Rune Matrix: Programming Magic After Transmigration

Chapter 109: Innovate 1

Aurelia hesitated to leave, her mind clouded by concern.

Would leaving him alone again cause another mishap? she wondered.

The last time they had left Zephyr alone, the kind-looking carriage driver had tried to assassinate him. He lived only due to luck.

To make matters worse, the villain behind the carriage driver was supposedly still hunting him down.

She turned to face Elenor.

"What do you think?" she asked.

"For the moment, nothing should happen," Elenor replied, adding, "And if something does, we can return easily."

Elenor's confidence was backed by reason. She gazed at the surroundings.

The day was slowly shifting toward noon, and from the sky, they could view the entire area at any time. Keeping an eye on Zephyr would not be difficult.

While the village covered a large area due to the flax fields stretching between houses, the population was barely two hundred people. It wouldn't take much time to reach them, since they were currently in the middle of the village.

"You don't have to think that hard. I can protect myself," Zephyr said.

Already, the mana he used up had refilled. His hand was itching for a proper battle.

"Leaving me and saving the rest is the best option."

As if agreeing to his words, Moss nodded fervently.

"See, even he agrees."

"Okay. Let's do this." Aurelia finally nodded.

Zephyr was not a helpless child. He was a 1-star mage—a proper 1-star mage who could cast dangerous magic. They didn't have to be that concerned about his safety.

"Yes." Elenor nodded.

Simultaneously, they cast flight spells, rising into the air.

Zephyr, green with envy, looked at them and sighed. He, too, wished to fly. But he was lacking in the mana department.

Soon, the two ladies took off in two opposite directions.

Now, only Moss and Zephyr were left on the raised stone platform. They looked at each other without speaking a single word.

"Hey Moss, why are you Moss?" Zephyr asked, breaking the ice.

He ignored the squeals and cries of the rabbits down below, slowly walking to the edge of the stone platform.

Moss tilted his head, repeating, "Why am I Moss?"

Zephyr turned, smiled, and waved his hand to call Moss to the edge while speaking.

"Well, the name is odd, right? I want to know why you are called Moss. Do you know why?"

Moss walked forward slowly, shaking his head.

"I don't. But I know that my mother gave me the name."

"Oh! That's good. It is odd, but certainly not a bad name."

Zephyr motioned with his hand, asking Moss to come a little closer. They were now on the very edge of the platform.

"Sit here, and look down. See if any rabbits are climbing up," Zephyr said. "As you can see, I lack an arm. So, it would be difficult for me," he added.

Moss hesitated.

"Don't worry, nothing will happen. I will hold your leg."

Ten meters was a height at which a person could fall and break their leg. Zephyr could understand why he was apprehensive. But Zephyr asked nonetheless, to test whether Moss was willing to trust him.

Finally, Moss did what he was told. Lying on his belly, he leaned over, taking a peek at the ground. Fortunately, no rabbits were climbing up.

He breathed a sigh of relief.

"They are falling after climbing halfway," he said, assuring Zephyr.

"That's good. Climb back up," Zephyr said, removing his hand from Moss's back.

After confirming he would be safe, Zephyr relaxed a little. Then, an evil smile formed on his face.

"Magical test day it is." A thrilling thought came to his mind.

Looking down, he could see a continuous flow of berserk rabbits coming out of the ground. At a glance, the horde looked endless.

After coming out, they were moving in a group toward the stone pillars he was on. Some of the stragglers were running outwards, away into the flax fields and the houses nearby.

The villagers who sensed the commotion had come out of their houses to see what was going on. But before the stragglers could reach them, stone pillars rose from the ground, lifting them to safety.

Elenor and Aurelia had started their work.

"I can just do whatever the heck I want, huh!"

Zephyr looked at the ground again. Since he was left alone, he didn't have to stop and hold himself back.

"Let's see how many I can kill."

Zephyr sat, thinking of the best way to use his advantage.

"Lightning modifier is the best. A single attack has the possibility of eliminating more than one since it could arc between them."

"I should focus on clusters."

"Instead of a single enhancement, I should put up to 3 lightning enhancements on Mana Bolt. That way, I can maximize the damage."

While plotting out a plan, he noticed a rope on the roof of the house a few meters away. The man who was fixing the roof must have been using it.

"That's good," Zephyr mumbled. He swiftly used a telekinesis spell to pull it towards him. The rabbits noticed it and ran to the roof, but the object flew to Zephyr before they could reach it.

Still, a few rabbits stayed on the roof, looking at Zephyr with red eyes.

"Moss, you have a job," Zephyr spoke, showing the rope he retrieved.

"Tie the sword to it." Zephyr pointed at the handle of the sword he gave. "Drop it and kill the rabbit. If the carcass is stuck to the sword, pull it up. Can you do that?"

Moss nodded.

"Okay, let's do this."

Zephyr's immediate problem was his low mana quantity. To solve it, he would have to innovate a little.

With a sly smile, Zephyr stood on one edge of the platform while letting Moss stand on the other edge.

Then, he began to use telekinesis and enhanced mana bolts in tandem to kill and retrieve the bodies of the rabbits.

A few minutes passed by like that. By the time they were done, Zephyr and Moss collected over fifty rabbits in total.

"That must be enough." Zephyr smiled, satisfied.
