their spirit alone was a great meal. Killing the spirit would raise his stats more than any of them.
'Should I kill Ruby as well?' As soon as this question appeared in Dante's mind, he quickly dismissed it.
Why the hell would he kill Ruby?
He didn't know whether that was caused by the corruption or something made by Greed, but he didn't care as it was absolutely not his.
Crack!
Just then, Dante heard the sound of stone shattering. Looking at the source of the sound, he saw the last toddler digging a hole desperately with its hands and mouth, trying not to make a sound.
'Is it trying to run without me noticing? That's a bit smart for a toddler. Its Potential Luck is also higher than the wyrm.' Dante's eyes were filled with interest as he thought about that.
If he was right, then the beast had the potential to become Rank 3 in the future, turning into one of two terrors that lived in the White Abyss.
Unfortunately for it…
CRACK!
The demonic shadow wolf bit its head, shattering its skin before proceeding to eat it.
After the beast died, Dante started considering his next move.
'Should I inform Ruby that I'm done or check the gate myself?'
Dante instantly shrugged and went to check the gate, he didn't even have to think for so long about this.
He wasn't planning to do everything by himself, of course, but he wanted to see if opening it would require demonic energy.
If it needed demonic energy in order to open, then it was better to do that without Ruby watching him.
Dante dismissed his wolf and walked to the gate. As he stood before it, he began to search for anything that could help him to open the gate.
It had no handles or holes, and the surface was smooth without secret buttons.
After a few minutes, he couldn't find anything.
'How the hell am I supposed to open this?'
As Dante examined the gate in frustration, his eyes suddenly landed on a strange mark that was inscribed on the gate.
Unlike all the dragons and centipedes, this mark was special. It showed a mix of them, a dragon with a centipede's segmented exoskeleton and a centipede as a tail.
'Is this how a demonic dragon looks?' Dante wondered as he examined the demonic dragon in awe.
Although it looked cool, it was a bit strange.
If he ended up like that… How would the centipede tail work?
'Don't tell me I'm going to have two brains, one for the dragon and one for the demon. Hell, this looks weird!' Dante shivered unconsciously, imagining himself fighting with the tail for a meal.
However, those thoughts lingered for only a moment before Dante extended his right arm to touch the demonic dragon.
Tap!
But nothing happened.
His touch did absolutely nothing.
'So… it needs demonic energy?'
Dante infused the demonic dragon with demonic energy, yet nothing happened.
His frown deepened as he thought about one last thing.
'Blood? Should I show my bloodlines?'
Dante retrieved a sword from his ring and made a small cut on the tip of his right hand's finger, letting only a few droplets paint the demonic dragon in red.
Additionally, he infused the blood with mana, demonic energy, and spiritual energy that was essentially focused on the Shadow Aspect.
That way, he showed his mana signature, his bloodlines, his Abyss Domain, and his crimson demonic energy that showed his Greed origin.
To Dante's surprise, the demonic dragon absorbed the blood, then the gate glowed with purple light.
Before he could make any sense of the situation, the gate opened upward like a mechanical door, revealing a corridor made of onyx-like material.
It looked the same as the room where he had found the Sin of Greed.
'Sh-should I go forward or get Ruby with me?' Dante hesitated as he looked at the corridor.
Whatever was there could be something too sensitive to reveal to someone like Ruby. He truly wanted to see what was there before deciding whether to tell her or not.
'But I can't leave her there like that. She might die if something like the wyrm attacked her.' When Dante thought about that, a black centipede appeared in front of Dante.
It was Sin of Greed.
"You're doing that again." Greed seemed to frown, then he added: "Why do you care so much about a woman who wanted to take advantage of you and receive a share from the spoils?"
"You aren't responsible for protecting her. Following you was her own choice, remember? Whatever happens to her is her fault."
Dante glared at Greed coldly: "I wouldn't have found this place if not for her. Why would I care about her wanting a small share from what she had found with her ability? Additionally, she's giving me the choice of giving her a share or not."
Greed nodded: "Hmm, correct, correct. But remind me again, how did she help you exactly?"
"She—"
"Nothing!" Greed cut Dante off before he could respond: "Her only job was being a compass, or a liability even. She prevented you from using the chaos magic, demonic energy, and ether. She needed your protection all the time. She couldn't kill a single beast and let you do everything while she was hiding. Do I have to also remind you that she's supposed to be a Rank 2 being while you're only Rank 1? Not to mention her heavenly ability, which became useless the moment it started to lead backward!"
"..."
Dante couldn't respond. Greed was right, Ruby was a liability so far. Dante even had to create a compass of misfortune to fix the problem of her ability leading downward.
Greed continued: "Despite everything, you still refuse to be a bit greedy? You seem to misunderstand the nature of greed."
"ENVY means wanting or hating something that someone else has. If you envy someone for having a sword, you'd try to mimic or destroy that person's sword." Greed's voice was filled with disgust and disdain as he explained the nature of Envy.
Then he continued: "But greed isn't like this. You do something yourself, earn it yourself, and achieve it yourself. You won't care about someone else's sword. You'll get your own sword with your own efforts… no, you won't be satisfied with that sword and you'll get yourself a better one!"
"You worked so hard for this opportunity. Now, prioritizing your own safety and gains while ignoring Ruby is something that you deserve when she did nothing worthy. Your greed here isn't something bad, but deserved!"
"..."
Dante opened his mouth, but he couldn't respond for a long moment.
"I'm not like you."
Those were the only words he could mutter before turning around and walking toward Ruby.
Greed? He only laughed while watching Dante from behind, leaving only one sentence.
"You will regret it."
