Chapter 40: Best Class Ever

"... and that's all for today, be sure to reread chapter one till everything is super glued to your head – that's what we'll do throughout this week – and there will be a short test on a day I shall not mention, those who fall below the pass mark will suffer the consequences. Goodbye!" Professor Yadok Eareli made a shooing motion with his hand as the bell for the next class rung, and all the students eagerly helped themselves out of the classroom.

"That's gotta be the worst class ever in our year." Jason lamented as they trudged to the next class.

"You can't say that yet, we still have about four more subjects that haven't had their go." Xenon replied, grinning bitterly.

"If I knew reading some stupid textbook is what the professors will make us do, I wouldn't have come here." Jason muttered

"Jason, that's what academies are for." Aoi rolled his eyes at him

"I'm gonna fail every subject at this point."

"No, you just have to stop being an idiot and read. Not me though, thanks to my ability just one minute of reading is enough to make me pass." Xenon smirked.

"That's cheating, your abilities should be banned." Jason said, looking mortified.

"I don't think that's a good idea either, Xenon. You need to read the proper way to understand what you're reading." Aoi said to Xenon.

"Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm just kidding, I'll probably drop RRT next year." Xenon sighed.

"Me too!" Jason said hurriedly.

"I'd like to continue it, but if you guys really drop it next year, I will too." Aoi muttered.

"Nah, don't let us be a bad influence on you Aoi, you should take RRT if you want. Jason is stupid enough for the both of us, don't be like him." Xenon spoke with the most serious look he could muster.

"Yeah, what he said... wait a minute, what did you say?" Jason turned to look at Xenon.

"Just the truth, that's all." Xenon replied. "What are you gonna do, beat me?"

"You won't need to know as long as you don't let me catch you."

"As if you could even if you tried." Xenon stuck his tongue out and ran circles around Aoi and Jason – with his ability activated of course.

"Let just get to class guys." Aoi sighed exaggeratedly, grabbed both Jason and Xenon by their wrist and pulled them into a run.

"Argh! Why do we have to do this with our break? We just barely survived that almost completely boring lecture." Jason complained, trying to convince Aoi and Xenon not to waste their break time in the library.

They had just stepped out of the History class where Derp decided to teach them a bit of geography since he supposedly wanted to keep the good stuff till they were done with his assignment.

He taught them about ... and how they contributed in forming the continents and islands. Of course, nobody really cared about that, but thanks to his ability to bend, contort and manipulate light to some degree, he was able to grab the attention of the class through his very vivid, almost lifelike holographic demonstration of the ... process.

"I'll go grab the books you guys forced me to take back to my room yesterday and meet you at the library." Xenon said and zoomed away.

"Buy something for us when you're coming back!" Jason screamed after him. "Do you think he heard me?" He asked Aoi.

"I don't know." Aoi replied, and then they walked to the library silently to join Xenon who was waiting for them while enjoying a light lunch.

For the next hour, they browsed through twenty books and were on they twenty first when the bell rang for the next class and Aoi shouted something simultaneously.

"What's it?" Xenon asked.

"Pack up and put the rest of the books in their places, I've found what we're looking for." Aoi said happily while waving a book he held in his hand

"Great, what page?" Xenon snatched the book from him, trying to locate the page Aoi was on.

"Two hundred and thirty seven!" Aoi and Xenon said at the same time.

"Great! You guys finish up here, I'll take this back to my room and meet you in class." Xenon put the book in his bag and was about to head to the exit of the library.

"Hey, why is it that you get to go while we have to go through the trouble of putting these books back in their spaces?" Jason blocked his way.

"Would you rather run to the tower and still make it back in time for the next class?" Xenon asked. "I thought so, now get out of my way." Xenon brushed Jason aside after he couldn't provide an answer.

"Well, you could just put back the books with your ability and still have time to go to the tower and meet us in class." Jason said before Xenon could leave.

"Oh and why don't you turn that desk into a large bar of chocolate since you're always hungry, or even better, turn that empty space in your skull into one big brain." Xenon replied.

"We'll meet you in class Xenon." Aoi said and Xenon left immediately. He walked over to Jason who was muttering something about his powers not being that strong and reminded him about the book they were supposed to return to their places before he could figure out what Xenon meant.

By the time they got to the next class, everyone –including Xenon and the professor– was waiting for them come for the class to start.

"Mr. Rogers, Mr. Mitsugo, I was starting to think I would need to send someone to come collect you as a quarter of the time allotted for this period has passed and I wanted all students present before I started my class today. Could I get an explanation?" A blonde woman sitting cross legged on the floor at the front of the class turned away from the rest of the class –who were also sitting on the floor– to the door as Aoi and Jason entered.

"We were lost on our way here and it took us a lot of time to retrace our steps and find the right place." Aoi explained.

"Take your seats." She nodded and gestured towards where the rest of the students were seated.

"Welcome everyone to my class, Study of Spirits and Spirituality. We will exclusively be studying spirits in this class, and as spirit form an integral part in our day to day life, there will be times where me and any other professor will take joint classes. My name is Aevin Mures by the way, I will learn your names gradually, throughout your time in this academy.

"Now, for our first class, we will start by engaging in the act that serves as our first and most basic connection to spirits, meditation. I believe you all know how to do this, maintain your posture, relax, and feel the energy around you.

"Just focus on your ousia and nothing else, I'll alert you when the class is almost at it's end." Aevin instructed and started to meditate, with most of the class following suit, although surprised.

"Is she seriously going to let us spend the whole class like this?" Jason whispered to Aoi with one eye open and looking towards him and the other closed

"Yes, I think she is." Aoi replied.

"I wish all classes were like this, this is the best class ever." Jason, his whisper getting louder said happily.

"I think it's a little too early to say that." Xenon, who was on Aoi's other side replied.

"Xenon, Aoi and Jason, would you kindly keep quiet and do participate in the class activity." Aevin called out.

Xenon glared at his accomplices and started to meditate, he was so focused on breaking through to the third stage that he was surprised to learn that it was almost the end of the class when professor Aevin woke them up, because this class was a double period.

"Now did any of you feel anything strange in today's meditation?" Professor Aevin asked before she ended the class.

"I... I felt as if someone was trying to whisper... something to me, but I couldn't make out the words." A guy from Erythros said.

"Anyone else?"

"I felt someone was breathing down my neck, but I'm not sure if it was the person behind me or not." Juan said uncertainly and was followed by snickers, snorts and giggles from the class.

"Anyone who felt like someone was whispering to them, raise your hands." Aevin instructed, and a third of the class, including Aoi raised their hands.

"Hands down. Those who felt someone breathing down their necks –and is sure it wasn't a classmate!– raise your hands."

Juan and some eleven others raised their hands, and put them back when the professor instructed.

"Good. Both you who heard a whisper or you who felt breathing are not hallucinating, what you felt was my contracted spirit trying to get familiar with you and that spirit is one of the things we will study exclusively this year. So what we did today will continue until all of you are able to see her." Aevin explained.

"Is she invisible?"

"No, but she is shy, and likes to get acquainted to people before she shows herself. Your seniors went through this, you will, and so will those who come after you. Class dismissed!"
