Mind you, Zephyr was just a 1-star beginner mage. Compared to his mana capacity, the spell arsenal he could hold was massive.
When you extrapolate the rate at which his core's surface area is growing, he would surpass all existing mages in the number of spells he could store by the time he becomes a 3-star mage.
Just a beginner mage… having more spells engraved on his core than anyone else. Though the mana quantity would limit him, he could still store spells that an 8-star grandmage or a 9-star archmage would use within his mindscape. It was just beyond comprehension.
'Now that I think about it, I am kinda awesome, huh!' Zephyr stood there silently for a few seconds, digesting the revelation.
Because of everything that transpired, he hadn't really paid any attention to it. But now, getting a moment to breathe, he finally recognized how life-changing his decision to make a multicore was.
"Waste of space," Zephyr mumbled, passively scanning the search spell in his mindscape.
A 36-rune core structure was floating inside without a change.
"I think not," he said.
Considering his condition, it was not a waste of space.
"Then, let me do it." He took back the arrows he had handed to the ladies.
Aurelia and Elenor gave them back.
Zephyr clutched the arrows within his palm and activated the spell. Immediately, runes glowed above his hand, a wave of mana flashing into the arrows.
'Last time, I had to use blood as a medium to cast the spell. Now, I could do it with just a thought. I have grown.'
The mana traveled through the entire length of the arrow before shooting into the sky.
"Taanng." A high-pitched sound, similar to a bell ringing, reverberated outwards.
The search spell, otherwise known as the minor tracking spell, was a wind-type spell. The sound wave it released carried a pulse of mana that focused towards the target in some incomprehensible, magical way.
If Tom were within range, they would hear an echo in a few seconds.
Zephyr and the rest waited to see if the spell would work.
One second passed. Then two. Soon, thirty seconds passed by.
However, they didn't hear an echo. The spell didn't work.
"Well, that didn't work as expected. Do you know any other spells to track someone?" Zephyr turned around and asked the ladies.
Elenor shook her head.
"We know a detection spell that can find nearby creatures. But it can't do a targeted search," Aurelia commented, shaking her head.
Suddenly, Zephyr noticed Elenor pausing, as if she was thinking about something.
'Does she know?'
Before he could ask the question, Elenor took out a book from under her robe. It was a small spell book, similar to the one Aurelia gifted him.
'Does it contain a spell?'
Elenor took it out and flipped the pages, quickly focusing on one spell. Her eyes moved away from the page and looked at Zephyr.
"I think I might have one that might be useful," she said, looking at him awkwardly.
"Might?" Aurelia and Zephyr both said simultaneously, tilting their heads.
"Yes." Elenor smiled again; this time, the awkwardness was even more obvious. "But I don't think it would be pleasant for whoever is casting the spell." She looked down, reading the description attached to it.
"Can I take a look?"
"Yes, here you go."
Elenor handed over the spell to Zephyr.
He took it and read the description.
"Sensory Resonance. 256 runes!" He lifted his head, seeing the number of runes required to activate it. The spell was unexpectedly complex.
"Requires a medium (any living creature). The user should be capable of dominating the medium with mana."
"The spell activates, binding the medium's senses to the user. It continuously transmits the information until the mana connection is severed. The connection can be severed by blocking mana flow."
"Range can change depending on the mana used."
"Side effects: sensory overload, nausea, headache, vomiting. Warning: In severe cases, the user can experience mana hyperactivity. Use with care."
Reading through it, Zephyr's expression turned grim. The part about side effects was concerning.
Besides that, it was a complex spell with many embedded spells.
Zephyr's attention focused on the runic structure of the spell. It was circular like most spells, but along the circumference, there were embedded spell structures that served other functions. At a glance, it looked like circles embedded in a large circle.
Until now, Zephyr hadn't used a complex spell structure like that before.
'I would have to arrange the cores in quite a complicated way,' he silently thought. 'I hope it works.'
Then he shifted towards Elenor.
"I don't see anything about spells being able to control the medium to move the way the user wants. Also, the range is not described properly."
Elenor was trustworthy. The spell she gave must not be something harmful, and yet, Zephyr had his doubts. The list of side effects was reason enough to be concerned about.
"The spell was something I came across while exploring an ancient ruin. It was tested and verified to be working. But the data on it is limited," she said slowly. "So, I don't know anything about the range."
"Controlling the medium?"
"There is no way to do it. You just have to hope that the medium travels as you want."
"Ah!"
The spell is kind of useful, at the same time useless. It was a bundle of contradictions packaged as a spell.
'Anyway, I don't have any other choice. I can use the spell on a dog or something to track Tom by smell. If successful, I would get a general direction of his movement.'
'The side effects, I just have to bear with them since the ladies won't be taking the risk of engraving it on their cores.'
They were unwilling to even draw a simple search spell; why would they waste more than two hundred runes' worth of space for a wonky spell? Zephyr was sure he would have to take the initiative.
Still, he asked to verify.
"Who amongst us is going to engrave the spell on their core?"
