Rune Matrix: Programming Magic After Transmigration

Chapter 49: Undead hunter

Risk and reward come hand in hand.

Killing the undead slaves of the necromancer would alert the necromancer to his position. However, it will also be advantageous in the long run. Even if Zephyr disregarded the long-term prospects, just the loot from the undead was good enough for him to take the risk.

For example, after killing Gale, Zephyr obtained the sword he used, the mask, and the armour. The armour was too heavy for him to use in its entirety, but he still wore the chainmail to enhance his defence.

Besides all that, there was also one more thing he could have looted from the body, but didn't because he respected the man.

That was Gale's mana core.

Usually, when any magical creature dies, the mana in its body rapidly crystallizes to form a mana core. In the case of knights like Gale, their mana heart will be the location where the crystal forms.

If Zephyr wanted, he could have dug out the mana core before he buried the corpse.

However, he didn't.

The man had already given him plenty of loot. Desecrating the already mutilated corpse was not something he wanted to do.

So, in the end, he left after burying Gale near his house.

However, Gale was a rare case. He had a consciousness fully capable of self-thought. He was more than any undead that existed. But that will not be the case for the undeads he was going to fight against now.

He didn't have to respect them or treat them differently. Killing them and looting everything he can from them is the obvious choice.

Even if it meant digging out their heart to see if a crystal formed in their heart.

Zephyr pondered the advantages and disadvantages of doing that while walking around the island. Once he weighed them carefully, he realised the benefits were far greater than the disadvantages.

By constantly killing the undead that the necromancer controls, he could drain his mana pool, thus weakening him.

'A mage without mana is like a stallion without any cum.'

'Or should I say a mage without any mana is like a cum without any sperm.'

'Or should I say a mage without any mana is like a sperm without any DNA.'

'Or should I say a mage without any mana is like a DNA without…what do you call it…base pairs?'

After going through a useless train of thought, Zephyr affirmed his decision to hunt the undeads. While the mana core contaminated with darkness mana would not help him do anything in the short term, just the fact that it could disrupt the necromancer's plan was enough reason for him.

'Then, how should I go about doing it?' He wondered.

He was standing deep within the flat island that connected to the island necromancer was on. It was covered in dense foliage, comprising of trees, vines, tall grass, and shrubs.

Moving through it was difficult.

'I need to use the geographical advantage. Create a spell that can instantly kill an undead without draining me. At the same time, use traps and tricks.'

'This would be fun.'

Zephyr chuckled.

In all of Arcana Link's world, he must be the only one crazy enough to think that.

Most mages would never try to fight a mage with a higher star rating. After all, the difference in mana of mages in star rating adjacent to each other was large. So, the chances of a mage with a higher star rating winning were always high.

Although there were a few exceptions where elemental affinity affects this, it is still generally believed that a mage with a higher star rating would win.

Therefore, crossing 4-star rating and battling an intermediate mage was unheard of.

Only a crazy person would do something like that.

And the one-armed mage that giggled while walking through the jungle looked exactly like a crazy person.

A few minutes later, Zephyr completed his preparation and sat down on a wooden log, gazing at the vast expanse of sea.

Far away, he could see humanoid creatures walking along the shore.

They were searching for him.

After launching the railgun at the fog formation, he left the island with the hill and moved to the flat island with the jungle. Thus, the undead creatures that the necromancer sent failed to find him.

"It's time to begin." He muttered as the sun peered through the storm clouds.

Lifting his hand, he pointed at one of the undead that was walking along the shoreline and fired the modified railgun.

All the undead he had seen were in groups of three, walking along the island searching for him. Taking out three was perfectly manageable.

The modified railgun spell structure shot out a mana bolt carrying two explosions, one fire, and five light-element enhancements. The spell cost about a little over 100 cores worth of mana.

Instantly, the mana bolt covered 100 meters and struck the back of the undead's head. It was walking away and didn't even notice the mana bolt striking it.

*Boom*

*Splatter*

Before it could even think, the brain of the undead exploded, splashing out boiling liquid and light. The two undead walking nearby were blinded by the light and hot flesh.

They tried to turn around and look at the attacker.

However, they were a beat slower. Two more mana bolts flew fast towards them.

With a similar bang, they struck the undead. This time, Zephyr missed the head because of the undeads's movement.

Still, it was not by much.

One of the undead felt its neck being severed from the inside before it died.

The other felt its chest burning into oblivion before it died.

Both were 1-star warriors who turned into undead by the necromancer. They held similar strength to Jack and could have decimated the entire village together. And yet, they died in a second under Zephyr's relentless attack.

Watching it from a safe distance, Zephyr stood up. Sniping the undead was a great success. Though it cost a little over 300 core worth of mana, it was still a lot less compared to the railgun he initially used.

"I should name the new spell, exploding light fire bolt…" Suddenly, he paused.

"Perhaps it was better if it remained unnamed." He muttered and jogged towards the corpse of the undead.

Meanwhile, his hand flashed towards three islands around him, sending three special mana bolts each.

The three were carrying search spells.
