Chapter 44: Not Taking Any Chances

Red lines from where Karmesínrot struck the mannequin crisscrossed its body without any particular arrangement. The lines glowed and suddenly ignited, engulfing the mannequin in bright, red flames.

The mannequin turned around to face Karmesínrot who had her back to it. A split appeared on the faceless head of the mannequin, where the mouth on a human would be, the split widened, curving upward till it reached what would be the position of a cheekbone on a human.

The split opened and began to sucking in all the flames on the mannequin's body, the crowd gasped. The flames compressed in the mannequin's mouth and began to glow, the split opened wider.

Karmesínrot turned around after she heard Eyeball giggle and was greeted by the sight of the scorched mannequin's body being repaired and a crimson red beam emerged from the opened mouth of the mannequin.

She didn't have anytime to think and just emitted a lot of red flames from her body and compressing it as fast as she could into a small, round, 15cm thick shield.

The crimson beam shot out of the mannequin's mouth and headed straight for Karmesínrot. The beam hit the shield squarely and pierced it, overcoming the flimsy resistance put up by the shield easily.

Immediately the beam hit the shield, Karmesínrot knew it wouldn't hold, so she exploded it in the hopes of preventing another unwilling doughnut cosplay.

Fortunately for her, she acted quickly enough and the large mass of compressed flames that made up the shield exploded before the beam could pierce through it. The explosion caused the compressing force the made the beam of flame solid to become weakened, creating another explosion that sucked in the force of the first one to create a larger and stronger explosion.

The explosion managed to toss Karmesínrot about five feet away and inflict upon her some light burns – the damage she received would have been largely more fatal was she not highly resistant to her own flames.

Karmesínrot got up immediately, only to be see another concentrated beam, this one the radius of a pencil – unlike the first one that was as wide as a tennis ball – coming at her.

She dashed to her right, the red beam following her as the ran a spiral around the mannequin, getting closer with each revolution she made. Eventually the mannequin ran out of for fuel for the beam and it's makeshift mouth closed up.

Karmesínrot who was very close when the mannequin ran out of fuel dashed at it immediately, a red plasma sword forming rapidly in her right palm. She swung the sword at the mannequin who outstretched it's right arm.

The sword appeared to hit the mannequin's palm and continued slicing the arm into two halves, but what really happened was that the mannequin split it own flesh just before the sword could cut through its mark.

Karmesínrot felt the resistance against the sword was off and wanted to withdraw, but before she could, the mannequin's split arm closed up and sealed the sword within it.

Karmesínrot found her sword stuck and unwilling to set the mannequin ablaze, tugged at the sword but she failed to get it out of the mannequin's arm. The mannequin pulled it's right arm backwards, setting Karmesínrot who still held the sword off balance and delivering a kick with it's left leg to her jaw.

Blood filled Karmesínrot's mouth as she bit her tongue from the kick, tearing the skin off her tongue in four places. She staggered backwards a few steps before she regained her balance. She looked at the mannequin and her face stiffened.

The mannequin has opened its large mouth, the plasma sword lodged in it already blistering arm came undone and was sucked into its mouth and began to glow again.

Karmesínrot ran forward as quickly as she could, bent on beheading the mannequin before it could but a hole in her stomach.

When she was about five feet from the mannequin, a red beam the radius of a tennis ball once again shot out of its mouth, with her as it's target. Karmesínrot didn't even try to dodge but continued towards the mannequin.

When the beam was mere centimetres away from her face, she spat the blood in her mouth at it, edged her head to the left, away from the collision course with her left arm on which a shield was forming covering the left side of her face.

The blood touched the beam and sparked before evaporating. The beam came undone, suddenly exploding, from the tip Karmesínrot's blood touched to the end that was still in the mannequin's mouth.

Karmesínrot rushed forward despite the explosion in very close proximity to her. She arrived in front of the mannequin who had lost everything from its cheekbones to lower jaw, the rest of the head above the cheek bones was connected to what remained of the lower jaw with a few strips of the same brown material it was made of, and was starting to regenerate.

A long thin plasma blade formed on Karmesínrot's right palm and flashed as it passed through the mannequin's neck swiftly. Not willing to take any chances, she grabbed the cleanly severed head, tossed it to the floor, smashed her leg against it several times fiercely, pierced it with the long blade which shrunk into a very concentrated rod and then exploded, sending little pieces of the brown stuff all around.

Karmesínrot sighed in relief, but realizing she never heard the now headless body of the mannequin hit the ground, turned around. The headless body of the mannequin was truly still standing, and it was trying to regenerate its head from the neck up.

Karmesínrot looked at Eyeball who was giggling sharply, then breathe in and out slowly. She stretched her right arm to her side and a long sword was formed, she dashed at the mannequin that just began to regenerate its lower jaw and slashed at its body swiftly and fiercely before jumping back.

The crisscrossing pattern of her slashes appeared in red all around the mannequin and glowed fiercely before bursting into crimson flames more fierce than before.

Karmesínrot watched the mannequin burn slowly, it had no head or mouth anymore and so couldn't turn her flames against her. She looked to Herman who smiled and gave her a thumbs up before she walked to where the rest of the class was spectating and sat on the floor, propping herself on her arms which were stretched back.

"Karmesínrot, you are excused to go to the infirmary, just make sure you're back here before the class ends." Herman said to Karmesínrot who stood up eagerly and headed to the infirmary as she has sustained more serious burns when the beam that had been touched by her blood exploded right next to her.

Even she did not real understand why her blood was able to spark such a reaction, all she knew was her blood had the tendency to turn flames strong and wild, especially the ones created by herself.

"Now who will be going next?" Herman asked.

Arnetta raised her hand and walked towards Herman. "Could I be provided with two bats, preferably one metre each." She said while she tied her long purple hair into a tight bun.

"Sure, why not." Herman smiled, wondering what show she has prepared to show. He ordered some students to go check the storeroom at the back of the wooden building for what Arnetta requested.

Instead of the bats only, the students grabbed a variety of other weapons also, incase the rest of the ten would need them, though the weapons were all wooden.

'System, if I was fast enough, could I resist a time stop ability?' Xenon asked the system as out of all the abilities he had seen among his year, only Aoi's and Arnetta's did he feel were threatening to him.

As of now, you abilities present very little resistance to a time stop, but IF, you were fast enough...

Get faster first.

'Damn you, you worthless piece of... it was my fault for asking in the first place.' Xenon sighed.

Xenon ignored the system and gazed at Arnetta who had rolled up the sleeves of her purple shirt – the colours of the uniforms are in accordance with the house colours, except for the black suit, socks and waistcoat.

She held a bat in each arm and swung them in her hands until both were rotating very fast, she took a deep breath and dashed forward, pausing time.

She ran towards the newly constructed mannequin a few metres from her, still maintaining the fast rotation of the bats as she ran.

She got within and metre of the mannequin and stopped, sliding on the sand as she positioned herself to strike the mannequin with the bats, she aimed one at the mannequin's head and one at its side.

As she was about to hit the mannequin, Arnetta felt her body stiffen and a sudden cold creep onto her. Eyeball who was hovering beside Herman and staring at Arnetta's previous location before her time stop – like everybody else except Xenon who's eyes had moved (not followed) after Arnetta – suddenly moved and started right her, his pupils dilating.
