With his extended senses, he felt the mana around him gather quickly towards him.
Zephyr, in the middle, was acting like the core. His body became the storage cell. Mana rapidly filled his empty core. In under ten seconds, he was back to full.
"220 cores refilled per second after the formation takes its due."
Zephyr opened his eyes, startled. The rate at which mana was gathering was beyond what he expected.
"Ha ha ha ha…" He laughed like a madman.
Moss felt a chill crawl down his spine seeing him laugh maniacally. He stepped back, looking down at the glowing runes apprehensively.
Meanwhile, Zephyr chuckled, standing up carefully. With the mana gathering formation working, he could have an infinite amount of mana. The only problem with the method was that he couldn't move around much.
Stepping outside of the formation would certainly break it because he was considered a part of it. Knowing this, Zephyr stood up slowly.
'Most mages can only cast one spell at a time. And those who can cast more wouldn't need this formation. I am an oddity… a bit unique.'
'...And 220 cores per second might look great, but using this method is impractical in a real battle. Most mages would rather meditate to recover before raining hell on an enemy. Mobility was, after all, a must-have for a mage. Being anchored down is a death sentence.'
'Most importantly, this formation only works because someone like me, with absurd mana control, is at its helm.'
'When I consider all of that, I just made a formation that's almost useless to anyone but me.'
Zephyr paused to look at Moss. He was standing at the edge. Zephyr smiled.
"It works." He gave Moss a thumbs-up.
Moss smiled wryly. From his perspective, Zephyr looked like a madman. Just a few seconds ago, he was drawing something on the platform with blood. Then, he was laughing maniacally. He resembled an evil, bloodthirsty psycho.
Moss gulped nervously. He felt as though his life was at risk.
"We are shifting to full attack mode," Zephyr suddenly spoke.
Before Moss could understand what was happening, Zephyr lifted his hand. With an evil smile, he pointed his finger at a patch of ground covered by berserk rabbits.
"Lightning Bolt."
That was the last thing he heard.
A flash of light spewed from Zephyr's fingertip, momentarily blinding him. Then thunder cracked, almost deafening him. In an instant, the ground where the rabbits gathered exploded, scattering the charred carcasses of a few dozen rabbits into the air. Lightning snakes jumped from one carcass to another, spreading outward in a circle. In a fraction of a second, a few more nearby died.
Two seconds later, before the ringing in his ears could subside, Zephyr mumbled something. Again, a flash of light appeared from his fingertip. This time, he saw it move like a beam of light before colliding with another patch of ground.
A few dozen rabbits were instantly vaporised. Then they exploded, flesh and gore flying everywhere. The sound chilled his mind. Zephyr was stronger than he imagined. Moss noted in his mind to never offend the young man as he covered his ears.
"Boom!" "Boom." "Boom." …. "Boom."
About ten more attacks flashed within twenty seconds. Zephyr laughed like a crazy person; the carnage thrilled him. This was the first time he was having this much fun since he came to this world. The game was supposed to be like this. You were supposed to dominate the world by doing everything and anything possible.
"Boom." "Boom."
Two more thunderbolts—mana bolts enhanced with 30 lightning and a few explosion runes—were launched. The skillful use of spells allowed Zephyr to wipe out a few thousand rabbits spread around the area in a matter of seconds.
This brought a smile back to his face. Robotically, he turned to look at Moss.
"Offense is the best defence," he said with an eerie smile.
Then, bang.
The mana gathering formation collapsed. Soon after, Zephyr collapsed. Like everything in the world, you had to pay a price to use 'infinite mana'. Zephyr was no exception to this rule.
A sudden wave of mental and physical exhaustion tore through his head. His smile froze when a sharp pain drilled into his brain. Then, like a chopped tree, he fell onto the floor.
"The madman is down!" Moss exclaimed.
Accidentally, he spoke the words aloud. Zephyr squirmed on the platform for a few more seconds, mumbling something.
"I am… magical… turret… battery machine… super."
The words were jumbled together incomprehensibly. The backlash was not something he could control. Mumbling nonsense, he soon fell asleep.
—
A few seconds ago
The commotion of a few dozen thunderbolts exploding reverberated across the village. Everyone simultaneously turned to face the direction of the noise. The commotion was something they couldn't ignore.
Aurelia and Elenor, who were busy saving the villagers, flew up to see what was happening. Together, they looked at where Zephyr was and smacked their foreheads. Their troublesome junior was at it again. They could clearly sense what he was doing with their detection spells.
The young man had somehow created a mana gathering formation and was now raining down spells left and right. From the looks of it, he had no thought of stopping.
Does he even realise the problem? They wondered together.
Even though they were far from each other, both of them were connected by that singular thought.
After a moment, they shook their heads.
Zephyr was someone who had just overused mana a few minutes ago. He was someone who almost died because of his mistake. Could someone as reckless as him grasp the problem of overusing a mana-gathering formation?
They shook their heads harder.
It was impossible.
They had more confidence in Zephyr killing himself than in him realising his mistake.
Sigh.
Both of them sighed.
While Elenor was considering options, a mana message whispered in her ear. "Elenor, take care of the rest. I will go check on him."
It was Aurelia's voice. Elenor used the same spell, replying with a short 'yes'.
Aurelia focused mana around her feet. The flight spell activated with maximum speed, sending her slicing through the air. With her golden hair fluttering in the wind, she moved towards Zephyr.
'A ghoul failed. An undead knight failed. A necromancer failed. An assassin failed. All of them failed to kill him. And the irony is that the greatest threat to his life isn't an enemy, but the man himself,' Aurelia mumbled, not hiding her frustration.
'"Nothing would happen"—my foot,' she complained.
