I Became Part of the Dragon's Hoard

Chapter 59: A Dragon Tyrant Takes an Innocent Crab's Life

Bery and Valerie flew through the raging ocean storm, until eventually it calmed. The two of them landed on a small island bathed in sunlight. The tropical place was small, and any signs of a storm before had ended. It was replaced by white sand beneath Bery's feet and the kitten remained awe stricken.

"It's hard to believe something like this actually exists. We were just flying through turbulence, and this place is the opposite."

The sea's water in front of Bery was a deep blue, and there didn't seem to be much wildlife either. Beneath the water surface was mostly small plants and a few fishes swimming around.

"I discovered this place when I flew back to the south continent many years ago, and I thought you might like it. I don't even think many of the world knows about it, and there are probably other places like it."

The kitten sat down on the beach and sank into the white sand. She purred from the warm glow of the sunlight against her skin.

Valerie grinned and sat next to her. "You are just like a real precious kitten, choosing to sunbathe on the beach."

Bery frowned and leaned back, laying her back on the warmth of the sand. "I am pretty sure no other kittens have gotten to do anything even close to this."

The kitten reached her hands into the sand and ran each particle between her fingertips. I wonder how much a place like this would be worth?

Bery turned her head towards the few trees on the island, finding a small brown and round fruit. Large crabs climbed up the trees and cracked them open, and she was reminded of the granchin's fruit she'd eaten before.

Valerie picked up one of the brown fruits from the ground and cracked it open with her claw. "What's really good about these are the juices inside. You can eat this white stuff too."

Bery took the half offered to her graciously and took a sip of the fruit before biting into the white flesh. A sweet flavor invaded the kitten's mouth, and she clutched her cheek with joy.

"I can see you mixing this with something," the kitten said, "this white stuff might be good in a dish."

"I thought so too. Unfortunately, I have not found many places where this grows. If we could replicate these trees back home, that could be good."

The kitten ate even more of the fruit and looked out on the horizon. She could see large specs in the distance. These supposed islands were large, especially considering they must have been far away. It's a mystery how they've not discovered a place like this yet.

Though, when Bery considered it, she didn't stop to observe every small thing. When she was a little girl, she lifted up rocks to see if there were signs of life under them. However, as she got older, she felt less of those inclinations.

Bery stood up and moved over to one of these trees. She looked up and saw many more of those brown fruits, and she saw a crustacean climbing the bark. She pressed her head close and observed the small crab go about it's daily routine. It climbed all the way to the top of the tree and clipped a stem holding the fruit.

The fruit impacted the ground, and the crab climbed back down the tree. It's pinchers clasped the brown thing and broke it into small pieces. All the while, the crab held no care in the world about the nearby kitten.

Valerie watched this scene with a grin. "What do you think? Should I make some crab soup?"

Bery flinched. "It would feel bad to eat such a thing after it worked so hard."

"That is the way of the world. This crab can only be so careless because it doesn't have any predators here." The dragoness looked up into the sky and placed a hand above her eyes. "There are no birds here."

"Do birds eat crabs?"

Valerie nodded. "I have seen them eat crabs before. If you think about it, we could be the first two people in the world to try one of these."

"You mean to tell me that you've never eaten one before?"

"Nope, and it will be much more enjoyable if we try them together."

The crab continued to mind its own business as if there weren't two people talking about eating it. It dragged the piece of fruit along with it towards the water.

Valerie pointed at the crab walking away. "Look, it is fleeing towards the ocean. If we don't decide quickly, we may never get to taste this crab again."

Bery sighed and looked all around the island, spotting many more of the crustaceans. Naturally, they could have gone for any other ones, yet Valerie acted as if their meal was disappearing. Worse yet, the kitten felt her stomach rumbling. She was torn between wanting to let the crab go and pouncing on it right then and there.

"This would be a good opportunity for you to learn hunting, yet those pinchers are deadly. I would feel sad if it clipped your ear."

Bery's hand instinctively shot to her ear and gripped it protectively. She could picture that crab ripping it apart like it was a little brown fruit, and the kitten frowned at her dragoness for putting that image in her head. "Don't say such scary things."

"I'm sorry, kitten. You were the one that told me I should let you experience the world more. Besides, I would never let that crab pinch off your gorgeous ears. I would spear it before it ever had the chance." A flaming spear appeared in Valerie's hands. "I will make this quick."

Bery wanted to close her eyes, yet at the same time, she found herself unable to look away. She watched the dragon's spear pierce the crab, and it squealed for a moment, only to die soon after.

The kitten looked around, expecting an army of angry crabs to swarm the two of them, but no such thing happened. The other crabs continued about their lives as if one of their breathren wasn't helplessly killed in their little crab village.

Valerie picked up the dead crab and brought it towards Bery like a proud cat bringing a freshly killed mouse. "I think this thing will be super tasty. I already have in mind an idea I want to try."

Bery would not admonish the dragoness. To do so would be both hypocritical and antithetical to Kanai's very existence. Even though he was just a lonely crab, it was his destiny to be eaten by the two of them. What's more, he looked large enough to fill both of their bellies for a while.

The crab took up all of Valerie's torso, and the dragoness summoned a large pot from her erased space. "I have tried several different types of crabs and fish in many different ways. For this one, I would like to try boiling it with some spicy waters. Maybe add a pinch of the fruit that this guy couldn't get back to his home."

Bery sighed and looked between the dead crab and his broken fruit on the ground. It was a sad and cruel reality to exist in. The poor crab and his food would serve as sustenance for the both of them.

"I think I will need to paint something to cope with this, darling."

Valerie chuckled and summoned a canvas for the kitten. "I already thought you would like to paint the white sands here."

"Yeah, but the image of this place has been destroyed by a dragoness that decided to go on a rampage on the local population."

Valerie dropped the poor crab in the pot and started boiling him. She ignited it with her fire magic. "This hardly counts as a rampage. It's only one poor citizen."

Bery sighed in an exaggerated manner and held out her paint brush as if her heart was skewered, and she was a mere damsel. She placed her other hand against her chest. "This poor citizen of the white crab beaches. He existed as a mere peasant to farm fishes and fruit, and a tyrant dragon came to take his life."

The kitten's hand dipped into some of the white and yellow paint, mixing them together to create a white sand. Later, she started working on the body of the red crab, mixing both red and black to create its dark shell.

Even though she tried to be dramatic, the scent of the boiling crab reached her, and her tummy rumbled even more. The spicy mixture had a slight hint of sweetness that coated the air, and it made the kitten's nose tingle for a taste. She tried to focus on her painting, but she continued in a hunger enforced delirium.

The seafood stirred her kitten heart, and she salivated for a taste.
