Adrian smiled at her remark but on the inside, He knew she was lying for his sake, but he smiled back anyway, pretending to believe her.
The sight of the doctor's sturdy log cabin, smoke curling peacefully from its chimney, was a familiar sudden relief.
Inside, the air was filled with the scent of drying herbs and faint burning incense, this was Adrian's first time entering the clinic ever since he was transmigrated, the sight of the medieval clinic was not half bad. At least it wasn't too far back and by the state of his surroundings, the doctor was definitely doing a good job keeping this place up to shape.
" Adrian!" His sight seeing was interrupted when Mr Millers daughter spotted them and cane out to greet them.
" I was so worried when daddy brought you in back then. How could you let that happen to you. You almost gave me a heart attack." Amy seemed to have forgotten the meaning of the word personal space as she pulled him into her embrace.
He wanted to get away but his heart trembled when he heard her sobbing lightly. Noticing her genuine worry, he simply patted her on the back to calm her down.
" It's ok, I'm fine aren't I?" He said jokingly. Amy's expression eased up a little seeing his ever present radiant persona.
" Amy dear, is your father in perhaps?" Melissa interrupted their moment, yet a look of silent satisfaction was on her face.
Adrian smiled awkwardly, before releasing Amy.
" Oh, I'm sorry Aunty, I didn't notice you there." Amy became nervous when she realized Melissa was also present.
" It's ok dear, there's no need to kick up a fuss." Melissa revealed an easing smile.
" Your father?" She asked again.
" Oh, he's in the back tending to something, I'll take you to him right now!" Amy said before leading the way.
They followed her and soon came upon Mr miller.
They found him organizing jars of tinctures on a high shelf, his broad shoulders making the task look effortless. He turned as they entered, his gaze, as always, flicking over Adrian with a hint of coolness before warming considerably as it settled on his mother.
"Melissa." he said, his deep voice losing its usual gruff edge. " Please forgive me, I had no idea you were coming."
" My mother doesn't seem to be completely fine Mr Miller, could you please run a check up on her just in case." Adrian didn't mind the mans gaze but remembered his reason for coming here in the first place, which was to make sure his mother was taken care of.
" Oh?" Mr Miller raised a brow before his gaze landed on Melissa, this time their was a strange calm to his gaze.
" Come, Let's see how you're faring." He said before leading everyone to the patient room of the clinic where he guided her to a worn but comfortable chair near the fire place in the room. In that moment, His movements were surprisingly careful and gentle for a man as large as himself.
As the doctor began his examination, asking her questions about her sleep and her appetite, Adrian busied himself by looking at the myriad of dried plants hanging from the rafters.
Amy couldn't stay although she wanted to because Mr Miller assigned her a new set of tasks all of a sudden, she obviously protested but ultimately ended up leaving but, not before waving Adrian goodbye, a sight that made Mr Millers face dim momentarily.
While distracting himself, Adrian could still feel the weight of the man's occasional, thoughtful glances, but he kept his eyes fixed on a bundle of herbs or tools in any random direction.
He wasn't cowering from Mr Miller's gaze but merely didn't want to distract him in any way since his mother was getting treated.
After a short while, Mr. Miller straightened up. "Your color is better than last time I brought you in Melissa." he said to Adrian's mother, a note of genuine encouragement in his tone.
"The medicine seems to be helping. Why don't you rest here by the fire for a few more minutes while it does its work? I need to have a word with your son about our little arrangement."
Melissa looked confused but she nodded, already looking drowsy from the warmth of the flame and the herbal medicine she had just taken.
' What more does he want to discuss? Is he going to ask for a refund because some herbs were frozen?' Adrian thought to himself but he didn't retaliate, well not yet anyways.
Adrian followed the doctor to the far end of the room, near a cluttered desk covered in parchment and pestles. Which looked like the doctors working desk. He expected a question about a damaged herb or maybe that one of the herbs must've been missing when he dropped off the goods.
Instead, Mr. Miller leaned against his desk, his arms crossed over his chest. His voice was low, meant for Adrian's ears alone.
"Now that we're alone, I'd like you to tell me one thing."
"The man you brought back." he began, his dark eyes intent. "The one the goblins had."
" When I went to question him about what happened, he told me that you were so insistent on bringing the herbs back with you even though you were on the verge of death..."
" Boy what's wrong with you? You got a screw loose or something?" Mr Miller glared at Adrian as if he was a fool.
" If you're mother was ill, you could've just brought her to clinic, I would've treated her and had you pay me back later. There was no reason for you to risk your life like that venturing into that blizzard."
" But I didn't go into the blizzard..."
" Y-You... What do you mean you didn't enter the blizzard. Weren't you caught up in it because you took so long looking for herbs?" Mr Millers voice turned doubtful.
